CA Regulations / Email F&G Commission to oppose MPA expansion petitions
« on: February 02, 2024, 09:12:06 AM »
Now is your chance to email the F&G Commission to oppose several of the MPA decadal review petitions. You have until February 9 to ensure that the Commissioners have a chance to read your letter prior to the February 14/15 meeting.

Petitions (any of those ending in MPA, e.g. 2023-23MPA):
https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=201924&inline

Email: fgc@fgc.ca.gov

Email format:
1. State your name, area of residence and whom representing.
2. State your major points first.
3. Briefly support major points with factual data, rationale, and/or logic.
4. Conclude with a brief summary of your major points.

Particularly bad petitions relevant to norcal/socal kayak, most important in bold IMO:

2023-23MPA: This petition will effectively ban fishing and spearfishing from the entire north side of the Monterey Peninsula by converting existing SMCAs to no-take SMRs. These SMCAs provide important nearshore opportunities for various consumptive stakeholders. The petitioner, as he attempted in a prior petition rejected by FGC (petition 2023-02), incorrectly claims eliminating finfish take will benefit kelp. This petition is not grounded in scientific reasoning or sound fisheries management and should be rejected.

2023-24MPA: This petition will effectively ban fishing, spearfishing, and all other take in the entirety of Laguna Beach. The petitioner cites ease of enforcement and anecdotal overharvesting and substrate degradation as rationale. This is unfair to consumptive stakeholders, essentially saying "it is too hard for city enforcement to learn the different regulations between different areas, so we want to impose a blanket ban on all consumptive stakeholders rather than addressing the root problem of educating the public." Lazy.

2023-26MPA: This petition aims to protect intertidal habitat and simplify enforcement but will effectively ban lobster diving from the productive reef at the southern end of Cardiff State Beach. This petition should be rejected and the petitioner advised to propose a smaller, intertidal-take-specific MPA in its place if that truly is the concern.

2023-29MPA: This petition will effectively ban all take off Carpinteria in Santa Barbara County. This is a popular and important nearshore access opportunity for low impact recreation like lobster diving, which is limited to shallow reefs like those found here.

2023-32MPA: This petition will severely limit shore angling opportunities and some kayak opportunity off the Marin coastline by expanding Duxbury Reef SMCA outward and northward and converting to SMR for easier enforcement.

2023-33MPA: This petition will severely limit consumptive stakeholder opportunities in several important kelp forests in Southern and Central California. It is inappropriate for a single petition to propose changes to seven unrelated areas; this petition should be split into seven distinct petitions to weigh stakeholder input for each specific area. The petition cites warm water events and pollution as threats to kelp forests, yet expanding MPA areas do nothing to mitigate these threats. Particularly:
  • Expanding Natural Bridges SMR (and intertidal-focused MPA) to 3nm offshore will eliminate large swaths of groundfish and salmon opportunity from anglers, completely unrelated to the inshore kelp.
  • Designating the Pleasure Point SMR as proposed will result in divers and anglers losing access to important inshore reefs and kelp in eastern Santa Cruz County.

For Sale / FS wooden cradle, sportube, freedive fins, compound bow
« on: December 16, 2022, 05:25:35 PM »
Wooden cradle - Free
Measures 68" long x 32" wide at the ends x 30" wide at the rails
It came with a scull boat I bought a few years ago. You could build a trailer with it. For a 14' boat or kayak, 10' from the winch to the wheel hub would be about right.

Sportube - $100
Series 2

Freedive fins - Free
Fiberglass leaderfins, medium stiffness. Size 42 footpockets. Won these in a raffle many years ago but I have never used them because the footpockets are not my size and they are probably stiffer than ideal.

Bear Wild Bow - $50
Right handed. 60#, 28.5" draw. Has stabilizer, quiver, Trophy Ridge 5-pin sight, Ripcord Code Red dropaway rest, a few goldtip arrows. Replaced the string in 2019, haven't shot it much since.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Registering a trailer?
« on: December 25, 2020, 02:32:57 PM »
I was looking at getting a new small boat/kayak trailer for my boat, but not I'm not sure how big of a PITA the registration process would be. Suppose I bought a Malone or Trailex trailer and assembled it--what extra steps would I need to take to register the trailer? Would I have to have it inspected by DMV?

Can anyone confirm that it falls under a "specially constructed or modified vehicle" and that this is the correct procedure? https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-registration/new-registration/register-a-specially-constructed-or-modified-vehicle/

General Fishing Tips / Middle Klamath Late October/Early November
« on: October 29, 2020, 10:23:58 PM »
How would you fish this stretch of the Klamath (say, between Iron Gate and the Scott River confluence) this time of year? The adult salmon quota has been reached so I would expect any crowds to have long thinned out. I looked at it a couple weeks back during the B6 closer and only saw a couple fly fishermen wading from access points.

I don't have experience drifting roe so I was hoping to rely on spinning gear. My thought was to pull off to the side of promising looking holes and riffles and cast Mepps spinners. Would that be a reasonable approach for getting on the half pounders and maybe some jack chinook? Or should I bite the bullet and find some roe and use drifting tackle?

Wanted To Buy / WTB Varget
« on: July 15, 2020, 08:01:24 PM »
Hodgdon Varget has been just impossible to find recently. Does anybody who reloads have a pound I could buy? Or any leads on a shop that has it in stock?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / What are these Lowrance FF parts?
« on: June 13, 2019, 10:20:34 PM »
I've never used a fish finder before, but just got a Lowrance Hook2-4x. What are these two white parts (in the same bag as the fuse/fuse keeper)? The bare-bones manual makes no mention of them.

Also, where can I buy a battery in a brick and mortar store (in SF/Daly City)? First thought was Home Depot, but it doesn't look like they carry them in store. West Marine maybe?

When I shot a bear yesterday, I thought the hardest part would be packing out all the meat and hide. Boy, was I wrong. The hardest part seems to be trying to find a DFW employee to validate the tag and pull the tooth. I called the Fairfield office trying to find a warden on the Peninsula without success. They didn't even give me contact info for any wardens.

Anyone have contact info for a local warden or other DFW employee on the SF Peninsula? Thanks!  :smt006

For Sale / Magnus Stinger Broadheads
« on: August 22, 2018, 10:18:21 PM »
I have five 100 grain Magnus Stinger broadheads I'm looking to part ways with. These are the four blades (two main blades and two small bleeder blades, essentially a two blade). I'm a big fan of these cut-on-contact broadheads (only getting rid of them because I bumped up to the 125 grain version for my new setup). At most two of them have been shot through an animal, the rest into foam. If you damage one you can send it in to Magnus and they will send you a new one.

$30 obo

General Talk / Vacuum sealer recommendation?
« on: September 08, 2017, 02:28:10 PM »
I've a had a Food Saver (the model number escapes me) for a few years, and it just isn't as effective as it used to be. It seems to leave pockets when sealing larger items. So, I'm looking for a new one.

One of the things I disliked about t my current one is that it wastes a lot of bag (I'd say at least a good 2") since the opening of the bag has to be inserted into the drip tray. Anyone have a recommendation for a vacuum sealer that will not waste as much bag?

12
I figure that this is probably a shot in the dark on such short notice, but I'm going on a charter boat trolling for salmon tomorrow. The problem? I'm totally under-geared for the occasion (over the past few years my fishing gear has been replaced by dive gear). If an NCKA brother has a suitable rod/reel or two for me borrow sometime tonight (preferable in the South Bay), I would really appreciate it and would gladly return the favor in the form of some white seabass from my freezer (or, hopefully, fresh salmon).

Got it covered. Thanks!

For Sale / RA Speargun and Neptonics floatline
« on: August 11, 2015, 09:56:47 PM »
Looking to sell my 80cm RA speargun and a 100' white Neptonics floatline.

I've had the RA a few years and haven't used it much (mostly alternate between my 70cm and 90cm). It's in great shape, and I just put fresh 14mm bands on it. Asking $200.

I've had the floatline a few years as well, but haven't used it except as a bowline in about two years, so it's just gathering dust. I abhor floatlines and almost exclusively use reels now. It's white, 100' long, and has a inner core rated at about 1600#, if I remember correctly. Asking $80.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Halibut Video
« on: August 04, 2015, 08:17:17 PM »
This year has a been a bountiful halibut year for me, and will hopefully only get better moving into August. I've been fortunate enough to see plenty of cool critters (and no scary ones) of which to take video. Combine the two, and voila! A flatfish-themed video has been made.   :smt006

There's no report to go with it, since it comprises over a year's worth of clips gathering dust on my hard drive, but there are some pretty recent fish on it.  :smt005
Watch in 720p.
