Title: striper rod
Post by: badog on May 31, 2008, 09:43:34 PM
I have a 4wt tfo professional for trout. I am wanting to get a striper rod and reel, probably an 8wt.   Anyone have a favorite striper rod and reel that they could suggest, for the rivers and delta? Also what type of line do you use for rivers or delta. Thanks for any help!!!!

My favorite striper rod is a high-end Scott S3S - it's built to cast LC13 head & it does that SO well! I bought it a few years ago with some unexpected bonus money, and have been very happy.

Prior to getting that rod, I used two TFO Pros - an 8 wt & 9 wt. Both good, but in my opinion too "slow" for good striper fishing - although I've caught a lot of stripers on both. I am looking at a new TFO set up: 9' 8 wt TiCrX, with a spey/switch conversion kit. Total cost of rod + kit = $400, which gets you both a solid fast action 9' 8 wt and an 11' spey/switch rod that I think would be terrific for fishing for stripers from a kayak.

If I decide to spring for it, I'll let you know how I  like it!

just add about 28-30 feet of t-11 to the rods Pindo recommended. Most major fly shop have bulk t-8, t-11 and t-14 for about .50 a foot, and put your own loop on the back, put a 18 inch - 30lb leader butt, with 4 feet of 12 - 15 lb flourocarbon for a leader. For backing I use 250 yards of 20lb Micron, with 200 feet of 20lb Amnesia, then the t-11 shooting head. It is good for 110+ feet, and sinks fast into the strike zone, plus you are casting 3/0 flies.

The deal of deals for saltwater quality flyreels is here http://www.sealevelflyfish.com/reels_AlbrightTackle.html , get the Albright #2. You can't beat the price.

By the way troutnut, I did buy one of those Albright reels and it looks awesome.  What a great tip, man.  Cant wait to use it to fling some flies at surf perch, striper, steelies.  Thanks for the lead.  If this fishes as well as it looks and feels in the hand, this is going to be a great deal.

I use Temple Folk Outfitter rods (TFO) they are medium priced and great value for the money. I carry two on my kayak or float tube: 9-weights for stripers (one with T-14 and the other with a WFT Bass Bug line with  a foam Gurgler in hopes of top water action). Used to use 7-weights but reserve those for Bass, Salmon, and Steelhead now--big Stripers took too long to bring in and I worried about mortality with C & R so I went to 9 weights. Be careful--those heavy Clousers can crack the graphite if they hit it on a cast. You won't see nay damage but pretty soon the rod will crack off on a cast. So don't spend a lot of money and expect to have to use the lifetime warranty a time or two.

I prefere the Sage Xi2 8wt and 10wt.  Some of those stripers you'll need some extra backbone.  I use a Waterworks ULA reels for both rods.  These reels have some stopping power!!!!  For the 8wt. I use the Striper line 350gr and 450gr. by Rio
