Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Drift Chute
« on: November 04, 2006, 09:07:21 AM »
When the wind picks up BIG time it will definitely let you keep fishing by slowing your drift. On Dennis Spike's Kayak Fishing video he shows a great technique for using a drift chute incorporating a bowline. I have done this and it really works great.

General Fishing Tips / Re: *BLING* floating gaff project
« on: November 04, 2006, 08:48:12 AM »
I made a gaff from a wooden dowel for that very reason; floatability. I needed a second gaff for CHUB on short notice and bought one that looks like it came from a section of a fishing pole. I was bummed as I knew it wouldn't float but I needed it in a pinch. I let CHUB use the wooden one so I couldn't get mad if it went overboard. Well I was the one who knocked the new one overboard and much to my surprise it floated like a champ!!!! Very lightweight and it floats. It was around the $10 range. I just wish I could remember where I bought it.
Like always Eric's craftsmanship shines above the rest!!!!

I drop mine enough at 65lbs. That is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Very impressive.

If you spend $$ on a rod and reel make sure you have them leashed. Especially when you are just starting out. You do not want to see those sink to the bottom.
I have heard rumor there are fish in Natomas. I personally have never seen or caught one there.

Screws with a little marine goop. For me rivets are always a last resort.

You guys see any abalone while snorkeling along the jetty??
That is one sweet trap Travis. Wish I had the extra $$ this month to score one of those. Looks like I will be luggin' the big metal rectangle that I already have.

I have seen dolphin a few times. And yes they scare the CR@P out of me until I identify them.
One time at Ocean Cove I had two come within 20 feet of me.

Nice job Travis. I should have followed you up!!!!!!

The tunnel goes from Buck Island Reservoir to Loon Lake. I also read where there is a hydro electric plant UNDER Loon Lake. Located 1,750 feet below the Earth's surface, lies a complete 70 megawatt facility. http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/loon_powerstation/
I would have had some pretty cool pics too if I didn't forget my camera..  :knob:

I am beginning to think the fishing reports section should be broken into two subsections. "Catching" reports and "Skunk" reports.
I might have a record for most waters seriously fished with the most skunks from these waters.
Today Loon Lake was no different for me than my last FIVE or so reports. Nada. Zip. Zero. Donut. Goose Egg.
Got there early. Lake was pancake flat. Fish rising, a few jumping.
Trolled a dodger and mepps tipped with worm from the dam to the end of the lake. No love.
Went all the way to the tunnel at the farthest end of the lake. The water was pretty low but still decided to paddle into the tunnel. Got about 100 yards or so into it when I finally bottomed out. Too shallow. Pretty awesome inside if ya like caves.
I did some research on the tunnel  ( http://hydrorelicensing.smud.org/project/smud06ne.pdf  ) and was amazed at how many diversion tunnels there are in that area. I think this is the only one ( that I know of ) where paddling into it is no prob.
Of course to add insult to injury ( no fish ) the wind kicked up BIG time as usual and never at my back. Paddling felt like I was running 5 mph on a 4.5 mph treadmill going the opposite direction. needless to say I was 'later than expected' getting home.
I might try a trout farm in Apple Hill to get the jinx off of me. Something like $4 a pound when you catch a fish but it might be worth it to remind me what it feels like.

Not for the lack of effort Al. Nice try.
I sent you a PM.
