General Talk / Re: Bodega Bay Fishing?
« on: January 28, 2019, 06:04:47 PM »
Report time....

Perfect day to be out there. Partly cloudy, a bit of fog, and winds were light.

Got the pots soaking and started to fish. We were in about 50' of water. We had a sabiki with a lead head with a 5" soft plastic instead of a weight at the bottom. My buddy hooked up within 15 minutes. It was at LEAST 3". Seriously. Smallest flatfish I've seen. We fished for an hour or so, got a few other small bites, but nothing else landed. I suspect we should've tried deeper water, but it was fun knowing they were there.

The crabbing was good. We caught our limits in just a few hours of soaking. Used duck carcasses, squid, and some fish heads (not salmon) that we bought at an Asian market. Crabs didn't seem to have a preference to what was in the bait bag. Best pot had 5 keepers in just an hour soak. Most were the size where you need to measure, but we had a half dozen that were nice crabs. Our biggest one had no claws, so that was a mercy killing.

This has made my crabbing trip potential much more interesting. I'll refresh myself on sandab regs. Thanks for the tips!!! I'll throw in a report when I'm finished.

The sandabs sound interesting. Love eating them, but I've never fished for them. My pots will be in the 40-50' range, so that may be the same neighborhood. I'll give them a try. I'm assuming you bounce the bottom with a sabiki while drifting?

I've crabbed in Bodega Bay a few times and it's always fun, but is there anything I can fish for while the crab pots soak? I'm taking my boat instead of kayaks, so I'll have a bit more range, but it's not big enough to take outside the bay. I'd like to just soak a line while we wait for the pots. Any suggestions? Not looking for anything to take home necessarily, but just something to have fun with and pass the time. In the past, I've tried fishing with squid hoping for rays or sharks, but no luck. That being said, I think we only fished for 30 minutes or so.

General Talk / Re: Ft. Baker boat launch?
« on: April 23, 2018, 10:13:28 PM »
Well, here's a report for anyone that's thinking about it in the future.

The ramp is narrow. It was tricky just having enough room to swing my trailer into the lane. Not terrible, but not the normal double wide ramp. There is no dock either, but there is a public access pier a couple hundred yards away. Next time we'll drive it off and motor over there. What they said about low tide was correct. I tried to get there before the low hit, but we were a little slow getting out of town and got there about an hour before the bottom (minus tide I think). I was off the ramp and into some small cobble. Not a big deal though. Fairly easy launch even at the low tide for my boat, but it stays shallow much longer than normal ramps. I just put the motor up all the way and used the trolling motor to get back to deep enough water.

Winds weren't bad when we launched and we breezed out under the bridge. We fished along the headlands just outside from the bridge. We stayed fairly close to shore and used 4 ounce jigs. It was okay. Not great. We caught about 8 undersized lings and a couple dink rock fish. We only picked up one keeper link. We were hoping for a butt in the sandy stretches where the coves are, but no such luck.

The winds came up mid day and we ran back around inside the bridge. We drifted anchovies for a bit, but no takers.

A fun day and a good learning experience. No way would I ever go out there unless conditions were ideal. The wind blew stronger than it was forecasted  today, cutting our day short, but no way was I hanging outside once the wind started. I've been out there enough to see just how quickly that north pillar current and wave mix can make it a frothing mess. We kept that in sight the whole time we fished, just to be safe.

Anyone launched a boat from here? I've put my kayaks in, but I'd like to bring my boat out. It's a 14' aluminum that is a breeze to launch, but just wondering what to expect if anyone has experience. They say to avoid a low tide, but other then that, I can't find ANY info about it. There is a couple days in the future that are looking food for the bay.

Thanks.

Best trip ever for me over Easter. We camped at Doran and brought my boat.

Put the pots in the water Saturday night. I only went about a half mile out and was in 40 fow. Had four pots out and wanted to test different baits. One had ling and cabezone heads/skin. One had all chicken legs. One had chicken legs and squid. The last one had two duck carcasses. I'd read mixed reviews about ducks but saved them from last season just to try them out.

Pulled them Sunday morning. Each pot had 10-15 crabs, but nearly ALL were females! A fairly even mix of dungies and rock crab. The best bait seemed to be the fish. I ended up with only two male keeper dungies.

Because of weather, I couldn't get out again until Monday evening. First trap (chicken) only had two small rock crabs. They got the bait box open and all the bait was gone, so who knows how long it had soaked with no bait. The second trap was loaded with dungies and more than half were male. This was the ducks. I had 7 or 8 keeper males in this trap alone. The next trap (chicken) also was stuffed. The last trap was the same. I was tossing 6" ers overboard left and right. I ended up with a limit, plus one enormous rock crab.

I was dumb to put my traps back where I'd caught all the females, but it never dawned on me until I was back on shore. That being said, I was lucky it worked out.

And between fish scraps and duck carcasses, I'm done buying bait for crab traps.

So yes....they are still around.

CA Regulations / Re: How Do I Catch a Trespasser on My Property?
« on: March 29, 2018, 08:59:33 PM »
Regarding the audio...I'm fairly certain someone has no reasonable expectation of privacy on YOUR land. I could be wrong, but the wiretapping laws are designed to keep people from secretly recording phone calls without someone's knowledge. If they are in a public place, or more importantly on YOUR land, they have no expectation of privacy and a game camera that includes audio is perfectly okay.

All good suggestions.

A big, clear, bold "NO TRESPASSING" sign right at the gate would be a good start.

A handful of well hidden game cameras that will get a vehicle/plate right at the gate would help find out who they are and give something for local law enforcement and/or DFG to follow up on.

You could also buy a cheap, fake surveillance camera and put it up for all to see. Add a sign that says, "Site under 24 hour surveillance."  Put it on a 10' pole so it's obvious. While it may get swiped someday, it will most likely turn most people away.

Fishing Pics / Re: Videos are cool
« on: March 06, 2018, 10:27:50 AM »
I've taken video and still images of my hunting and fishing trips for years. It's usually just a convenient way to summarize a trip's photos and videos in one, all inclusive package. I've used everything from phones, point and shoot cameras, DSLR's for photos and video, and Go Pros. I usually share them with family and friends, but more importantly, it's a moment in time that is saved.

Start with a simple, free video editing program. iMovie and Windows Movie Maker are both fine to learn with. There are thousands of tutorials on YouTube to do anything you want with any program you want.

If I had to start all over, I'd get a used GoPro or less expensive equivalent, and use the free editing program that most computers come with. Get a feel for what your style and workflow (processing the videos) will be, then let that direct you as you become proficient.

Here is a super simple video I made from just a day fishing with my kids. I used a series of super short GoPro clips with a handful of still images.

CA Regulations / Re: Can’t an Officer “Radio in” My License Info?
« on: February 19, 2018, 08:30:12 PM »
I think it's easier for this to be a requirement and put the burden on the fisherman of proving he has a license instead of DFG having to research it. Many places have spotty cellular service, spotty data service, and the state radios aren't all that fancy. While I don't have any first hand knowledge, I know enough about radios to assume they have some serious dead zones.

An updated data base of licensees isn't a bad idea....but paying a developer to make it secure enough for state law enforcement is another hurdle, and then you'd need to get them to sign off on it and incorporate it.

I think it's easier for them to make it the same as a driver's license requirement. Must have it in possession while driving. Pretty simple actually.

s. Such a good feeling catching a fish and cook them when you got home.

Welcome Alvin. I couldn't agree with this more in terms of ocean fishing!!!

I'm also a Farmer John fan. I have a dry suit that I may use more this year, but the Farmer John has worked well for me so far.

Another tip that I haven't seen yet is learning to watch the weather. Both on the water, and prior to any trip you may make. Wind, swell, and tide are all things that can be somewhat predictable with a little research, and can make a HUGE difference for time on open water.
