Sweet!
I bet somebody catches a monster halibut this year.
-
Awesome. I can't wait, this is going to be my first Derby.
-
Right on.... I was bummed to miss last year's MBK derby. I was at the one before that and fortunately placed 2nd. I hope to move up this year. :smt002
-
Sweet!
I bet somebody catches a monster halibut this year.
I hope so. Last year the winning fish was a 3.0lb red and 2nd place was a 2.5lb brown!

-
Count me in for this one aswell geez I am going to have a very busy Aug & Sept.
-
w00t! I think my schedule is actually free for that date! Finally, I can enter a derby and not catch any fish in the company of my NCKA bros! :smt004
-
Yep, I should be able to make it! PERFECT, right between Reggae on the River, and Burning Man!!!! :smt005
Think they will let us sleep in the parking lot again? Last year was GREAT! The employees had a party the night before. We hung out and drank beer and ate their goodies living up the night before the tourney. :smt003
-
I will be there too.
-
I am surprised to see that MBK is the same day as Fisherman's Warehouse Davenport Rock Fish tourney :smt103
Maybe I will go to whatever tourney ChuckE is not going to...then I might have a chance :fish2
But I really loved MBK last year! We will have to see!

Theresa... good catch on the date conflict. Wow, that's gonna be a though call. If the conditions are nice off Davenport, it'll be tempting to go there, especially with the free registration and food. But if conditions are nasty on the coast, Monterey Bay might be the safer choice.
Is it possible for one of the derbies to reschedule for Saturday, August 15th?
I wouldn't worry about me, winning is all just luck. :smt003
-
Good call. I was bummed to have GSC III conflict with the FW ARW event. Now this :smt013 I wish there were no conflicts so we can support ALL our sponsors.

:smt044
Gee thanks Sonny! Hahaha!
Hey NCKA represented last year with the Top 4 spots--I was just glad to be a part of it.
-
thanks For the posting Aaron! I kept forgetting to put this up on the board, though we set the date a couple months ago.
Right on.... I was bummed to miss last year's MBK derby. I was at the one before that and fortunately placed 2nd. I hope to move up this year. :smt002
uuuhhhh....so that would be 1st I guess?
You have been there before!!
Best of luck to ALL, hope to see another record crowd!!
I'll get in touch with Eric and see if we can adjust. could be a coastal weekend extravaganza. I would like to do Davenport as well!!
Allen
-
Thanks for making it all possible Allen!
Looks like we've got some heavy hitters in for this one. Plus what is starting out to be a great halibut season. :smt045
-
I can't believe that after talking in January with Terra (at MBK) and discussing the dates of other event's (F.W. Davenport) she would schedule it for the same day :smt009
I guess I'll have to miss another great event due to bad scheduling :smt011
If anyone else is scheduling a event please check the events already posted.
Thanks,
Eric
-
Nathan and I will be there defending the family honor and going for a repeat. Time to start working on strategy.
Eugene
-
There, I fixed it...Do you luv me now? :smt003
-
Woo hoo! :smt060 :kick
-
WOW Aaron! That is very cool.
Ask and ye shall receive!
-
Moving the event to one day before Eric's event is still pretty much a slap in the face for Eric IMHO. He did coordinate with MBK in jan. How many of us have the ability to do 2 tourneys in one weekend? i would guess not many. One day before and a bigger purse? really? Hardly much help. MBK should simply change the weekend.
-
The main difference I see between the two is that you don't have to pay to enter Eric's event, to have a chance for a year-end prize.

........and Eric scheduled his event months ago, after talking to MBK to make sure there were no conflicts. Oh well, Ill be fishing Davenport that weekend.
-
well i know that eric can't do saturday events because of his work schedule. i also know that i will FIND a way to fly home that weekend from a business trip and spend TWO days on the peninsula fishing. maybe not everyone can do it but some of us weekend warriors are definitely grateful. monterey is a 3 hr drive for me so for me to drive there two weekends in a row is more difficult than going there one weekend and camping it on sat night!
-
Eric puts a lot of personal time and effort into his events, as well as driving 3+ hours to reach fishing grounds that are local to US, not him. Free entry, free food, and good times, I'll definitely try and make it to BOTH events!
-
I can win both days? Cool :smt004:smt003 :smt044
-
after thinking about for a while, i can see how 2 on one weekend could be benificial to some. 2 birds with one stone. i sould think a little before i post. I guess my last post was a little blunt. sorry.

Wow, glad to see post #2 sharky! I was mentally composing a response there, how do I comment without being too blunt myself. LOL. Spoken like a true gentleman, thanks.
Funny thing is, Eric and I are on the same team: Ocean Kayaks. OK is co-sponsoring both derbies, in effect. If any fault is to be assigned it is on me, I am the one who actually set the date with MBK for the 16th. I did not check Eric's schedule,, was just trying to fit things in between Elk and Moutcha Bay. (I think neither of which happening now ironically).
Many thnks to MBK
tara and Cass who showed wonderful flexibility, and esp to Aaron for posting and handling the details down there. TY Aaron, I never stopped loving you.**
I am stoked especially becaue I can now fish at Devenport with the cew again, something Ihaven't done for quite a while. Hope its a good year up there, definitely the right time to fish thete for RF and halibut!
Allen
-
Oh so it's all Allen's fault! :smt003 :smt003 :smt003. I'm looking fwd to both events (will begin the WAF account build-up now). I suppose weather will play a role in this double whammy!
Glad to see all the flexibility!
-
So cool to see everything working out. Unfortunately I have a previous engagement on Saturday. So hopefully I will be able to fish Davenport on Sunday. I am just trying to get out and fish as much as I can this season. So far I am doing more than last year.
-
Allan.
It was great to talk with you today and get the kinks ironed out. I know you also put a lot of time and effort into this event. I would also like to thank MBK for their understanding, They have always been great to me and my family. I will definitely be at the MBK event to show my support of these great people.
Thanks,
Eric

I slept terribly last night. Couldn't get that rude post of mine outta my head.I kinda apologized but would like to make it clear.
My first post was rude. I was sticking my nose in other peoples business. Best of all my guess that people wont be able to make both will be proved wrong by 50 to 100 of us.
I could edit it but i deserve the embarrassment. My apologies to MBK and all involved. I should just be grateful these events happen.
One day Ill learn to think before I post. Enough of me taking up space on this thread.....

Thanks for the support, we're all after the same goal (promote Kayak Fishing). Allan and MBK are a super group of people who have always been there for us.
We will all have to get together and have a cold on between these events.
BTW There is a KOA in Watsonville that would be about the middle of both events and could be great for a NCKA camp and party between events. They have Tent Camps, Mini Cabins, and places for RVs as well as plenty of room for family's. If anyone agrees with me I'll get the info and call about group discounts

Looks like all is well and Good on you... Hope we cross yaks soon..... :smt006

I am down for fishing both events...double header...what more could you want?
-
Maybe we should make side bets North vs South, where's the most, biggest fish?

Ditto. Gonna try hard to make both.
-
Cant wait! Me and the crew will be there.
-
Here are some more lodging options...
KOA Watsonville (as Eric suggested) is off San Andreas Rd. near Manresa SB
Manresa SB Campground (tent only)
Veterans Park in Monterey
New Brighton SB Campground
Sunset SB Campground
KOA (RV park) Moss Landing
Spooning with Mooch in the man van :smt044
Two derby in one weekend is going to be awesome!
BTW, MBK cut a check for around $1100 to the MB Salmon and Trout Project in 2008 and we'd like to top that this year.As you know, this fishery needs all the help it can get.

Spooning with Mooch in the man van

Theresa and I are both going to try to make both events. But, I think we will try to stay at Veterans Park in Monterey the night before MBK, then after the MBK event we'll try to find a campground north of Santa Cruz or nearby. Anybody have any suggestions?
Perhaps we can all shoot for the same campground after MBK for the typical NCKA "fat boy festival" aka pot luck. :fat :snorting: :cook

We need to check-in and sign the waiver when we arrive in the morning.

I would like to thank the guy who caught the winning cabbie, that DID NOT sign up last year. Thanks to his budget squeeze, my family is thoroughly enjoying our trident 13 we won (would have been his) :smt044 :smt003
DONT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU...and you know it will :smt003

Basically we have 5 hours out and back to MBK. Can someone more familiar with paddling there give me an idea of the effective range - how far we can go and still get in some concentrated fishing? How far down the peninsula or down towards Sand City? Any restricted areas other than around Hopkins Marine Station?
-
Eugene, that was my best friend Paul! I let him borrow my spare kayak for the tourney. And told him he'd catch a huge halibut if he didn't pay the fee. I was almost right--he caught a huge cabezon that would've won 1st place! He's going to pay the $ this year......

that depends on so many factors its hard to say. Scott (greatbass2) could probably paddle to Santa Cruz and back. What I would recommend is timing yourself on the way out and give yourself that time plus 10-50% more depending on the wind in the late morning.

...hopefully I don't get skunked this year...see you out there.

Sounds like great fun! last year it was pretty slow but things will probably be different this year and who knows, the winning fish could be a 3 pound rockcod or a 4 foot ling :smt003
-
OK, I'm definitely in.
Can anyone recommend a decent hotel close to the launch?
-
Theresa and I are definitely in. We are going to stay in a hotel too Saturday night. I scoped out a BUNCH of places, and the scary looking dives run $130, the "economy hotels" like Super 8 cost $170, the nicer places like Hilton run $230, and B&B's run anywhere from $250 on up.
The weird places are out of the question and we definitely want a place with a pool so Theresa and I decided that we'd spring for the extra $60 for the Hilton and call it our Anniversary trip. :smt003
-
Just got us registered for the MBK event! It will be super romantic anniversary, 2 fishing tournaments! The best part will be when I win the new yak :smt044 See you all there!
-
Tigerfish, absolutely. I plan on hitting both, so you can ride with me, just park at my place and carpool. I need to win that $$ back this time!
-
OK, I'm definitely in.
Can anyone recommend a decent hotel close to the launch?
Hey Dustin, MBK parking lot! :smt003 I heard they let you stay overnight there...probably that's where I am gonna end up staying and sleep in my car of course.

Kiel
Woah there! I said the let us stay last year, not sure if they are cool with it this year! Aaron??
Is this the same day as the car show that was happening last year? Those guys were parked all over the place, including MBK's parking lot, and no one hassled them at all...
-
Dave, I take that back, I am hitting this one only. Sunday is my birthday and the kids want to go out on a charter with me, but are welcome to hit it with me on Sat!
-
So, PK brtinghs up the perrenial leopard question.
I say thresheres are OK, because we eat them with gusto. If the group conscience is no leopards, then I agree with that....I am very fine with that in fact.
Sahll we say threshers only (though it's unlikely?)
Also I will post a map and fishing suggestions in a separate thread when we get closer to the date. You could probably look up the one I posted last year and the year before that for the info, but glad to make it easier for the newer members.
This is going to be FUN!!
Allen
-
What about blue sharks? is that an option, and are they within reach of our launch and time frame? I bow fished for them about ten years ago, and getting one on the rod in a yak would be somethin.
-
Can we get a final decision on leopards? That was gonna be my target fish, so I'm all in favor of including them!
Why are so many opposed to including them? Just a question....I'm attending either way.
-
I am in favor of targeting them too, they seem to be the only thing I can catch! :smt044 :smt013 :smt005 :smt011 :smt012
-
Well, it's a fishing tournament and we're targeting "gamefish."
Is a leopard shark really a gamefish?
A gamefish is technically a fish that is prized for it's fighting ability or difficulty to catch.
In other words, can you effectively target leopard sharks w/a lure?
-
I would like to know about this one also, I had a game plan, but if leopards are included I might change my stratagy.
-
They are listed in DFG as a game fish, so I don't think we should pick fly shit out of pepper, it will still be a level playing field.
-
Ive yet to see A leopard pulled out of that area, so I say all you guys target them well I go after what I know is there!!! :smt044
-
while i agree with no leppies, i also have never heard of a leppie caught in the mbk area. i would think they would be more up towards moss and elkhorn slough.
i think the winner will be catching a very large wsb!
-
Leopard was part of legal catches for the last 2 MBK's derbies and yet nobody caught it to win the derby!
-
Ive yet to see A leopard pulled out of that area, so I say all you guys target them well I go after what I know is there!!! :smt044
If that's the case you guys shoulda all been in favor of leopards and not said anything! Thanks for the heads up, though! :smt006

Also the rule of thumb for dervbies since we've been having them has been "edible gamefish." Leopards being edible is a perennial argument.
And I've never seen a leopard near MBK either. For that matter, I've seen a thresher at MBK but I think it more likely, and especially this year.
Keep the comments coming I'll make a decision at least one week before the derby, OK?

Two things... Yes, it is Concours weekend, second, is it my turn to take home the Trident??? Looking forward to seeing everyone.

I have not made a MBK event yet,
I get the drift that this is going to be at the Elk Horn Slough location, correct?

Also Blake can probably give us more info but I hear the stripers have been gangbusters along the beach there towards and past the hotel.
Allen
-
Allen, thanks for the support!!! But, for me, you..., "THE MAN". Anyway, the stripers are either "on" or "off". That's a wait and see thing... I'll say this, I've got a different plan... Look forward to seeing ya Bro...

That's what I'm asking for, not too familiar with SoCal.... :smt002
From what I remember about that spot, very trendy, busy tourist hangout... Yukky,
I guess there is parking and place to rig up without your car being towed...?
You better show up Don!
Might try to turn this into another mini vaca with the Fam,

If anybody is willing to donate some fish to the annual CRSA BBQ Fundraiser (Carmel River Steelhead Assoc), please see me after the event. I will be taking fish donations. And it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
-
S.C.,
You are welcome to any fish I can manage to bring in although I don't expect it to be much :smt044
Great cause and I'm sure you will get a few donations.

Sin Coast..., count me in, "donation" wise, but don't forget about the "in possession" reg., or does it not apply when doing a benefit? I try to learn something new everyday! See you there...
B.

but don't forget about the "in possession" reg., or does it not apply when doing a benefit? I try to learn something new everyday!
Valid question. I can't have more than 10 RF + 2 lings in my possession. But my wife, son, and friend will be there after the tourney and you can gift the fish to them....and I'll make sure they get to the CRSA walk-in freezer. Sorry for the minor thread-jack, but they're a great org and their Annual Wild Game BBQ Fundraiser is legendary (tons of game from quail to venison to boar and plenty of "regular" grub like homemade sausage, burgers, steaks, etc too). I'll post the info for their Fundraiser when that info becomes available--but it's usually in late Sept/early October in Carmel Valley.
-
Hey Sin Coast... You know me, just looking out for ya... How cool to fish w/family!!! My 18 yr. old made the 1st & 2nd years, but NOW he claims, "I've got too much going on, Dad". Yah, probably a blond... Looking forward to seeing you and my fish are your fish!

Hey Pat I will donate to the fundraiser! Looking foreward to hanging with all my buds! This one should be A hoot....
-
can we do a bon fire / bbq on the beach later in the evening????
-
Mooch:
I dson't know what the rules are for bonfires on that beach..... But I never see remains, at least in front of MBK.
I will be heading for Santa Cruz to prep for Davenport on sunday, get some Z's and an early start.
Allen
-

Pretty sure all fires must be contained to fire rings.
-
So,
Where will everybody be on Saturday night?
I have had trouble trying to find a place - any suggestion's welcome.
I will have my vehicle and small trailer and poss. have a friend with R.V. if needed.
Please help a brother out with ideas
-
OK guys........and gals...........
this may be my last post prior to the Derby. If anyone has last-minute questions, please PM me, so the Q's don't get lost in this long thread.
*Good news and bad news. Bad is the Concours is scheduled for this weekend, half the MBK parking lot (owned by the City) is already cordoned off, just like last year. Good news is the cops are lax on Concours weekend, so vehicle sleeping in that parking lot is likely to go unchallenged. (DISCLAIMER: Neither I nor MBK takes any responsibility if you go to sleep in that lot and get hassled or have to move. You are on your own. I slept there last year with no problem, but will stay at home this year in order to make room for someone else, I don't have that long a drive) If the lot is full, you can show up in the early am, dump your gear, and park off-site, lots of free parking on nearby streets, and it's a safe area.
*Sign-ups are OK on the morning of the Derby. Everyone has to sign a waiver on the morning of the derby.
**30 people pre-registered at this time....If you want a clean start on Staurdauy with no delays, my suggestion is pre-register now, call MBK 800-649-5357
***Fishing has been decent in the area this year, better than last year. Everything is happening early this year in Monterey Bay, so don't be surprised if we find a lot of lings.
****For those unfamiliar with the area, best bet is to target kelp beds. Paddle straight out and turn right to parallel the long kelp bed that heads NE. Fishing outside that kelp to 80-90 feet you can also find pockets of RF. OR, paddle over towards Cannery Row, fish the kelp and outside the kelp there for similar results...be careful there is a reserve right at MB Aquarium, it is marked with little white buoys. Get the gps #'s from DFG website. If you are not sure, then don't fish there. Also if this is a new area for you, try to network with another angler who may be familiar with the area, tag along with them to find the right spot. Last year fishing was slow (Unless you were Patrick Kuhl) Derby was taken with a 3-pound red rockfish. Year before it was a halibut caught just outside the moorings right in front of MBK. There is a lot af bait in the area, I would fish with Live Bait if at all possible. Fish also like shrimp flies, mega baits, and swim bait in that area. Whole squids on a trap rig always work for me at MBK. Hairraisers trolled works like a charm for the schoolie rockfish, and I had a great run of Calico Bass 2 yrs ago with the hairraiser, over by the coast guard jetty.
Good luck to everyone I will see you Saturday morning bright and early (or at least early). Many thanks to Aaron, Tara, Cass, holaki and everyone else at MBK for sponsoring this Derby again, not to mention OCEAN KAYAKS, who once again provided a NEW -13 as 1st prize!
A few pics from last year
-
I scoped out the area yesterday to find thousands and thousands of jellies close to shore and the pier, I saw no bait or diving birds along at least three miles of the beach! Good luck everyone, and may the best ( Or Luckiest) win!!!!!
-
man, where I am going to put another yak :smt044 OK dont answer that :smt003
I recommend a long troll pulling a big marlin plug at about 5 knots. Troll straight towards Santa Cruz. Turn around when 75% of the total time has elapsed. :smt003
-
I just signed up today.
See ya all there.

hey..
no one responded to the earlier question posted by yakhopper re: camping.
anyone attending the 2 events planning on doing a group campsite?
I am having wife and kids meet me down there after weigh in / lunch so hoping to find camp site later that afternoon. I don't think wife will be up for parking lot camping.
tried Butano and Henry Cowell up near Santa Cruz but they are full.
any suggestions?
thanks,
dave
-
Look up Veterans campground in Monterey - it's only about 10 minutes away from MBK....it's on a first come first serve basis (no reservations)
-
thanks mooch...
sorry I wont be spooning w/ u..
anyone else planning on going to Veterans?
-
Here is a list of campgrounds that are (sorta) between Monterey and Davenport:
Sunset SB campground
Manresa SB campground
Seacliff SB campground
New Brighton SB campground
Henry Cowell Redwoods SP campground
Big Basin Redwoods SP campground
Portola Redwoods SP campground
I just checked reserveamerica.com and Sunset has 1 site available for Friday night. M/b able to reserve that site, then nab a first-come first-serve site for Sat night?
Also just noticed the group site at Fremont Peak state park (above Salinas) is available @ 75/night. But that's like an hour away due to narrow winding roads.
-
Almost forgot about Mt Madonna county park above Watsonville. They have sites available too. It's sorta in between MBK and Davenport...sorta.
https://gooutsideandplay.org/
There's a KOA in Watsonville too.
-
Bad is the Concours is scheduled for this weekend, half the MBK parking lot (owned by the City) is already cordoned off, just like last year. Good news is the cops are lax ....
what is concours????
is that why it is so hard to find campsites in the area?

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Monterey Auto Week
August 12-16, 2009
A tradition going back over half a century, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, held this year on August 16, 2009, is where the world's collector cars meet and compete. Only the 175 best collector cars in the world roll on to the legendary eighteenth fairway at Pebble Beach, and only a handful of those will receive official recognition for the style, technical merit and historical accuracy of their vehicles.
But the Concours is only the final event in a packed week celebrating the classic automobile! All over Monterey County, classic cars take to streets, golf courses, parks and the world-renowned Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, surrounding visitors with automobiles from yesteryear.
Need to experience Monterey Auto Week on a budget? Make sure to refer to our Concours on a Shoestring page.
Auto Shows
Auto shows and rallies throughout Monterey County offer car fans the chance to see historic and rare vehicles up close, with peeks both inside the car and under the hood.
Concours on the Avenue
On Tuesday, August 11, Carmel-by-the-Sea's Ocean Avenue and adjacent streets become a pedestrian gallery lined with museum-quality automobiles. This free, juried event with over 175 cars on display takes over 16 blocks of Carmel.
-
Oh Ya! Monterey is going to be pack this weekend :blob10:

Also - Need to think about alt. site to launch if fires prevent access to Davenport (check Davenport roll call).
Sorry for the thread jack,

So what's up with all those jellyfish?
http://www.contracostatimes.com/search/ci_13046436?IADID=Search-www.contracostatimes.com-www.contracostatimes.com
Is this going to hurt the fishing? hurt me if I touch 'em? Will the smoke drive them away?
-
Yeah, its jellyfish city right now! Never seen so many in my life. They're attracted to high nitrate levels, I hear. It might screw up the fishing.

Probrably already mentioned - camping option.

I wouldn't go anywhere NEAR Laguna Seca this wknd. Big event in town, including the Historics Race on Sunday. http://www.pebblebeachconcours.net/
-
Just got back states side, hoping to get to sac and get everything packed up. Might be heading out tonight in the middle of the night, bringin GF and Rudy. Not sure where we are going to stay, I might splurge and get a hotel or something. Looking to hit the water in the morning and get an idea of the layout there, never fished it. Anyone else going to be prefishing tomorrow?
-
Good luck with hotels around monterey. This weekend is the concour d'elegence at pebble beach. Most of those stay at the pricey hotels, but you can be sure rooms will be at a premium.
See ya all there.

We were trying to book rooms for our CEO interviews and between the fair, the concours, and the incoming firefighting troops, there isn't squat available..
Good Luck!!!!
-
Sleep in the pick up again, is there a Walmart around? Haha. My crew made me sleep in, They are on their way to get me, so no early morning scouting today, see you all down there.
-
Walmart is in Marina, right off the Reservation Rd exit. You can car-camp in the prkng lot for free....just in case.

Thanks!
I've worked this out w/the DFG. We have clearance to accept donations on behalf of the CRSA Fundraiser BBQ. Please find me after the event if you are willing to donate some fish to this very-worthy cause. Just remember to observe all applicable regulations, because they obviously still apply.
Thanks!!!!
-
S.C.,
Great cause - if you would like us to - I'm sure some of us would donate on Sunday as well if needed.
See you in Monterey,
Eric
-
Sin Coast... yup, I'm still in for your cause... But, if I were thinking, we'd have gone out of town and rented out the house for the weekend!!! Big deposit and easy money!!! Look forward to seeing everyone.
