But c'mon... what a tease!  I am so jealous.

Bring on the reports already!  I'm glued to my lappie.  Don't make me call 911.   :smt009

Can't wait for the full report.
It looks like the swell was low enough that you didn't have to walk all the way to the other end of the beach to launch.
I hope is was as good coming back.
I sure missed not being there, but I sure am not missing the drive home or the clean up.
It is still all worth it.

I'll let others chime in about the fishing since I don't want to steal the thunder.

I will, however, report that the real winner of the weekend was the Coastside Fishing Club.

Two years ago our raffle raised $800 and we were very proud of that.

Last year the raffle raised $1600 and we were blown away.

This year our prize list was larger than any we'd had before and I felt confident that we could up the ante and break the $2K mark... boy was I wrong!

As it turned out, NCKA emptied their pocketbooks and must have done everything short of selling their children to the gypsies to raise an unbelieveable $3,015 for the Coastside fishing club!

Way to go!!!

Oh, and Randy is the man who walked away with the new custom rod.  Congratulations Randy!

Thanks again to all who donated to the raffle, including many personal donations from tourney participants.  This wouldn't have been possible without all of you!

Erik

Another great event...thanks to all who came, fished, cooked, ate, cleaned up etc.  We had a great time!!!

The weigh-in had lots of excitement.  Fuzzy Tom had the early contender, but his 13# fish was bumped to second about midway through by Danglin's 15# fish.  Danglin's fish hung in until the bitter end when JTF showed LATE in the game with a 16# unit that bumped him to 2nd. SOOoooo

JTF takes 1st and walks away with a new Marauder from Cobra Kayaks and GWKC
Danglin takes 2nd and won a new all carbon Accent paddle from GWKC
Fuzzy wins 3rd and brings home a Okuma yak rod from the guys @ Outdoor Pro Shop

The raffle and potluck were NUTS!

that was a great event, raising that kind of money for coastside is incredible, we should be proud to be part of such a special grass roots organization! the raffle was incredible, now randy can say he owns a $3000 fishing rod, because that what we all wanted, it was sweet!
lots of good people there, i would like to give an honorable mention to;
mudshark and his bud [sorry, forgot your name, too much tequila] for the sickest kayak trailing yet, complete with a fish cleaning station with lights and a beer cooler!
and chuck's deep frying prowess; my wife said "how come it does not taste like this when you cook it?"-ouch

oh yeah, the fishing report. lots of wind and fog  the water was rough on the outside of the bay, nice in close.  lots of blues and blacks, a good amount of lings, some reds. even some cabs.

Anita and I had a blast! Great folks, beer ,tequilla, and lots and lots of food.
I got on the water at 6, caught a 23ish ling right off the bat, released and caught an assortment of legal and protected, all released, JTF gave me a nice keeper ling and showed me a fishy reef he knows-I forgot my battery and transducer, fishing blind!!!- nothing for a while then at 12:45 I hook up with a big swimbait, landing a pissed off big ling, and while he's thrashing and snapping between my knees, he throws the swim bait in the water. Frank is right next to me and wants to know what color swim bait and when I pull it in, there's a BIGGER ling on it.
So frank gets JTFs ling and before I even land this one, its 1:00. Half an hour to paddle in and get my ass up that hill. Left the yak on the beach, Anita was there, she carried the poles and I ran the fish up with minutes to spare.
And at just under eight pounds, I was like 10th? Should have taken my time up that bear of a hill...Congrats JTF, much thanks to Sean and his family,Bill and his and all the folks we met, happy fishing!

Amazing event as always! I was happy Chuck let me be the 2nd fry man. I got all the veggies, egg rolls and lumpia. He would not let me touch the fish!  :smt003

The food was totally over the to this year. Tin's wife brought homemade spring rolls that where the bomb but the best where her pot stickers! Holly smokes! I only got one but it was the best pot sticker I have ever eaten. Friday night fish fry then Saturday night fry party and amazing tri tip, enchiladas and coconut curry chicken.

Oh yeah and we went fishing  :smt005 I landed about 4 underlings to start the day, the largest was 23". I was way up north right outside Coffy Cove drifting with Chuck. Chuck was doing pretty well on his double rig. I landed a few small rockfish to go with all my underlings. I started heading back to the beach and decide to take a few more drifts just north of the launch. I hooked up with something big but it let go before I got it to color. Sensing a large fish, FishHunter comes over to snake my spot and immediatly hooks up with a nice 28" ling. You're nice to a guy, make him swim baits, call him to review tide books and this is the thanks I get!!!   :smt044

It turned out to be a good thing as I setup one last drift and just as I am about to wind up for the day I get a FISH ON!! I can tell it is pretty heavy to. I get it close to the boat and plant my Kunz gaff into and drag it on board. Turned out to be the 5th place fish I think and my personal best ling.

That bulge in his belly is a 13" half digested greenling, probably good for at least an extra pound.  :smt005

Thanks again to the entire town of Elk for letting us invade their little corner of paradise and the White family for making it all happen! Can't wait until next year!

That ling looked LATE in the third trimester, it was the fattest ever.  The melting greenling was fantastically disgusting.

Thank you once again Sean, Leah and Family for an unforgettable weekend.  My third elk appearance and I win the crown jewel of Kayak Fishing Derbys!   Or, just to be a derby winner is an honor in itself, included with names like ChuckE, Eric Kunz, Brian Steves, and many other great fisherpeoples that make this NCKA forum their home.

Thank you to the town of Elk, Bill, to Eric Kunz for all his work on the raffle and what it does, Cobra kayaks, Chris Petersen for the tequila, thanks to whomever brought the wine, thanks to all the people who shared their awesome food dishes.

So, as for my winning ling, I caught it on a fluorescent green and yellow 7" fishtrap that had a orange tail.  It was 35 1/2 inches and weighed 16.2 lbs.  I caught the ling around 8:30 in the morning in or near the same place Eric had caught his ling last year.  Before I hooked up, Ben(guitarzan) mentioned to me that the fat lady hadn't even begun to sing yet and I was like, "yeah, yeah, I just want to have fun this year and not stress on winning" then, next thing I know, I have a nice size ling. I had no idea it would be the contender it was.  A little later on I heard Danglin on the radio saying he had a 35 incher.  Cause enough for me to keep on fishin till the very end.  I was pretty sure Kunz or Freddie, Chuck, or some other slayer would have a fish the same size so I fished till the very last minute I could.

Never underestimate your competition, especially not our norcal yak anglers, that was why I came  up late to the weigh in, when there are some of these guys you know that slam big fish, you owe them every last bit of effort you have.  To me this is the competition to win.  I'll be smiling for a long time after this one.  Thanks again to everyone who came and I really enjoyed hangin out with all of you.  Congrats to Danglin and Fuzzy Tom on your 2nd and 3rd place finishes.  JTF..

Not much to add, other than another huge round of thanks for the White family for putting on a fantastic tourny. Maggie, James and I had a rough start on getting to Elk due to logistical problems, but by the time we left on Sunday she was already looking forward to next year.

Yet another reason to wear river boots :)

I think it liked the low freeboard of the Scupper Classic. It was all over my boat, even snagging my gaff by the tennis ball at one time. I hooked a small blue on a grub, the otter grabbed it, and that was the last I saw of it, after being pestered on and off for about an hour. I'm glad I stuck in the otter zone though, as that is where I landed my 5.5 lb Black, and my 9 lb Ling.

Launching at the north end of the cove. That's cpyak's good side, and I believe PAL's Trident.

What a great time! The company was awesome, the food was awesome and the entertainment was as good as it gets.

Guitarzan and Danglin rocked the house!  I'll post pics later.

Congrats to all of the winners and participants.  A great big GRACIAS!!! to all of the people who helped put on such a great event and also to all of the sponsors who donated such a great list of raffle prizes that helped to raise quite a bit of money for a worthy cause.

Can't wait till next year.

A huge THANK YOU to Great White Kayak Company and NCKA for making this event happen, and to the town of Elk for putting up with 63 :smt119 kayak anglers in their backyard. Hey, and I can't forget RockHopper, who gave up a coveted spot and making my attendance to this known event possible, and Pacifico, who hooked me up with his extra rolleez sand cart. Thanks guys!
I kept a scorecard on deck and recorded 20 fish boated, including 9 short lings, a personal record for dink lings. I got into a hot bite on nice black rockfish, and kept 5 healthy specimens for the cooler. Probably would have had more if I'd had more swimbait bodies, but being from SC I rarely have to deal with catching more than one fish a day :smt003 so I wasn't used to it.
Water conditions and coastal scenery were awesome, especially the alpenglow effect of the early morning fog & sunrise. Simply amazing stuff. Sadly I forgot my camera, so no pics from me.
Ok, everyone now knows the food was incredible but a lot of us were surprised to hear "dinner is served" after stuffing ourselves with lumpia and fried fish, etc Saturday afternoon. Oh well, I still managed to sample some of the tasties inside. I broke even in the raffle with an NCKA shirt "and a sabiki", both of which were on my wish list of stuff to get "someday".
I had an interesting time hanging with the owner of Force 10, home of "storm sea skiing". I was stoked to see maps with hand written details by Steve Sinclair, a pioneer of the whole west coast surf ski scene, still up on the wall after all these years. Here's a little link to a story on Sinclair and his take on paddling open coast swells, with a dramatic flourish http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0798/todhunter/essay1.html
Hopefully Jason can carry the torch for the place.
Sunday I stopped off at Pepperwood Pottery in Anderson Valley, and had a nice talk with Doug the owner. He has some gorgeous handmade ceramics and his own gallery on a beautiful 8 acres where he's been living for 30 years. If I hadn't had a 4 1/2 hour drive ahead I could  have chatted with him all afternoon.
Thanks to Mooch for providing seemingly endless info on the new Trident, as well as lending his unique charm to the whole event, and to Bill who brought us all together in the first place. There a bunch of other folks out there that combined their efforts to make it a "best ever", kudos to all of you.
Hope to do it all again in '08, and next year I'm bringing a bunch of extra lures!

Thanks everyone for another great event at Elk.  The Food was off the hook once again, Brain G's Peach cobbler was incredible, (recipe?) MickFishes Steak da bomb and Leah's Curry Chicken awesome.  I figure it was a 30 course meal but once a year, why not.  Fishing was slow for me, but meeting all the new members and hangin with my bud's is why I always come to these events.

Priceless moments for me --  Listening to Ben and Don jam on the accoustics,  seeing Joel's future wife pull his kayak up the hill :smt008,  watching cpkayak at work tending his tequilla bar,  watching ChuckE prepare his fish fry,  hearing Joel and Andy with their Turkey calls (I think that's what it was?)  and mainly talking with everyone, the vibe is way cool.

See ya all soon

But, I did score the next generation hoodie.......life is good!

Yanno...

We might have to tone it down a little folks.  This tourney just might be more fun than the law allows.

Major kudos to the Great Whites, Bill, Erik, and everyone else who sponsored and/or participated.

I still can't believe my good fortune in walking away from the raffle with Erik's custom rod.  It's a magnificent piece of workmanship.  Can't wait to kill something with it.   :smt003

I managed a 9lb 13oz ling, but with the caliber of anglers participating, it was only good for something like 9th place.  Congratulations to JTF, Don and Tom for bringing home the BIG fish.

No wonder this is the premier fishing event of the year.

Hey Naoaki,  as I told you on Saturday, that's a Pacific sandlance.

Congrats to JTF.. for this years win! I was lucky enough to take over for Sean at the weigh station when JTF.. made a dramatic last minute bid for first place over the king of the last minute win himself Danglin.

Thanks to Sean and family for putting this on again, Erik for the getting the raffle organized again, everyone who brought the great grub, and the locals from Elk who wait every year for me to do more fish printing with them.  I'm a little sad in that this might have been my last NCKA event.  I'm moving to Oregon in the fall, but I'm really going to try and make it to Elk next year no matter how much WAF it costs.

NCKA, I would put my most precious possion in their hands and count on them to keep it safe. I was forced to do this Sat morning when I threw my back out launching at Elk. Tyler launched before me and never looked back trying to catch the group out front and I was forced to sit on the beach w/ back spasms that made me contemplate a helicopter ride out of there. I had a radio (thanks again Alien ) so I was able to talk to all and I had to make the decision on wether to pull the plug on Tyler's first ocean launch and Tournament and what would be a top ten first ever ling. Even when the fog started rolling in I was comforted by the fact that the men and women of NCKA were there to watch over and protect my Son. I did not want to put you guys in that position but you all stepped up huge. Thank you.
I found out right before the trip that Ty Is moving too Truckee So anyone who is going too Tahoe/Truckee give him a holler. He will be working at Sweets Handmade Candies on the main drag selling candy to pretty tourist girls. His Aunt owns the White Buffalo Trinket store next door so check in there if he's not at work. If Anyone has pics of Ty please e-mail them to me, as my internet connection is timing out before I can download them from this site.
I have decided to name the previous reigning Hobbit King Mooch as Ty's Godfather with the rest of you all as stand-ins. NCKA ROCKS!!!!
Too the Whites, Mr. BILL, Erick, Cris and the rest, the world needs many more people like you.

Wow... events like this just make me so proud to be part of this group.  I don't how we do it, but we always manage to step it up every year.  Congrats to Sean and his family, Erik, and everyone who contributed to the event in one way or another.

I especially wanna thank Andy "kicknbass", Bill, Chris, Dina, Kevin, and Frankfishing's two daughters for helping out with the fry duties.  Thanks also to Sean, Stu, Fuzz, Chris, and everyone who contributed fish.  It gets a little harder every year to keep up the production of fried fish to meet the consumption rate.  We sure ate a lot of fish!

WTG... JTF on that well deserved derby win.  Congrats also to Danglin and Fuzzy Tom.

JTF...... Congrats, but I believe your a sore winner, :smt012 " Whatever.." some winning speech there!!!!

Maybe I'll keep radio silence next time but i also believe that's half the fun,

I really tried to lose this thing, " Kevin " can attest....  He watched me land a 35/36" ling, got it netted on my

   yak      " Flip "  " Flop "  He's Gone.........

F#@$!@@# :smt013,  I couldn't believe I was so klutzy...  Dejected, I baited up, sent it down,...."Slam".

Very well could have been the same fish.......  To my down fall though, I think  this ling wanted to die...

A little on the Skinny side,  Bite out his tail, and a nasty looking parasite/sore thing,  1lb and 3oz more,

could have been a different story JTF........  Nice win, you earned it,

Get Cha next time...

Nice Paddle Scaw....  Now I'm on the Hunt for a Paddle Yak to go with my Kool Paddle....

Also investing in the Rollezzz,  I capsized 3 times on the way down, The scupper carts with Hobbies are just to

narrow to do any distance or terrain, not to mention possible damage to scupper holes, I'm done with those..

Will trade 3 scupper carts for one Rollezz!!!!

Sorry Alein,  Keeping the paddle...

 Ciao

What a weekend.  First off thanks to some of the most gracious people I've ever met, Sean and Leah White.  Thanks to everyone else I had the chance to strike up conversations with as well including Pat and Randy, Bigfoot, ChuckE, Bill and his wife, Stuart, PISCEAN, Brian G and many many more.

Did a little prefishing on Friday with Scwafish, PAL, cpkayak and Adam "Fishunter" (his second ocean voyage) and ended up with a couple legal lings, including a fat 33 incher that went around 14 lbs. (Special thanks to Paul for taking a nice on the water shot and posting it earlier) and another one released.  Also caught 3 vermilions and lost many more.  They were biting but very softly and biting the tails off our swimbaits.  Not much I can say about Saturday, I fished the same spots and couldn't hook crap except a nice looking canary rockfish.

Sunday, hooked up with BrianG for his first ab dive.  On the way out he told me he was an ex-water polo player, right on.  Showed him how to spot abs and he took over from there.  Ended up with 2 over 9" and one just under and all three were pretty heavy.

Another great event. Not much to add that the others haven't already said.

I landed one single, small copper all day.  :smt010 But the scenery up there makes the trip worth it.

Congrats to the big homie JTF. Good to see all the familiar faces and meet some new peeps. I kept my NCKA raffle stretch going. I have now won at least one great prize in every NCKA raffle I've attended. (6 or 7 now). So thanks to Joel for the Hook1 gift certificate and whoever donated the dry bag and Storm swimbaits. Thanks to EriK for coordinating the raffle, thanks to all who donated, cleaned, and cooked their fish, thanks to The Whites for organizing the event, and special thanks to DAN for telling all of us his GW encounter story AT LEAST 80 times over the week-end.

I took two extra days returning home. Just reviewed all six pages of posts with outstanding pictures. It's all been said already but I must add my two cents in a condensed version. Thanks to all of you who organized, sponsored, and contributed to this outstanding event. Congratulations to all the derby and raffle winners. That takes in about everyone including a local who bought one ticket. As always, the NCKA comraderie, food, etc. are tops. Photo contributions by all were outstanding. Adam, you have quite the collection of photos.

Chuck, I have more burners and pots when you need them. We can train people to batter and Panko the fish. Of all the fish preparations we all try, Chucks secret spices must be the ticket. It is the best!!
Oh, did I mention the veggies. They too are awesome.

Thank you Sean, Lea and the Elk community for making this outstanding event possible. Thank you each and every participant and contributor for a truely outstanding event. Let's do it again!!!

I, too, spent a few more days in the area and have been busy since.  When I think about all the effort it took to organize, carry off and clean up this event it amazes me, and I am truly thankful.  The chances of me getting to fish that area without a tourney were zero, about as good as my getting back to the beach in the fog without some help when my gps died.  I don't think I've eaten that much or that well in years! The townspeople were great, and it's a gorgeous area.
After fishing plastic for almost nothing for a couple of hours, I switched to a 5 oz iron with a  white glow in the dark skirt and single hook, both attached to the top swivel,  with  a shrimp fly teaser,  and then I hauled up three huge rockies before my 33 ling in about a half hour, and then I trolled my Walleye Runner and got a 27" ling, which I threw back because it wasn't going to beat the 35 incher on the beach, and I sure didn't want to haul any more pounds up that hill unless it did!
I'm going to need some help selecting a reel to go with the rod that I won, because up to now I've been a Big 5 and Walmart guy, figuring it was only a matter of time before that stuff went into the drink for keeps.
   Thanks again!  Tom

Tom, Adam.... I must confess that up until last year, I didn't own a reel worth more than about $50.  I just didn't think it was necessary to spend more money in a sport that's tough on equipment.  I have since broke down and finally bought a few reels retailing for over $100 and matched them up with decent rods in the $50 to $100 range.  Believe me, quality reels will be noticeable and pay off someday when you hook that once-in-lifetime drag burner.

Well, Ya probably didn't even know/mean what set me off,

When ya weighed in and beat me, I congratulated you and said " I guess I could use a Paddle "

You just blew me off and said " Whatever ".....

Kind of sensitive on my part to be put out by that....

No sleep for 4 days, 2 Dramamine on board, I was walking into

walls shortly after that,  and I was in quite a bit of pain, reason I had to come in early....

So those factors may have contributed towards my " Attitude ", and taking what you said the wrong way.....

  All Apologies,   :notworthy:

Your Definitely Showing Championship Form Now.....

 Again, Really... Congrats...

I was not feeling right about a " Sickly Ling " taking first anyway,  Did not seem right :drool

Sorry in advance for minor threadjack.
I've been super happy with my Abu reel for $85. I got it after watching Sean's rockfish schpiel at the fred hall show. It's handled 30lb spectra well, with no "sucking into the sideplate" problem I've seen before. I did go up to 30lb with the spectra though. My only gripe is the puny handle, but someone at Elk mentioned a "power handle" accessory for the small abu's. Can anyone  point in the best direction to find one?

My only gripe is the puny handle, but someone at Elk mentioned a "power handle" accessory for the small abu's. Can anyone  point in the best direction to find one?

Fishermans warehouse usually has them.  They cost about $20.

Many thanks guys. I found one at (where else) Cabela's for $15. Of course, while at the site I just hadda pick up the "mooch endorsed" orange fish gripper as well. Can't wait to try it out.
Yep, the reel is great for the rockfish, and handled the moderate hali at bean quite well too. I am stoked to try it with the power handle next week.

Hey Don, I'm sure whatever I said was most likely a misunderstanding, I was pretty delirious from running up that hill in my wetsuit and the damn eye candy :smt050 distractions trying to slow me down.  I honestly dont remember, but then again, who brought that damn wine, I was cloudy the rest of the day.  jtf..

More thanks to all who put in the time and effort in order for this event to happen; the White family, the town of Elk, Erik for the raffle, Chuck and his crew of frymasters, and of course all the folks of NCKA for providing the friendly atmosphere.  And of course Bill, without his help I would have missed the event this year after my stolen car/kayaks fiasco.

Congrats on your victory, John.  Way to cash in some karma...
