What time Al??

Had to scratch plans to go to Anchor Bay because of the swell report so I decided to fish local and go to Union Valley.
Drove to the heliport to scope things out.
This is the peninsula area of Union Valley:

Union Valley dam area:

Ice House in the distance with Pyramid peak off to the left:

Lakes are LOW as you can see. Not a boat in sight. Lake was like glass.
Drove to the peninsula and launched from the boat ramp around 1pm.
I was trolling a dodger with a Mepps trailing and throwing a Kastmaster to rises with no luck. It was very frustrating as I was marking fish everywhere and in all depths.

This spot consistently showed the fish stacked up. No matter what I did I couldn't get a hit. I tried dropping a worm in the middle of them too. Nada!

I switched to a 2'' Floating Rainbow Trout Rapala and within 3 minutes I had my 1st hook-up. A nice 14'' rainbow.

Two minutes later another hook-up but I lost it at the boat..no net. :smt011 :smt013

Things got quiet so I added a sliding sinker and a dodger and got hit right away with a dink. I am thinking this is a Kokanee. Correct me if I am wrong:

Ended the day with 7 hits. One lost at hook-up, one lost at the boat. One released and kept four.
The fish got consistantly smaller as the day went on. 14'', 12'', 11 1/4'' and 10 1/2''.
Looks like the skunk is finally off of me.
I never saw another person on the lake all day. It was awesome.
My final haul:

Researcher~
How tall are you and how much do you weigh?

Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done! You may have just saved someones life.
Very informative.
I think if my kayak got swamped from a wave then conditions would be less than favorable. There would be considerably more fatigue involved in rough seas too.
Personally, if the seas were really rough I would dump all my gear except for what I needed to get to safety; seat and paddle.
The rescuer needs to be really careful about not smashing fingers between the kayaks too. When your kayak is bouncing around and you are trying to pull another kayak on board it can happen pretty easily. The last thing you need is to hurt your hand so you cannot paddle back to safety.
Once again..GREAT ARTICLE AND PHOTOS!!!!
I hope everyone practices this at least one time. I would sure rather paddle with someone who has.

If balsa wood was better don't ya think all the manufacturers would be doing it????
You have to define what " better" is and go from there. I think wood kayaks are beautiful and I love the craftsmanship that goes into one. I would someday like to build one myself. Do I think is it better than a plastice boat? No. I think plastic is better because there is less maintanance involved, it is lighter, and can take more of a beating. Just my .02 worth.

Nice try Al. You are due.
Did you try just below the Guy West Bridge? Log hole is just downstream from there on the right. Used to be a nice holding spot.

Hard to say anything about a 1st production model until it has been tested.
I looked at the kayak on the internet and there were a few things I didn't like. I do not like the rubber hatches. Never have, never will. I didn't like the fact that I cannot see the hull of the boat on any of the ads. How is the secondary stability?
I didn't like the rear handle attached starboard to port instead of bow to stern. Seems it would make for some awkward carrying.
At 31'' wide it seems it would be a bit sluggish to paddle.
I did like the layout of the deck.
I would like to hear from someone who had paddled this kayak.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Drift Chute
« on: November 04, 2006, 03:02:15 PM »
A drift chute will do no good in the current. It works by creating drag in the water because your kayak is moving faster than the water. If it is moving at the same pace then it is pointless to use the chute.
