Title: Kraken Sailing
Post by: Gearaddict on July 10, 2016, 09:30:42 AM
Has anyone thought of putting a sail on your kraken?   I saw a really cool sail kit and was wondering if anyone has tried this or is using one on a kraken?

Technically, any boat over 12 feet in length (in California) with a sail requires DMV registration.  I've heard that AI's in Southern California are being checked.  Something about them being wind powered and not people powered.

Same is technically true if you run a motor (electric, gas or propane) on a kayak too.  Crappy part, once you register, you have to continue until you claim the boat as destroyed with DMV; can't nonop a boat :smt013

Not doubting you, but where is that regulation written?

I thought the small Hobie sail was expensive, but it's only half the price of that one. Anyways, it sounds like a great idea. If you do give it a try, I'd like to hear how it works out.

Thank you, I stand corrected.  Twelve foot must have been wishful thinking on my part.  Eight foot means all four of my Hobies, not just the AI, would need to be registered if I used their sails.
