The lighter the line you use, the more of it you can have on the spool, so you're maybe less likely to be spooled.  Since salmon are open-water fish you can play them on lighter line - they've got to tire eventually, even on 4lb line.

Now bottomfish, they like to stick their head in a hole if they can, plus you need strength to pull free of snags and protect against abration.    Those reasons pretty much mandate ~20lb line or better.

Thats a hell of a fish Allen.

I plan on using Ande 2-4 lb for mooching and 6-10 for trolling (dependin on some early season testing)

Joel, while riding shotgun on Allen's tripple last year I landed a chunky 10-12 lb salmon on 12lb test. Very doable.

Well, as previously stated, we got lucky.  We were drifting the Susitna River just south of Denali.  We had only expected trout to be in the river so were geared up accordingly.  One everning we pulled into a pool at the mouth of a feeder creek to camp for the night.  This was at 2:00AM and yes, it was still light out.  As we were pulling up we noticed large kings breaking the surface.  Forgetting to set up camp, we broke out the trout rods and the biggest spoons we had.  Not 10 minutes goes by and I hooked up on a 25 pounder.  In the next 2 hours, 2 of us landed 6 kings between 25 and 45 pounds, all on 6 pound tackle.  We're were pretty much hooked up the entire time.  Called it a night at 4:00AM ... still light out.  When we got up the next morning the school was gone.

The pool was perhaps 100 feet across.  Every fish we hooked stayed in the pool, taking some nice runs, but never leaving the pool.  Had they entered the main river I'm pretty sure they would have been lost.
