Title: Li-on and Li-po batteries re-visited
Post by: surfingmarmot on April 21, 2011, 08:43:37 AM
Found a very interesting article about the causes of Li-on and Li-po flare ups. Li-pos are just as vulnerable—there are some videos of what happens when you over charge the Li-po packs Rc modelers use. They are very dangerous—like small incendiary bombs.

The majority are caused by improper charging but a significant number are caused by damaged cells (usually from RC model crashes).  I've bee using a Li-on pack for several years with no problems—I am very careful about charging and gentle with them but I am strongly considering going back to Gel cells. I am starting to think it's just not worth the risk: to me, my house, my vehicle, my kayak. Gel cells are a bit heavier, but they are very safe and these days for me, safety issues are foremost.

It doesn't look like he is registered on the site, so I don't think he will get the message. His post was from 2011. I imagine there have been some improvements in the battery tech since then. Check out the Wilderness Systems lithium battery.
