I haven't seen this posted here and it seemed worth sharing. On Saturday a Coastside member saw the harbor patrol bring in a kayak that had swamped and almost sunk. The kayaker reported that a sea lion had circled, bumped, then jumped and slammed into them, causing the near-sinking. So keep an eye out for sea lions.

Unrelated to the sea lion, it looks like the kayak had a bass-boat-style trolling motor (and presumably a heavy battery). Maybe not such a great idea in the ocean. Be sure you have lots of secondary flotation and carry a hand pump.

Good news is the kayaker had others nearby to assist and was able to call for help.

Thanks KPD for sharing. It's always good to test out your bilge pump to make sure it's working properly also.

Was it a sit in? I assume it was unless he was keeping his hatch open. I wouldn’t take a sit in on the ocean with or without a motor, much less with a heavy deep cycle battery.  :shark

No, the photos showed a tan Wilderness SOT. Not sure if the kayaker had a hatch open or how it got flooded.

Maybe the sea lion damaged the hull.

Seals/Sealions usually don't jump on kayaks for no reason. Once I had to fend off a sealion from boarding my kayak, just to see, minutes later his buddy getting rag-dolled by orcas 50 yards away...just sayin'

I was in HMB Sunday. Did not see a sea lion all day. No salmon either.

F!!!! Sea Lions!!!!

+1

Just last week, I had a sealion pacing me, and it made several loud thudding splashes. It scared the crap out of me the first couple of times.

The guy I dragged in to Muir a few years back was on a sot I think an ok w a small motor and battery, possibly had a leak not properly repaired by a shop he took it to

That one sank stunningly fast

Last year I was trolling for salmon, it was slow and I was desperate to get a bite.
I chased bait to the dux reef in 35' of water, this reef usually break however that was a calm day.
An elephant seal popped up and got a big nice salmon in its mouth. I was nearby and saw the salmon float on top, I went there quickly and as soon as I was ready to scoop it with my net, it resurfaced with wide open mouth. Its mouth could swallow me alive. After that I kept a good distant. lol

BTW, I was on my fully rig AI.
