What a thrill ride today,
Got to hit the water early (for me that's 9am).
Started off trolling the moorings, then continued on to the bell. No luck and just a few short ling's. Decided to scoot up to bread and butter and see if the flatties were around. After about an hour inside, decided to move out to deeper water. Around 65 feet, there was a distinct rip going and the outside was a beautiful blue in contrast to the brown/green water on the inside. As I cross over to the blue water, I decide to drop down. All of a sudden, I hear what I can only discribe as the sound of a ski cutting the water. Turn to the right, 2 foot fin comes from the rear and away to the right at full speed. My Hart starts racing, a few seconds later same thing except on the right. Then it disappeared. I'm in "Oh S&#T" mode. I know what happens when they disappear, and I want no part of it. I make a quick turn to the left and kick the peddles as fast as I can. Out of nowhere, he makes a u-turn just to the right of my kayak. He just missed me, and as his tail kicks I can feel the wind and he throws a 10-15 foot wake over me. For a few minutes I knew I would not be here to post this. I'm sure I sounded like a scared kid when I called out on the radio, and was so glad just to hear a voice.
I've been scared by a great white a few months ago, but that time he was just cruzin and checking things out. This time, he was in full attack mode. I don't know why he turned away, but thank you Lord for watching over me today.
After the ordeal, I headed to shallower water and was content to fish for shaker halibut for a while.
Lesson learned ...... Always paddle in groups when off shore.
