This thread was originally created in 2006. Lots of changes have been made since that time. I'm sure many of the county and state access areas have been closed due to budget cuts. The Delta Meadows ramp for example. Launch prices have probably changed also.
This thread is meant to be a resource for the NCKA community. All members are welcome to post changes and are encouraged to add new locations.
Enjoy,

Walnut Grove: New Hope Landing
New Hope Landing is on part of the Mokelumne River. Nice launch ramp and parking lot. Sign says $10 to launch or $5 to park. Nobody in the office to confirm kayak price. The water there looks nice with trees and growth along the river.

Walnut Grove Marina is located on the opposite side of Dead Horse Island from New Hope. Also on the Moke.
The sign posted stated $10 launch. I went in the store and asked the nice lady how much for a kayak. She says "One of those little plastic boats?...$5". I forgot to check out the ramp. I'm sure it looks the same as the others.

Cliffhouse Fishing Access is on 160 near the Rio Vista bridge. I drove right past this one and had to turn around to check it out. The is a Sacto County park with a self pay box, $4 for parking. This was one of the best non-boat ramp launch areas I found today. Easy walk down few stairs, across some old drift wood and to a small beach. Direct access to the Sacramento River with good vegetation along the banks. Looks like a great area when the wind isn't blowing.

Brannan Island SRA near Rio Vista. Just noticed my state park pass has expired. The kind lady at the gate let me in for a 30 min no-charge visit. This is a very nice park. Camp grounds looked good, day use area along the slough was nice. The boat ramp was the biggest and best looking one I visited today. This ramp launches into Threemile Slough. From there you have access to the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin river if you want to go that far. Kayakers just pay for parking/day use, no launch fee.

I stopped at two marinas on Bethal Island. First was Russo's Marina. Very nice facility directly across from Franks Tract. Good parking with a nice ramp. $10 launch fee. It was interesting to see over the levee into all that water in Franks. I can see why this is a popular location for the bass tournaments. I'll be back to try this place.

A little father down the road is Sugarbarge Marina. Looks like a nice restaurant or bar from the outside. Ramp fee is also $10. Don't think access to Franks is any better here than from Russo's.

Whiskey Slough Marina is of course on Whiskey Slough. It's a funky little old marina with a good two lane ramp. According to the sign it's $8 to launch. I took a drive along the slough up to Twentyone Mile slough and Turner cut. There are some interesting tullies that could produce some bass. A few bass boats and jet skies on the water.

Impressive work.
I am going to have to get friendlywith Google Maps.
Makes me wonder if the Delta deserves its own area on this forum. What do you think?

I tend to focus my kayak-type activity in the areas of the Delta where the various rivers enter, or where there are large 5 mph zones That keeps me out of most of the powerboat madness.
Like the bass, I try to be in out-of-the-way places not attractive to the cruisers, speed boats, water skiers, etc. I do fish the busy areas once in while - but almost always from "o-dark thirty" to before noon.
Reality also led me to maintain my own modest motorboat, occasionally aka yak tender.
I am enjoying your posts. Keep up the good work!

Georgiana Slough Fishing Access is located a few miles south of Walnut Grove. Take Andrus Island Road south along Georgiana Slough. This is a Sac county park, no fee...that's right..free access. I was surprised to see a nice parking lot and a mowed picnic area. Good looking slough with rock levees and lots of growth. According to my map the area a little farther south is good for stripers. It also looks like small mouth territory. There is a dock and an interesting ramp for small boats. The big boats can't launch here.

Hogback Fishing Access is located on Grand Island Road along Steamboat Slough. This is a Sac county park that has self pay parking fees. Very nice ramp launches into a cove that has LMB potential. The cove then leads to Steamboat Slough for striper action.

Awesome posts! Anybody even thinking of trying the delta now has all kinds of possbilities!
-
Here is a clue to Delta access:
The Delta has a number of abandoned or rarely used ferry locations. On each side of the waterway the now defunct ferry crossed, there is a nice ferry ramp, wooden or concrete, that slopes gently into the water. The ramp is where the ferry boat nestled against shore and where cars, trucks, or horse-drawn wagons drove onto the ferry. Here's a couple to get you started:
Near Stockton go north and exit Interstate 5, going west on Eight Mile Road. Turn right (north) on Correia Road and go to the end of the public section to find a nice cement ramp; its mate on the other side can be reached from Highway 12 west of Lodi, turn south on Correia Road. Either will put you in the middle of an area where even professional bass tournaments are won.
As far as I can tell, this is the spot and you can investigate the map to check out the area:
http://maps.google.com/maphp?tab=vl&hl=en&q=
Go further west on Eight Mile road until it ends, turn left (south) and go to the end of Empire Tract Road where there is a big loop of dirt road turnaround and the slough tees into the main channel. There is a wooden ramp still occasionally used by an old landing craft used to ferry farm equipment to a private island.
As far as I can tell, this is the spot, You can see the ramp sticking out into the slough right across from the northern part of the turnaround loop. You can investigate the map to check out the area:
http://maps.google.com/maphp?tab=vl&hl=en&q=
There is plenty of road shoulder parking at both places; expect a number of bank fisherman for company. No launch fees, no improvements, no security, of course. I’ve never had any problems even late at night, but you have to decide if the spot is right for you and yours.
Anybody know how to research old Delta ferry crossing locations?
Already know of some you can share?
How about you post some launch spots in an area of the Delta you are familiar with?
Good luck, and thanks.
-
Great observation Don. Old ferry locations would make a nice ramp.
I was able to locate both of the locations you mentioned. White's Slough looks like a great fishy area and the ramps would make easy access.
The one on the channel looks close to a good group of islands including this one.
This ain't no delta meth shack!
-
No, Al, Tinsley is private for big, fancy boats that are rarely ever used. One fun place nearby is on the same side of the channel as the wooden ferry ramp. Just west across the slough is a largely sunken island friendly to small craft , especially at high tide. Fish the deeper channels between the weed beds and the tules around the outer fringes of the island.
Should have mentioned that along Eight Mile Road there also three commercial marina areas, pay-for launches and all.
I am not sure how many marina's with launch-for-fee ramps or lifts or crane hoists there are in the Delta. Must be approaching a hundred. Look at the map, choose an area that looks good, and find the closest marina. Call them and negotiate a 'yak fee - many will waive it for hand launched, person-powered boats, many will not!
(Can't wait for my new kayak, the beach is a bummer and summer is fading.)
-
Got to post a disclaimer on the Correia Road ferry ramp reached going south from Highway 12 west of I-5: my canoe log notes it is there but I never drove that route to check parking on that side.
I have used the ramp on the south side of the slough accessed from Eight Mile Road and it is good to go for access and parking.
Trying to keep it real.
-
My favorite Delta map is from Fish-n-Map Co.:
https://secure.fishnmap.com/catalogframe.html
Marinas, ramps, waterproof plastic, and on and on.
-
Got to post a disclaimer on the Correia Road ferry ramp reached going south from Highway 12 west of I-5: my canoe log notes it is there but I never drove that route to check parking on that side.
This looks like a real nice fishy area, but don't take the Hwy 12 route.
I took a drive to this location after work today. The road is a single lane along the levee that takes you to a dead end where the ramp must be located. Problem is the end of the road is fenced and posted with no access or view of the ramp. A braver person than I could launch off the rock levee.
I did notice the ramp on the other side as I was leaving and it looks like a good access. I'll take a drive there next week to confirm.
-
Scouted out the 8 Mile Road launches into the Delta. (Take Interstate 5, go west on 8 Mile Road).
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=38.048361,-121.419868&spn=0.192499,0.186768&om=1
Just before the first bridge, take a left to go to Paradise Point. This is a full service marina with boat rentals, a general store, and The Breadfruit Restaurant (Caribbean food, mon!). It also has an observation tower and a picnic area designed to be out of the hot summer sun.

Back on 8 mile Road heading west you come to the second, green, bridge. Turn left to go to King Island resort. A somewhat smaller, rougher launch. General store.

Back on 8 Mile Road going west, just across the green bridge turn right onto Correia Road. Keep going as the road turns from rough paved to well graded gravel and back again a couple times. You will notice a cement ferry ramp with its mate across the slough.
.

Go back to 8 Mile Road, turn right and go to the end of the road. Turn left and go to the end of the paved levee road. You will see a wooden ferry ramp to your right. There is a “no everything sign,” so it is your decision whether or not to use it. I’d tell you about my decades of experience there, but I better take the 5th.
Turn around and go back on the levee road , cross 8 Mile Road and you are at Herman & Helen’s resort. A floating restaurant, store, and a small launch ramp squeezed in.

There is bank fishing here and there off most of the roadways, and if you had an adventurous frame of mind you might be able to rough launch also.
-
Good info. I've been to the two marinas you noted. Paradise has a nice fishy area on the slough to the south.
Thanks for the additions Don

How do you do the Google Earth kmz file thing?
Thanks.
By the way, I posted a link to this thread in NorCal Inland.

Looks from this map / satellite photo like there might be public access at the end of West Woodbridge Road of the Sycamore Slough area of the South Mokelumne River, anybody try this?
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=15&ll=38.150487,-121.497803&spn=0.024029,0.02223&t=h&om=1
I have fished this area by power boat. It had large- and small-mouth bass, crappie, stripers, and various panfish. It might also be a downstream take-out for a float trip from Wimpy’s / New Hope landing (upsteam where West Walnut Grove Road crosses the river). Salmon and steelhead migrate through this area in season.
Thanks.
-
No joy.
Drove north on I-5, off at Highway 12, then north again on Thonrton Road to West Woodbridge Road; turned left and went under the I-5 freeway to the end of the road.. End of road was fenced and posted. No public access to the Mokelumne there.
Went back to Thornton Road and drove north to Peltier Road, then west on Peltier under I-5 to Blossom road. On Blossom across Beaver and Hog Sloughs, both looked great, but again bridge approaches fenced and posted no trespassing or parking.
Here's the general area:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&z=13&ll=38.192863,-121.457977&spn=0.088504,0.077076&om=1
Blossom deadends into Walnut Grove Road. Went left past the familiar Wimpy's / New Hope area, over the second bridge past Giusti's resturant, and up onto River Road along the levee. Possible rough launching by lowering a 'yak by rope but tough without at least two people (and maybe a block and tackle). A more detailed investigation of every posssible spot might show an easier launch but I did not have time for more than a driveby.
North on River Road which becomes Highway 160, past Walnut Grove, Locke, etc. Crossed the river just before Courtland to scout Elk Sough on what I think is called Road 142: slough very fishy, woody but levee marked private and no trespassing everywhere. Couldn't tell if the slough connects to the Sacramento River at its north end; google Maps suggests not:

Back across the river and north to Sacramento to look and Bengal, Savannah, and hybrid Bengal-Savannah cats.

No new 'yak launches to report.

Free almost always (cannot remember last time a fee was charged and no fees posted). Bass go for spinnerbaits, plastic worms; watch for stripers in season.

Buckley Cove
Still further west is Buckley Cove.
This is the best, busiest, and most secure launch. Of course, it is always for-fee. Hand-carried kayaks may get by with just a vehicle parking fee.
Bass in Buckley Cove and along the channel in the weedbeds hit crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and everything else from time to time. This is a frequent weigh-in spot for bass tournaments (translation: anglers harvest bass from all over, bring them here in livewells, and turn them loose in this area after they are weighed).

There is a quasi-private launch ramp in north Stockton near the Lincoln Village West Marina. Free for “berthers” at the marina; $20 for all others; but harbormaster told me free for canoes and kayaks hand-carried to the launch.

Great thread. I have a $30K bass boat and still frquently launch yaks in the delta :smt001. You can add to the list Holland Riverside Marina near Bethel. There is a bridge that offers free access or you can launch at the marina for $10. Good LM fishing in Rock Slough.

Tips on using kmz files? I'd be happy to use them if I knew how. This is a Google Earth thing? versus Google Maps?
I will lurk aroung the Google Earth stuff to see what I can find a on my own.

I think I may have found a launch site with direct access to Mildred Island. By taking Don's suggestion of using old ferry sites, it looks like there might be the remains of a ferry crossing on W Lower Jones Road that could possible work for a launch site. I will try to drive by this soon check it out.
This site shows the location of a Mildred island ferry

Sweet work, Brian 3d - regardless of what your onsite investigation turns up.
Did you just stumble on the ferry notation on the map or does MapTech let you search somehow?
Could you take and include a picture of whatever you find in your online report?
Again, great work.
Thanks!

I simply stubled across the ferry crossing, after remembering your comment about using them as a launch site. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to directly search for the crossings. I did notice that they seam to be listed on the 'Fish-n-Go' maps. It also looks as if there was another crossing just to the north of Mildred.

I hope you can find an easy launch access for Mildred. I've heard good things about that area.
I took a ride out there after I started this thread. Went out Bacon Island road and W. Lower Jones Rd. The only launches I found would be off the levee. I wouldn't be able to do that by myself.

Thanks Brian.. I appreciate the additional locations and information that you and others have been posting.
This kind of info takes the mystery out of delta fishing.

Did you see this as you were scanning the shoreline?
Plane over Mildred (http://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=&ie=UTF8&t=h&om=1&z=17&ll=37.968908,-121.534914&spn=0.003882,0.004442)
Hey Al,
I also saw the plane and thought is was cool. I am not sure what the odds are of catching a plane in a satelite image but either way, it woke me up. I thought the plane looked a little low to be headed to the Stockton airport, but I am not a pilot.
I will be sure to post an update when I get out to Mildred Island, but I am gathering that the old ferry crossing is not accessable or no longer there.
I think that I am free on Sunday and I may join you at Delta Meadows. I am still deciding, the possibility of Striper or Salmon is making this a tough choice.

Vieira's on the lower Scaramento River just before it joins the ship channel above Rio Vista. I am trying to figure out how to salmon fish here. The launch ramp puts you immediatley on the salmon waters. It is easily reached driving north from Highway 12 just east of the Rio Vista (Highway 12) brdige over the Sacramento River.
Here is the spot:

This looked like as good a place as any for this information.
The delta_tides_9-21-06.kmz I got from here http://www.calfishing.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=3&topic_id=16478&mode=full&page= (cut and paste if the link doesn't work). This file contains markers for most of the major sloughs and rivers in the delta and has links to tide tables for the exact areas marked. No more guessing where some sloughs are or how to figure out the tide differences. Swimbait from Calfishing did a lot of work and I'd just like to thank him for it.
The Big Break.kmz file lists the most accessable launches to get into Big Break (east of the Antioch Bridge) and a bit of information about each place. Two of them are currently closed by the park district but will reopen soon.

Wow! Tremendous intel here! Thought I would toss in Ko-Ket landing. It is in a good spot for salmon on the old Sac. Address is listed as Isleton, but it is actually closer to Walnut Grove--about 10 miles up river from Vierra's. I live right downriver across from the Ryde Hotel. If anyone wants to PM me you can launch for free at my place.- Jeff

Well worth it! Access via this free ramp to Lost Slough, Sacramento River, Snodgrass Slough, Mokelumne River. I use this access the most. Never paid its free. While doing some shore fishing over the winter, a Patrol Officer carded me and told me that this coming summer all Delta posted No Parking will be enforced (be forewarned) so then he told me about the Locke Parking and Meadows Slough Launch.

I've been trying to find a place to launch and hit the I-5 bridge over lost slough and thought this was it. Walnut Grove Marina appears to be the closest safest launch. Will be fishing near here one day later this week as schedule allows.

Well I can answer my own question now. I went down and took a look and everything was posted, fenced and gated. There is an old house that might have access if you lived there or were friends with the owner. Here are a few photos I took...

I ended up launching almost directly across the river from the cliff house. You can find it by looking for the cell phone tower close to the parking area and there is a rusted shipwreck on the river. It has good access to the water. It's a very short walk to the water.

This thread was originally created in 2006. Lots of changes have been made since that time. I'm sure many of the county and state access areas have closed due to budget cuts. This one and the Delta Meadows ramp for example.

There's a great spot to launch for free on the Sacramento just southeast of Rio Vista at the Threemile slough bridge across hwy 160 from Brannan Island State Park next to what used to be windy cove park. It can get busy with people fishing from shore and parking is limited but you could also pay $8 and launch from Brannan Island State Park. Here is a google map link: https://goo.gl/maps/yDmzB
Hogback Island on one of my favorite sloughs, Steamboat is another good launch spot. Google map link here: https://goo.gl/maps/gIqbG

You can launch into steamboat just not from Ryer island. Ryer is all private. You can only launch if you know someone that lives in Ryer island.

Sorry Yakkr? Was that in response to my question? I"m very confused I" thought we were talking about locaiton SE of Rio Vista. Ryer Island is north, no?

The cost to launch a kayak is $5. If you launch before 9 AM, you can pay the fee in the restaurant, otherwise in the store. Ramp is easily accessible for kayak launching, but there has been a lot of floating vegetation blocking the ramp making it hard to launch a kayak this week.
The store has free "home made" maps of the area, marking snags and fishing holes. Be sure to ask for one. Wimpy's Marina web site is http://www.wimpysmarina.com/
Both Wimpy's and New Hope Landing are on the same street a few hundred yards apart.

Walnut Grove: New Hope Landing Update
Walnut Grove: New Hope Landing

I have launched from this ramp twice this week and the fee for launching kayaks is still $10. The ramp is easily accessible for launching a kayak and parking for vehicles without trailers is on the street above the boat trailer parking lot. This launch area also has clean restrooms. I am attaching two pictures, one facing the ramp and the other facing the river after launching.

Hogback Island Recreation Facility Update:
Hogback Island costs $5 per car and you can launch either from the boat ramp or from shore. There are Porta-potties on-site. I have launched 3 times from here over the last week and the boat ramp has been covered with floating vegetation in the morning. I have been launching from shore and have marked two places you can launch from if no-one is fishing from these spots. I have caught LM Bass and small Stripers from this area on both sides of the river.

IIRC some sign about $5/day parking but I've never paid or heard of any tickets. Its one block from Antioch PD. I wouldn't worry about Parking Pass unless the lot is getting full of trucks with boat trailers. AFAIK its in operation 24/7/365. My only pet peeves/suggestions are:
1)People in cars obviously not actively boating like to park right up where I want to park for the 2 minutes it takes to drop my boat on the ramp. They just sit there smoking and drinking in cars because I guess its the best view.
2)No bathrooms within 200+yrds of ramp area, I guess because the area is supposed to be clear of anyone not launching boat (see #1).

As you can see its about 1/4 trail from parking lot to "ramp". Trail is flat wide gravel for most of the 1/4 mile, so bring a cart. I did it with just bow dolly but wished I had a cart.
Ramp is some plywood and or planks that go from firm mud to soft mud to muddy water.
Parking lot and ramp is FREE but lot has gates and park closes in evening (forgot exact specs).
While its not 24/7/365 like Antioch Marina and harder to launch and retrieve "clean", its much less crowded and less windy and less wavy and lots of nice shallow protected waters to explore.
I think there MIGHT have been a working water fountain and even faucet but don't quote me.
Posted as of today:
Big Break: Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is present in the water, and toxins have been detected. Avoid any contact with cyanobacteria or scums in the water, and keep dogs away from the water.

Interesting dock, but it looks like it might be a bit challenging with a heavy sot fishing kayak. And definitely not AI-friendly...
Its soft but not too tricky to walk while "king konging"(carrying overhead) my fairly big and heavy Tarpon16i. I guess you could also cart your boat over and slide from cart to pillows. Main feature besides semi-soft pillows are the low hand rails on either side that make it nice and easy to Launch And Retrieve once seated. If you got your scuppers plugged its easy to LAR while staying 100% dry from head to toe.
Main drawback of this Kayak LAR is often choppy water once past the boat ramps and high winds. I've never seen ANY windsurfers. They are common at the not too far away Palo Alto boat launch, and that has issues due to low tide/mud flats. Once had a very worried windsurfer asking me "Where is the channel?!?!" because he was semi-stuck in mud and tide was going out. Maybe the Palo Alto location gets high wind but it blows from West (land) so no big chop. Windsurfers also common in SF Bay at SF/Daly City.
What is "AI-friendly"?

I would skip the pillows and launch off the dock if possible. I have a kayak (Ocean Kayak Malibu two) that cracks at the scuppers when you sit on it on the ground. As a rule, I never sit in kayaks unless they are in the water to minimize the risk of cracks as the bottom flexes.

I found launching off of docks are more difficult that just shoreline launching. You have to be a very good balancer and quick to scoot ass off dock and into seat, without the yak sliding away. Looks nice though!

a friend showed me a method where you use the paddle to secure things as you scoot across. you start on your butt on the dock and end on your butt in the kayak. the paddle is the "bridge" between the boat and dock.
now my hobie compass, i can damn near step in, and quickly sit down.

great thread!! the Delta is daunting for a new kayaker. a thread like this helps immensely.
I totally agree. New to kayak fishing and I gravitated to this post because I've always wanted to fish the delta but so far I've logged a lot of time researching and zero hours of actual delta fishing on a kayak.
