Fellas where is the best place to go bass fishing for largemouths in the Delta for a newbie ? Also besides the yak, paddle, life vest, and fishing equipment, what other accessories would I need or should I have ?

I'm an experienced bass fisherman but new to Kayaking/kayak fishing and the Delta. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Marcusg

Welcome aboard Marcusg!  I don't fish the Delta that often but hopefully this link to the Delta Chambers & Visitor's Bureau might help you to locate them.

Maybe we can hookup and fish our local water in Benicia, Vallejo, and Napa.

There're LMB in lake Chabot (Vallejo).  I caught my LMB there in February.  If you're after the hogs, then go to Clear Lake.

Yeah, I have been LMB fishing at Chabot but never caught anything even when sight fishing during the spawn. What kind of bait did you use when you caught that fish ?

i think that Sonny rarely fishes LMB in freshwater.  He's more of a saltwater guy.  There are plenty of places to bass fish the delta.  The closest to you in Vallejo is likely Big Break.  I don't fish the area so I don't know what baits are best there but it's really shallow and weedy so T rigged plastics would probably work.

I'm a hardcore Delta LMB angler. There is some great water in the delta, but in my kayaks, I like fishing NO WAKE ZONES. I HATE WAVERUNNERS, JETSKIS, WAKEBOATS with Ghetto music blaring, cabin cruisers, "Barney's" driving rental houseboats... You take your life in your hands in many delta locations. Too many IDIOTS, just add mass quantities of beer, and LOOK OUT! I avoid the Stockton side of the delta, Tiki- Lagoon/Lost Isle/Tower Park/Eight Mile Road marina's this time of year and thru the summer due to all the extra DANGEROUS boat traffic. I only go over there in my Basscat, and I rarely find it is worth wasting the fuel to get there.

I store my boats and one of my kayaks at Orwood's, BUT to launch at Orwood's, YOU MUST have a TRAILER to use the ramp. They don't allow cartop or kayaks from the ramp. Orwood's is heavy duty "wakeboat" area. Not user friendly for kayaks. My storage unit there includes free launches, so I keep it there, plus I get a 12'x30' storage garage with 24 hour gated access for $225 a month.

The places I would be launching this time of year for LMB in the delta is Discovery Bay, $10 and I stay inside Disco Bay and fish. Disco Bay is 100% no wake, and there are lots of docks, weed beds, tules... to fish. Lots of bass too. Launch is safe place for the most part, I've never been broken into, I never have seen broken glass on the parking lot (knock wood). Just don't go skipping jig heads off the boats moored around Disco Bay. The property owners frown on that. The other thing I do at Disco Bay... if the homeowner is out on there dock or in their back yard, I keep peddling right past their dock, no matter how good it looks or how many fish I have caught there. They deserve privacy too. Nice thing about Disco Bay, somewhere you can always find fish and NO WIND.

My other favorite place to fish right now is Russo' Marina on Bethel Island. $10 launch fee, 24/7 availability, safe, lots of LMB around. You can stay in side on Piper Slough and be in 5mph no wake zone for about 1 mile west and 2 miles east, great fishing right there and you can stay out of the wind too. 350 yard paddle and you are in Frank's Tract, aka BASS FACTORY.  Only drawback of Russo's, there are MANY weekend bass tourneys held there, so either get launched and out of there before 5am , or wait until after blast off. Hook Line and Sinker has a store right on the dock, good fishing intel, and they carry all the stuff you forgot at home. Great picnic/camp area too, flush toilets and showers. My PB LMB was caught in the weedbed directly across from launch 14lb 4oz on a 12" floating worm swimming like a snake. Some of my best fishing there has been 6 pm to midnite. You can also paddle/peddle over to Little Frank's Tract from Russo's, it is safe there, a SLEEPER,  very few boats can get in there, and the ones that do are FISHING, not seeing how much wake they can create.

Any info on places in the north delta?  I've read good things about the bass action around Terminous on 12 or the Meadows by Walnut Grove but would love to hear first hand accounts.

Thanks for all the info everyone... so many places to fish, so little time....
