Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Lefty Righty Baitcaster Poll
« on: August 26, 2006, 11:33:37 PM »
Rod stays in the right hand, everything else is done with the left. I cast and thumb the reel with my right, rele in with my left. Doesn't matter if I am spin fishing, baitcasting, or fly fishing, same hand position on all.

Never having been to Mendo I was wondering what is the preferred method for making bait there? I hope is isn't by credit card!

After I did mine I tested it by filling it with water and checking for leaks. It leaked badly in one spot. It was nothing a little extra goop didn't fix. I love this set up. It certainly paid to water test it before I took it out.

General Fishing Tips / Re: just bought a jig for Sunday's trip

Tote,

I think you will find that jig on the bottom will get more lings & cabbies because of the noise.  Torpedo and an bite wiil get the rockcod.  But, the only way you will get a ling or cabbie is by hanging a rockcod down there.

Ken kickfish

The only real way to find out would have to be by fishing side by side and see.

Dry season, fire permits may be suspended. I don't see it happening but it is worth a shot.

If you want cheap and effective get a shiney 4 oz. lead torpedo weight and run a 1/0 Gamagatsu 510 assist hook through the eye. Tie your leader to the same eye and you have a VERY effective jig for about $1.25. I think the prettiness of jigs are done more to catch the consumer, not the fish.
Things lose color at depth and there isn't a heck of a lot of light at 100 feet. Noise and motion are what jigs provide.
This set up looks ugly but works GREAT!

Kayaks / Re: Could I go wrong?

My girlfriend and I paddle a Prowler 13 and 15 respectively. Regularly we have ice chests in the tank well LOADED with beer and ice. The only noticible difference is launching. Sliding them into the water is difficult because of the uneven weight in the back. Once they are in the water, no problemo!

Fishing Pics / Re: Pics of old collectible fishing stuff.......

Just a guess but I bet his $2 fishing license didn't require him to have to display it. He probably didn't have to consult the fishing regs on a daily basis. The limit was probably as much as you could carry and the fishing was probably phenomenal. All that for $2 has to be one of the hot deals of the century in my book.

I have FOUR of the Crazy Creek Kayak III seats with the 1.5 inch foam padding. Got rid of all the other seats for all my kayaks as this seat rocks!!!!!

I considered myself a decent veteran ( 6 years ) before I saw the kayak fishing video. I learned a LOT from it.
Like I say in all my posts related to newbies, find a lake where you can practice EVERYTHING in about 4 feet of water. Fall out, turn the yak upside down. Flip it upright from every conceivable angle. The bow, stern and middle.
The prob with a pool is that you have to worry about smacking your head on the side while practicing. Most pools won't handle the length of a kayak and you falling out without getting too close to the sides.
No worries in a lake.
Practice paddling your yak without paddles too. You will definitely appreciate a paddle leash after you do.

Pat yourselves on the backs! First time out and you scored. Way to go!!!!!!!
