Let us know how it works, i need a decent one for my kayak and zodiac and this might be the solution.

In what circumstances do you prefer to dive from a dive float, and in what circumstances do you prefer to dive from a kayak?

I was fully trying to understand the ranger suit! haha. I take it you were on scuba based on the fins?

I only kayak when I know I'm going somewhere beyond where I'd feel like swimming to. Not to mention, most of the northern coastal spearfishing honey holes are near cliffs which means launching a kayak is near impossible. I've lowered my kayak down 15 foot cliffs before and roped it back up =P Not fun.
Nope, just snorkeling.  I went out today and whacked six pike.

I can see how a cliff launch would be easier with a dive float than with a kayak!

Access, Access, Access  :smt003
Kayak will get you into more remote places with minimal work,
Shoredive locations are usualy difficult to get to or overwhelmed by other divers.

Since abalone closed i dont even use a board anymore, i just clip the fish into my weighbelt and gun.

The only sketchy thing about that is what happened to us last weekend. 3 huge sealions were buzzing us trying to steal the fish off our belts. Seals try too but more playfully and are more timid. Sealions are like "hey, I want those, Im going to come get them now...and maybe dislocate your arm in the process" haha. So we like to have a dive bag to throw them in on a float/kayak somewhere. It's super sketchy having a giant beast coming in hot =P
I get harrased by seal lions at most shoredive locations, the key to scaring them off it to get underneath them and swim up at them  and push them or give em a quick poke.

No kidding?? I always heard that poking them agitates them.
Only if your face to face, if your underneath them they feel vulnerable.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Suit and gun guidance
« on: April 30, 2018, 08:32:15 AM »
Appreciate the advice, a class would be great if it wasn't super expensive. Unfortunately their calendar doesn't show any dates the rest of the year in northern ca

You guys ever do group dives or go out w learners?
Post on the Norcal Underwater Hunters forum. Most of them are on here but its dedicated to diving the area.  You can usualy find some dive buddies on there if the ocean is flat.
Swing by red triangle, he has the cheepest prices around and id highly recomend getting a pathos or rob allen. You can find those guns for cheep if you get one on sale.  I use pathos  82 but most guys use 60-82cm.  The one thing ive learned is never buy those plastic spearguns because they will always break at the worse time
The subcraft suits he sells are dirt cheep and decent for a bigginer. Yazbecks will be much more comfortable after a 5 or 6 hour day but that subcraft will be a lot more durable.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Wheeleez mini?
« on: April 13, 2018, 11:59:37 AM »
Anyone used the mini before? Jackson is sending me the new Coosa Fd. 115 pounds is going to require some wheels for sure.

But I'm cheap. The mini cart is rated for the weight, and is $100 cheaper.

Anyone use it and happy with it for heavier boats? Or is the extra $100 well worth it?
I  got the blue kayak cart off amazon. It is was like 120 bucks and appears to be equally or possiblly more durable than wheeleze for the 3 times ive used it. I sat on my kayak when it was on the wheels and it held fine so i assume it will handle a small barge.

Or buy a zodiac with beach wheels because its equaly as heavy as that bastered. Hahaha good luck with that bastered when you dive big sur.

she has been always a little rude in the past but im very good at keeping my mouth shut so i just do as asked to and keep a low profile.   I have pretty thick skin for being yelled at and rarely talk back but she pushed my buttons pretty damn hard. The guy has been  always friendly to us was a little  unhappy that morning but perfectly fine, probably just swammped by campers.
She came out and instantly was upset with us at 7 am. Sort of demanding money in a really rude way, we paid and didnt say much and she told us to park up by the register and we asked if it was possible to unload down there if we are quiet. ( no time limit mentioned)  fred said no problem just be quiet and we thanked them both. Then we unloaded quietly  ( wispered and didnt slam anything within 10 minutes) wheeled my kayak down and adam was just about to bring his so i walked up to see gio and saw his girlfriend and was gunna tell him to check out the breakers, she met me half way told me "you better move now or leave, i dont have time to deal with you,  your wasting my time hurry up now," and was nearly yelling,  I said "ok we will move as fast as posssible,  sorry i was just trying to be quiet" . And i turned around and went back to the kayaks and helped Adam finish up his  stuff and she stood there and watched us unload as fast as possible.  Then we parked the truck where they said to and basicaly gio described the rest accurately word for word.
Afterwords me and Adam just tried to get to the water as fast as posssible and get away from the whole situation.

Ive launched in bad places and am pretty expirienced with bad conditions,  but i had a breaker curl on me and throw me over my seat and inside my tankwell on my trident 4.3.   Luckily i calmly let it take me back onto the beach and kept a hand on the handle so i didnt get hit with the back of my kayak in the face, but new  kayaker could have easily panicked under the whitewater and got hit in the head or face.
It was better off for gio to head north than to have his girlfriend never want to sit on kayak again.

Could have used a little bit of a quieter morning though

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: New Dive Video
« on: January 12, 2018, 07:53:37 AM »
Wow that's incredible, the colors are really vivid and the water looks super clear. Never really wanted to spearfish before but half way through the video I started to reconsider.

Was also wondering how many days of diving it took to make this until the surprise stringer at the end.

Thanks!
That whole video was one weekend.  I used to purely hook and line until i relized when conditions are ideal the speargun is far more effective.  Its a lot more work but its a lot more rewarding and as you get better you will become super picky with what you take because you see so many fish.  Theres a steep learning curve but once you get into it, its a lot more fun than sitting and waiting for a bite.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / New Dive Video

Been working on this video for a while and pretty happy with the outcome. I was able to modify my autocad computer to be able to handle a HD video editor. Everything was shot with a go pro hero 6 and my phantom 3 pro drone.

I recomend the pathos a lot over the RA, but its mostly personal preference , go to a dive shop and see what you like more in person

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Sheep, Copper, and Verm - Epic Day!
« on: December 06, 2017, 12:36:51 PM »
The 15 specie thing is still hard for me to get, the 4 hour drive south vs the 40 minute drive  north  makes me really unmotivated to go south and basically only  have the chance to find a sheep.  Gas isnt very cheep for my pickup.
I don't get why you think you need to drive south for a sheep...I bet you could have shot a butt and striper up there this summer if you put in the time...
Ling, Cab, Ab, Scallop, Black, Blue, Olive, Grassy, Kelpy, Copper, Monkey, Butt, Striper, Verm, Perch....use the perch for crab bait if you don't like eating them.
But, guys who live south of the GG drive up North to get abs...so...yeah.
Whatever, I'll let whoever takes over DOTY do whatever they want with the rules next year and into the future.

@BigJim You forgot about Gopher/B&Y/China in your list for fish to shoot up north. So really only necessary for Sonoma/Mendo divers to get EITHER a butt or a striper if the drive to Monterey is too far/too expensive.

@ryang85 I really think the geographic limitations go both ways. Based on my limited experience, I've noticed the following:
The only two species that are definitely limited geographically between Monterey and Sonoma/Mendo (in my experience) are sheephead and abalone. Sheephead are more common in Monterey, even though they are not common by any means, and are rare north of there. To balance this out, abs are only available to the north.

Then there are some species that are more common/easier to get depending on where you are:
Olives are available in Monterey and Sonoma but easier to get in Monterey. But again, to even that out, scallops in my experience are much easier to find in Mendocino/Sonoma than Monterey. I've limited on scallops in Mendo but never found more than one on a given Monterey dive. Also black rockfish and greenling are more common/bigger up north in my experience.

So basically, there are advantages to living in both areas. If the ab fishery gets closed next year, things may need to be reevaluated/tweaked, but hopefully that doesn't happen.
The main issue is my halibut/striper/wsb spots are too far for my to paddle a kayak especially in a current. And i struck out on the bar this year for flatties so i need a sheep ( i also want to shoot one since ive never seen one before).

I understand the need for the compition to be challenging, im pretty comfortable in marin, sonoma and mendo with big scallops, abs, blacks and lings,  but ive gone down to Monterey mulitple times and strugled terribly. Diving different spots and found nothing at all. As someome who primarily shoots fish for meat, its always been difficult for me to head south when i know i can pile  up all  fish i want to eat for the week without the travel. But if we reduced the species it would be only based on basicaly size and that gives the compition a different mind set than the idea of having a variety.  I think 15 species is perfect,  i just am super picky with what i eat so i except shooting a 150 point perch and greenling and search for a big ling or scallops.
I just need to get some motivation to head south and shoot a sheep and copper. Im 3 fish away and there are lots of  16 to 17 " olives up here i just need to shoot one and stop looking for a trophy.

I just had a brilliant idea- add mola mola to the doty list and you'll crush it!!
(Just have to find someone to eat it!!)

Haha I dont think I could bring myself to shoot one of those  :smt005
I would have had a 100 pounder hanging off my kayak if was on the DOTY list, hahaha it was difficult for me to shoot a greenling and a perch let a alone a mola, they all taste like garbage compared to a fat ling or big scallop.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Crab bait - Rockfish carcass
« on: November 02, 2017, 05:43:20 PM »
I was told not to put the heads of rock fish in the traps as they are predators to the crabs.  So I tried a Cabezon head and got zero crabs so there might be some truth to it.

Now I just grind up fish minus the head and tail as those get stuck in the grinder anyways.  Makes for an oily slick which seems to attract them quicker.  I usually donÂ’t leave pots overnight as this works best for shorter soaks.
Anything but cabs work,
tuna heads work best but ling caracasses and rockfish get the job done.
