Has anyone tried to rake a yak on the ferry? I was thinking of loading my yak on the ferry staying on the island a few days and chasing yellowtail.

You can rent yaks on the island. There’s also some sweet TRs of crossings in AIs if you use the search function.

FYI, I tried to rent a kayak to fish there last July and they would not let me rent a kayak for fishing due to "liability" reasons.

Weird. Something must have changed. I literally walked up with goggles, mask and pole spear in hand and told them I might go all the way to two harbors. They just said “have fun!”  Was about 5 or 6 years ago.

Yellows were pretty slow last week. I spent 3 days fishing off the boat all around the island with live mini macs and sardines. Nothing but lots of large sand bass on the far side of the island.

they don't allow you to take kayaks on the ferries anymore, used to be able to on the other ferry company but they shut down.  your best bet would be to freight them over or find a sucker to mothership it there.

Some friends of ours own a really nice villa overlooking Hamilton cove. we had dinner with them last night and they offered to let us stay there one weekend in oct/nov. looking to do a spearfishing trip one of the days from a local charter, but I've never been to the island. Any recommendations on nice places to eat or things to do?

Been a few years since I've been but its such a small island, you can circle the whole place in few hours.   :smt044

The places to eat and things to do are very limited on the Island but can't go wrong with one of the Mexican seafood spots.

I know a guy from my pierfishing board that lives in So-Cal adn goes to Catalina Island over a half-dozen times a year.
He rented one of the kayaks over there once. After that, he bought a high-quality inflatable kayak and takes it over on the ferry when he goes. It fits in a case that meets the requirement as far as luggage limits.  :smt001
