Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Native Mariner rudder cable replacement
« on: August 05, 2017, 05:33:12 PM »
2012 Mariner, one of the rudder cables frayed and broke. It has two ring terminals on separate cables that get put under a plate and tightened at the handle end. Anyone have a better solution then the $40 stainless steel replacements?

General Fishing Tips / Don't unbutton prematurely!!!!!
« on: May 19, 2017, 12:58:20 PM »
So not my story but I was there to witness it (pics so it DID happen)
A group of us made it out at Pacific City yesterday for some bottom fishing one of the guys who will remain anonymous (except for his picture) hooked a nice lingcod with a smaller one on the other hook... no net, fish grippers are on his hatch, smaller lings spits the hook so he reaches into the big boys mouth wearing NRS heavy gloves and drags it into his lap... landed!!! I took a couple of photos and he removes the 10 inch jig that he was holding it up with and sticks his rope up the back of the gills.... as he let's go of the mouth to grab the rope the lingcod lights up and proceeds to swim right off his lap and back into the Pacific.  :smt013 boy was he cursing loudly!!!

So just remember lip grippers or big game clip BEFORE YOU UNBUTTON that big old delicious fish.

Heroes On the Water (HOW) / A race for HOW North Oregon Coast
« on: May 13, 2017, 07:52:57 AM »
For those of you that might be up here later in June:
Let's have a little fun and raise some money for the North Oregon Coast H.O.W. Chapter.
As the title states it's a race:
Two categories peddle kayaks , paddle kayaks

$35 donation $10 per head for buffet ($10 per non participants) then  %'s of the remaining pot to go to first 3 places in each category rest to the chapter

Course will be the Nehalem river starting above the Miami Rv Rd bridge at Roy Creek boat launch at 0600 and ending At the highway 101 bridge.
Parking fees at the county parks at both ends are donated by the county parks department. We will need to coordinate shuttling to limit upper end parking so those with extra room speak up.

Rules: no sails or motors (peddle or paddle only) must have full salmon gear on board including your net (salmon net not trout, as in the same gear you will fish with after!) Starting line will be standing start next to your ride and at the starting you mount and go. First 3 peddles and first 3 paddles to cross under the bridge will take placing.

We're going to have or June HOW event 8 seats starting at 10:00 am and running till 2:00 pm to hopefully get our heroes into some springers.
Registration attached and check (Shannon Anderson) or cash with registration. And if you would like to PayPal please pm or email me first.
The banquet after will be pizza buffet and minors will be permitted during our event. Non participants will be $10 for buffet $5 fir kids 12 and under.

Craftsmen's Corner / Had a burning metal party today
« on: May 06, 2017, 10:03:08 PM »
Had a Saturday shop get together with MattM and SamM (no relation).
Matt wanted a rack for his harbor freight trailer and Sam wanted to reinforce his trailer sides and add some top handles to the sides.
Was actually kinda fun for me directing both of them on the cutting and grinding while a was burning metal. At one point I was welding Matt's pieces together while Sam was grinding paint off the spots we were welding, then Matt was grinding welds smooth while I welded Sam's parts on. Had a good time even though we didn't fish..... talked about fishing though so that counts right?!?!?!?
Matt's rack is able to switch from one kayak centered to hauling two Hobies with the removable bar we made to extend out to the fender edges he's going to drill it and put 2 hitch pins in each bar at the tabs. . He can haul 3 boats if the deck is clear..... he just needs to convince his wife he needs another boat  ;)   Hope that don't get him slugged in the shoulder   :violent1:

I have a mechanic up the road that rents the floor for $20 for 1/2 day $40 for the day as long as he has 1 empty bay out of the 4. Bonus I get to leave my welder and fabrication gear there to save time loading and unloading.

General Talk / "Old Fart" amputee veteran in need of help
« on: April 19, 2017, 11:35:47 AM »
Some of the NWKA members have met my father in law Richard, the old fart with one short foot from a toe amputation a few years ago. He's in the hospital again for a foot wound infection and recently lost a tie on his good foot. We're trying to raise money to help get him a mobility scooter to help him get around without having to worry about another sore that gets infected. We're hoping to raise $8000 to buy a scooter and build a rack for it on his truck as well as get him a decent deck for his Rv I built a cheesy one from $10 worth of recycled wood ( looks better cleaned up). He qualified for a scooter on Medicare but since they say there " in home mobility " and he lives on an Rv he got disqualified. He don't need it in the house he needs it to get around outside. We started a gofund me page for him if anyone can help out.

We're selling shirts to help raise funds for the HOW NOC Chapter
You DO NOT have to attend to order a shirt but you will need to cover shipping from 97118 or arrange for NCKA express back down after the tournament.

Ok here's the prices and styles. I had enough people comment on not having the HOW logo as standard, so it's optional. Shirts will only have a name on them if you order them that way at an extra $8 as its embroidered on and the HOW sleeve logo is also optional  at $13 these are high quality embroidery. The event and NWKA logos will be screen printed NOT ink Jet as we have had the last two years. Cut off will me May 10th or so as they need time to get any embroidery done and they do them in shop. I'll get ordering information and hats up hopefully Monday afternoon or evening. We're setting this up so orders are direct to the shop and should take credit cards.

Will hopefully be adding a men's tank top
