Title: Colorado River Yuma AZ
Post by: myyak8me on March 24, 2018, 05:22:04 PM
Not sure where this post should go.  Be happy to move it if there is a better spot.   Been coming here in the winter to warm my bones.  It was 82 degrees when I got our the water the other day. It’s nice to fish in shorts!

It’s usually windy in the desert but you learn to adjust.  The bass seem to be moving into spawning mode right now -which sucks because I have to leave in few days.

I see very few kayak anglers here.  The Colorado River backwaters formed by the Imperial dam are beautiful. You can launch from places like Squaw Lake, Hidden Shores, and Martinez Lake.  These places are called lakes but they are backwaters of the river.  If you google earth the Imperial Dam you’ll get an idea of what it is.  All the backwaters on either side of the river can be fished with an AZ or CA license.

Yuma is loaded with RV parks or you can rent lots for your RV.  If you just come to fish wait until late Feb or March.  If you are willing to have some tough fishing but want to kayak, play in the desert, and be warmer than home - anytime in the winter will work.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180325/8181c4f0111a4a0518828b3545ae9450.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180325/ea6c425e28fd73ec53a53af914e74c49.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180325/33bf6bd916c3ec212362b3537589df23.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180325/83493db0073b4bc7e5a85154497e4cfd.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180325/ea6c425e28fd73ec53a53af914e74c49.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180325/ea6c425e28fd73ec53a53af914e74c49.jpg)

I fished there in the 80s while i was stationed at Yuma. We caught very large flathead catfish from shore. Are they still catching big cats?

Yes, I’ve seen some large ones caught in the canals. And I hooked up a large one on a senko that broke off.  I got one glimpse of it and boom... gone.
