Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Crabbing Bodega Report
« on: November 04, 2018, 03:27:25 PM »
This season is looking good. Got my limit + early. They were a lot of jumbos. Got to Doran around 5:30 and paddled out in the pitch black of the night. Dropped one pot on the protected side of the jetty trying to keep away from the other pots, but I couldn't see much even with my dive light. The other three pots I dropped on the outer side of the jetty. Headed out to check my pots before the poachers could check for me, when there was just enough light to see. Inside the jetty had nothing but a bunch of rock crab. The outter pots produced 7 keeper dungies. Stupid me, I let one of the large ones climb out of my bag and go back down. I dropped two more pots and set the pots back. The second check, half hour later produce only two more, and of course a bunch of rock. I did also get three that were just a little bigger than legal, so I dropped them back down in hopes of getting some that were bigger. Moved the pots around and started bringing pots back in and dropped a few back near the beach just to store. Went out to check my pots the three that I dropped were no longer in the pot. Poached or got out?
Looking for just two more on my last check picked up 5 on the pots I dropped near shore and 4 more on the outer pots. Wished I had a partner to keep all the crab, but 10 is still a lot.
The craw was on the outside the jetty in the morning and they started crawling inside after the high slack tide. The crabs were good quality, and more plentiful than last year. I was done by noon. The weather was great and there was no real wind to deal with. The swells were low, but the boat traffic in and out of the jetty was crazy. The boats were flying in and out at high speeds. Other then the boat traffic the day was perfect. Looks like it's going to be a good crab season. Good luck to all and be safe.

Have not been crabbing for a while now because I hadn't had time and the crabbing at Doran was pretty slow the last few times I went. Anyone having any luck? Just asking.

General Talk / Pan fishing area for kids.
« on: February 05, 2017, 10:24:28 PM »
Looking for an lake to take my kids, 8 & 10, fishing for crappie or blue gills. Marin or Sonoma County preferred. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I have taken them to the pier at Fort Baker when the smelt are hitting, but I want to take them out on a kayak and fish.

General Talk / Found fishing pole, reel and net at Doran Beach.
« on: December 05, 2016, 08:08:46 PM »
Went crabbing Sunday at Doran and found a nice pole, reel and net in the surf.
Let me know if you lost it so I can get it back to you. If not, I'll put it to good use, because it's better then anything I own. The reel is dead, but the pole is still good.
Identify it to claim it.

Decided to give it a try since I was down here for thanksgiving. I have not seen any kayakers crabbing and was told that it's too far to get out to where the crabs are.  They were right.
Paddled out a mile and a half from Monterey Bay Kayak to the Red Buoy and dropped two pots outside the buoy in about 150 feet of water.  Would like to have soaked for longer but my niece got sea sick and headed back in so the pots got a hour and half hour. Pulling a weighted pot from 150 ft was a lot of work for an empty pot.
Will probably never do this from a kayak again. Would like to get out on a boat.

Wanted To Buy / WTB: Trident 13
« on: September 25, 2016, 01:38:23 PM »
Looking to get an Ocean Trident 13. I've grown out of my 10ft Emotion Stealth Angler. Mission control, AKA the wife, gave me the OK after selling enough other gear to purchase one. If you have any leads please let me know.

Would love to dive tomorrow but might end up pole fishing if I can't find a dive partner or if the visibility is really bad.
Comfortable freediving and spearfishing, but an a novice at pole fishing in the ocean. If you are out at SWS tomorrow I'll be on channel 69(moon). Love to meet new people and learn to pole fish.

Introductions / Another new member
« on: May 12, 2015, 07:02:36 PM »
A quick hello, my name is Moon, and I am pretty new to kayaking in general. I've retired from racing bicycles and pick up kayak angling and freediving up.
I started by crabbing from my kayak and now look forward to fishing and diving from my kayak as well. I love learning new things to improve how to do it better and am always willing to get pointers and advice.
Look forward to getting out and meeting new folks.
