hi all,
just signed up for the 9th slot..
I am a newbie to yaks.. I will be bringing my malibu II unless you think I should demo a t140 or something else...but my thoughts are that  I can't afford/ fit in another boat so I might as well learn the characteristics of my own boat...any thoughts???

what the hell is bracing anyway...?

Welcome and thanks for signing up! You can bring your own boat if you want or demo one of ours, it's up to you.I would certainly recommend practicing self recovery in your own boat to get comfortable in you own boat.

Essentially, bracing is slapping a paddle blade flat against the water, using the water's resistance to produce momentary support, snapping the kayak back into position with your lower body, and correcting/preventing your capsize mid-tilt.Bracing also involves using the points of contact with your seat back, foot pegs/wells and/or thigh braces to stabilize and lean your boat in the surf to ride a wave and prevent capsize.

Bracing is an essential skill and we will spend some time discussing, demonstrating and practicing bracing in this class.

If you are using your Hobie I would remove and plug the mirage drive for the class. If you want you can use your boat for the rescue practice and use an MBK boat for the surf lesson.

Mirage drives don't do well in the surf.

This class is full!!! Thanks to all who signed up.

Met with Holokai Tues. and put together the final details. This is going to be very cool.We added Scott, ACA certified instructor, guide, pro surfer from Australia to help coach the entire session and lead the on-land surf zone lesson.

For those signed up...Things to bring:sack lunch (this will be a working lunch between recoveries and surf zone, so pack accordingly),sun block, floppy hat, helmet (buy your own,but if you don't have your own we have some to loan), paddle (we have at MBK too), your boat (I've got a T15,2 Tarpon 140,and a bunch of P13 reserved for those who requested boats), thigh braces (I'm bringing my own, we sell them, and MBK has some to loan),wetsuit (I'm going Mysterioso layered under my 4/3 Bodyglove surf suit,MBK provides farmer johns and paddle jackets too) , PFD (MBK has too), booties, plenty of warm layers, towel.

The Sat. forecast so far...
W WINDS 5 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT. NW SWELL
2 TO 4 FT. PATCHY FOG.

There will definitely be some wind waves and hopefully the NW will kick in a bit.  :smt004

Do you mind if wandering eyes come by and check out things? I would like to learn more also and wouldn't mind paying some for the info.

Aaron,

Nathan and I will need to borrow some thigh braces and helmets.  He has a surf suit, I am in my farmer John or a 7 mil dive suit.  So my question is how much time will we be spending in the water before lunch?

Eugene,
I've got your helmets and thigh braces covered.

We will be spending less than 1/2 an hour in the water practicing rescues right before lunch.

Of course some of that depends on you and if you dump during paddle stroke or bracing practice. :smt002

Sorry, As with my other classes and tours, tagging along without registering is not acceptable. The class is limited to twelve for a reason...more personalized instruction for paying customers and safety in the surf zone. Also, all participants sign a waiver to participate.

Please sign up when we offer future classes.Thanks.

Hummm... any clues where I can find a helmet in the SJ area on short notice?  Didn't know we were going to need to buy them...
