Has anybody ever been to the Lost Coast? I have been meaning to do the backpacking trip but haven't done it yet. It's funny what getting married and having a baby will do to all your plans. I believe there are several campsites along the trail that should be accessible from the coast. I have no idea what the landings would be like though. It seems there might be some pretty untouched areas up there. No roads for quite some distance.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

I have been there. Also know people that have backpacked it. there's an
(in)famous surf spot up that way too, called big flat, takes a south swell, good in the summer on
swells from big southern hemisphere winter storms. but a nearby landing strip for private planes
and other private access ensures there's always a crowd.

Heard the nearshore shelter cove fishing is good.

I could imagine yakking up from shelter cove, towing the surfboard. hope whitey hits the board
not the yak,  :smt010.  No doubt it gets deep super quick since the mountains rise 3000 feet
right from the beach.

When I lived there one of the hikes was along the black sands beach to the mouth of the mattole river. I was living at a place called kaluna Rim equestrian camp ground. I don't know if that is there anymore. It was a great place to live. I lived right on the cliff over looking the beach and would fall a sleep every night to the sound of crashing waves. I know that it has changed alot since I lived there. The fisherman would launch the boats from the beach in the cove via a Tractor that was run by the Machi family. My wife worked down at the motel in the cove. So I would go down there when I wasn't working and AB dive or comb the tidepools for treasure's. The King range also has a vast chain of hiking trails. When I was there you had to be careful of wondering through the woods, not from wild life but from the seasonal "Agricultural workers" if you know what I mean. After all it is still Humboldt county. I know that you can drive your yak down to the beach in the cove and launch from the beach. I know that the fishing would be killer. There is so much history down in that area. It is really intresting. Let me know if you go and check it out. You can drive to the cove via garberville and redway. The cove is just a small part of the lost Coast though. I want to take my son on a road trip to the cove next year to show him one of the best places his mother and I have ever lived. mnt1095@netzero.com

I paddled from usal to Little Jackass Creek, then to Wheeler.  About 1.5 hrs to LJC and another .75 hours to Wheeler.  Wheeler's a better camp.  The fishing wasn't too good, but I did get dinner.  Awesome coast and really gnarly sea lions.  On the day i went, it took 1.5 hours to get to the same spot it took the hikers 6 -7 hours.

Quincy is in California. It is halfway between Chico and Reno, near Lake Davis where the CalDFG Northern Pike fiasco happined.

Thanks dave, been to that Quincey too. There is a Quincey up here in Washington on your way to Wenatchee. Big farming area. Not to far from the river.(upper Columbia)
