Title: Extra paddle needed
Post by: rshu on July 31, 2017, 10:43:06 AM
Hey guys! I'm looking for an extra paddle, something like the ones that come with your kayak stock, even if it's stuck as a one piece when it used to be a two piece. Looking to spend $50 or less, if you have one laying around collecting dust and you will be at Albion, hit me up! Thanks!

Roger

Walmart had these amazing kayak paddles.. 2 piece.. regular price less than $20.  Not the usual soft plastic stuff.  Worth a call over there or online search...

I recently bought a nice paddle for $20 at walmart after realizing I left mine at home like a noob.  Came with a measuring tape on it.  pretty sweet paddle.

Ive been wondering about these seen a few on craigslist around that price and thought dam those are expensive.   But now my curiosity getting the best of me are they really that much better and worth it?  So they are lighter and what faster?
Ps sorry on the hijack

I good, light paddle makes a big difference in my opinion. $200 is an average price for a decent paddle.. A lot of paddles approach $350-400. Material, blade shape, handle shape all make a difference. Whenever I use a cheap paddle for any reason I realize why I have some high dollar paddles now.

I have a 220cm Aqua Bound Tripper paddle that I am not using anymore. 2 piece fiberglass shaft. Would that work for you?

Our Werner is very light.  It ran in the +$400's when we bought it.  I may just end up using in on my OB if we can't sell it.

@Krusty,

P-Sherman is checking on an extra for me when he gets home this evening. If that doesn't work out I'd be interested. I'll let you know. Thanks!

Roger,  I'm pretty sure I have an extra paddle laying around.  It's a two piece with an aluminum shaft and it's yours if you want it.  I'll throw it in my van and you can pick it up at Albion.  I'm arriving Wednesday.  How many Uni bombs is a fair trade?  I just checked and it's a Bending Branches Whisper.

Back in the day when I paddled I had a Werner Camano.
I think I paid around $250, which was a lot for me at the time (still is).
Worth every penny!
Tough and light weight means it can take the abuse and your arms will not tire out at soon as they will with a heavier paddle.
Got rid of it when I got my Hobie. I see no real need to have it if I won't be using it.

Those likely aren't the droids you're looking for.

The two on the left look like they're river paddles (larger blades, shorter length). The Flite looks like it might be scooped for racing. Not sure about that one though. Regardless, start by determining the paddle length that best suits you, then see what's out there.

And yeah, the werners are shockingly spendy when you get to their higher end paddles, but worth it, IMO.

I think its best that you start a new thread with all of your info - height, type of kayak, model, width of kayak, paddling style (high angle or low angle).  all those are factors in choosing a paddle.  A good kayak shop will also be able to help you choose.
