I had a great time and enjoyed a new location. Several of you told me you would put up some fish soup recipes so please don't forget. I hope to make the Sonoma/Mendo opening on June 13th. Who's in? My son is out of school after next week and we will be making trips up there to spear and dive for abs. Company welcome. Thanks to everyone for a great time. Who made the berry cobbler?

It's was me.  I'll post the fish soup recipe later tonight after finishing cleaning all my gears and post the picture report.

First of all I would like to thank Eric for organizing this great annual Nick's hookup at Shelter Cove, and hat off to all the people that make this event a success.

Arrived to Shelter Cove around noon and was greeted by the deers

Drove down to the boat launch to meet some NCKAer just came back with their catches

Stopped by the fish cleaning station later to see how's the fishing  :smt007

What an amazing weekend.  Great conditions, awesome fishing, fantastic food and super cool people.  I enjoyed catching up with my old Nor Cal buddies and meeting all the new people, too.  I will definitely be back for Gimme Shelter 4.  I may have had to drive 1276 miles roundtrip to make it but I caught at least that many fish (or it seems like it, anyway :)  ).

Here are a few pics.  The black rockfish is the biggest one I have ever caught.  The pic doesn't do it justice but that is a 7inch swimbait in it's mouth.  I also caught about 3 legal lings, 2 shorty lings, lots and lots of blacks, blues and greenlings.  Most of the blacks were really chunky - had several drag rippers.  An absolute blast.

Fishing is cool

Caught my first fish and it's 22.5" almost 7lbs

Did not try to hard to catch fish just enjoy my time on the water and meeting other NCKAer.  Got back around noon to get ready for the potluck and drove around Shelter Cove to take some scenery pictures.

I had a great time.
Thanks for setting this thing up, Eric.
Your enthusiasm is infectious.
Like a disease.
Without a cure.
It’s MAAAADNESS! (La Locuuuuuuura!)

Congrats to everybody…because, well, everybody caught big fish! But a special nod to Domenic and Jed; a PacButt and a giant wolf eel!?
I’ve always said that if you spend enough time at The Cove, you’ll see some crazy things. But it turns out you can see some pretty crazy things in a mere weekend’s time.

Personally, I caught a lot of quality fish. From lings to cabs to verms to sculpin. Even the gophers were world-class! Hahaha!

But I only brought home 3 fish: a cab, a black, and a verm. Maybe I’ve been infected by Eric’s enthusiasm for conservation. Maybe I just didn’t want to feel guilty for contributing to the take of 400+ fish from the reef. Maybe because I see the ocean every day, and I have the opportunity to take rockfish every weekend. Maybe because I will return to The Cove very soon and quite often. I don’t know. Without sounding too preachy (probably too late), I think it’s up to each one of us to decide how much fish to take. Sometimes it’s cool to take 20 and sometimes it’s cool to take 3. As long as it’s within the limits, it’s all good. After all, we are conservationists AND harvesters.

The food was great and plenty as any other NCKA's potlucks.  Thanks to all the master chiefs, everyone enjoy the food & scenery.  We even spoted a couple of whales during the potluck very close to shore! (sorry no picture of the whales)  :smt003

After we ate all the food  :smt003 (j/k there's lots of left over) the NCKA's band entertained us.  We had a couple special appearances:

The Kelp Trumpet player  :smt003

And the male belly dancer  :smt044

We hung out until the Hotel manager kicked us out  :smt003 (j/k she's very nice) and move the party to the campground

The kids enjoyed toasting/burning the mash mallows  :smt002

We know it's time to breakup when the kid's drunk or tired  :smt003

Being a Greenhorn to ocean fishing from a yak, the weekend was filled with many emotions, memories, and lessons.

Because this is the report section I'll start with my catch.
The opener on Fri. I kept a nice Cabezon, 2 nice Blacks, and a Black and Yellow. I released an under size Lingcod and some smaller Blacks.
On Sat. I didn't keep anything but released 3 undersize Lings, 1 under size Cabezon, and 5 Blacks.
I didn't fish Sunday, as the Sun, swell, and swill :smt002 of the previous days had taken their toll on my 52 year old body. My catch may not have been the monsters I saw at the launch, but for me it was exciting to have anything tugging at my line.
Fridays keepers

Now about the emotions, memories, and lessons of Gimme Shelter III which are way more important than the size of the catch! :smt003

First I'd like to give a shout out to all of you that helped me gear up for this for the past 3 months and those I shared it with the past 3 days.

Eric / Abking Almighty,  First for throwing this "Epic" hookup and party. :smt004 Also for answering many of my Greenhorn questions about rods, reels, the safety of my boat in the ocean and my safety in the ocean.
Thanks my friend, you rock!

MattS / Gear Master, Thanks for our first Whiskeytown trip, The "secret tip" :smt002 on where to get my reels dirt cheap, the personalized HEAD KNOCKER that looks as great as it works :smt013 and the "Starter Kit" of jigs, lead heads, plastics, etc. that you craft so masterfully. For splitting the site fee, showing me how to clean and prepare abalone, and my first abalone meal. Also for knowing when your at work, and when your NOT! :smt002
Thanks again, I value your friendship and look forward to many more local hookups!

AlsHobie, Stoggie, Fishmaster1, You guys were great neighbors and it was great getting to know you.
Al and Stogg, thanks for the frequent attitude adjustments :smt002, the lively conversation and that 9% beer
that kicked my ass Thursday night and kicked me in the head Friday morning. :smt013 AlsHobie, Thanks for the
too much water in a boat /tether gear/ I'm glad I wear a wet suit lesson. Fishmaster1, I admire the way you include your son "Cochino" in your fishing and diving activities, set a good example for him and enjoy him while he is young, because before you know it he's grown and gone.

Ariel Sea, Jedmo, Thanks to both of you for sharing your knowledge, wisdom and expertise with greenhorns like me. Ariel, thanks for the knot tying lessons! Jed thanks for the Uni lesson! I'm certain I'll learn many more lessons
from you both in the future.

I could go on and on naming names but just let me say that everyone I have met and or corresponded with from this site I now consider a friend. The NCKA is a class act and I will forever be grateful to be a part of it!

I hope I passed the audition and advanced past the Greenhorn/Newbie status!

When is GS IV? I can hardly wait to do it next year!

P.S. Was anyone else a little haired out in the Sat. morning Swell?

Here is my Thursday - Friday report...

Thursday - Left home around 930AM and headed up to Lola's in Santa Rosa. Got there around 11AM and Sackyak calls me and tells me he is leaving Monterey and he will meet me for dinner. I said sure but knew I was going to be sleeping by the the time he got to SC.  :smt005 Bought some tamales, Negro Modelo and salsa at Lola's and headed to SC. Got there around 330PM after a few dog stops. Checked in at the hotel and walked over to the Tides and waited for Sackyak till 600 PM then headed back and picked up a take-out pizza for dinner. After dinner, I have a glass of wine and am getting ready for bed and there is a knock on the door. I open the door and 2 dudes carrying beer and fishwakers? say hello.  :smt005 I was thinking, who are these guys??? before I figured out it was Abking.

Friday - met Sackyak at the launch at 530AM and he launched at 545AM. I set up my Yaks and drove back up to the Tides to hookup with the Auburn Trout Dude. Showed him how to use my FF/GPS and gave him one of my custom green thrasher rigs. I launched around 630 AM with the boyz and decided to hang with them since my FF wasn't working and it was kind of foggy. Fished with Aerial Sea, Ab Man, Jedmo, Sin Coast and others. Was going to tease Ab Man about his Cobra Triple rigging, but he is a big guy and I am a little guy.  :smt011 Caught about 6 rockies and released them all. Tried a lot of different tackle but had the most luck with a 4 oz green thrasher with a glow single tail teaser. Marked waypoints where fish were caught. Eventually Sackyak showed up after a commando paddle up to the lost coast and back. He had done pretty well and I hooked an 18" cabbie when he came by to say hi. Kept the cabbie and cooked it in foil for dinner. Took a hike with Karen and Mollie on the Black Sands beach in the afternoon. Really small grain sand which was fun to walk on. Just don't let it get in your fishing reel or it will be the "Full Tani". :smt013

I was watching the guys fishing with my binocular from the Tide Inn and getting ready to go Ab dive when I noticed someone was in the water and there're several kayaks surrounding him.  Found out later that Al's yak was taking in water and need to be towed back to shore.  Watched my hero Ariel towing Al's yak back to the boat launch with many escorts follow behind him made me admiring our NCKA group even more than before!

Ariel's cooling off after the tow

Lots of water in Al's yak

Ariel's trying to pull out the octipus from his hatch

An octipus caught at daytime?  Hard to believe!
