In of course. Oysters on Friday night will happen again, I'll make a thread as time comes closer. Looking to source kumos and pacifics this year.

I'm in site 7 again and ready to host there if you want. Great time last year! WOOT!!
Well this was easy, I never made it past the first page. I haven't bought a kayak yet, (Wednesday hopeful), have never fished off of a kayak, have only been on a sot kayak in the ocean once, no wetsuit yet, limited gear for salt, have never participated in a past Gimme Shelter event and don't have a sponsor.
I got to start somewhere

you better get started by going to crabfest, you have to meet some of the people first.
The raffle benefiting club charities will be held again, and I should have 3 new kayaks in that raffle. Each tournament participant gets an entry toward each kayak. If someone wins more than one kayak they must give it away on the spot. Also, if someone wins a kayak in the raffle and wishes to give it away they get a free guided trip. We want to see the new kayaks go to people who will use them. I'm stoked to announce that Big Jim Russell has agreed to run the raffle for me again, and proceeds will be awarded to PIF and another club charity to be announced right after the raffle.
I'm especially looking forward to working KayakJacks Taco Shack!!!
Or enter a tournament I'm not able to score in
Just reserved my campsite. Same site as last time. Headin down Thursfay this time! Wish I could stay longer! Hopefully salmon season will open! Are they reserving tent sites or only RV sites?
My site is an rv site. Think the tent camping is like group camp, 25 per person. Not 100% tho...Just reserved my campsite. Same site as last time. Headin down Thursfay this time! Wish I could stay longer! Hopefully salmon season will open! Are they reserving tent sites or only RV sites?
Thanks for the quick reply, and kind offer. Not upset either way, and appreciate the clarifying. The prizes have never been a concern for me, my prize has always been the time with friends and family ...
And of course, the shirt ...
Except that ugly orange and black one ;0)
Question regarding Rule #8Eric,
Does this mean only video is accepted for lingcod?
I would prefer to release, and do not care about C&R Bonus.
Will a picture be acceptable?
Not buying a new camera just for a C&R Bonus.
Here's my understanding,
As its stated, i can either bring in (kill) fish im not wanting to have,
Or buy a camera I don't think ill use.
Or enter a tournament I'm not able to score in
I will be volunteering on Filleting for the taco shack.- Darius
I will be there all hell breaks loose. Vacation is approved!QuoteI will be volunteering on Filleting for the taco shack.- Darius
This is in writing, I expect to see you there. Last year I did part of it and Snapperhead did the majority.

100 days to register. :smt001the pics are so calm in that pic. didn't look like the day before tourny day last year :smt044
My 12 year old and I are interested in doing this event. We would love to team up with someone that is bringing their kids or who just wants to hang with us.
Eric, any concerns with us being out? We have been at Anchor Bay a few times as well as SWS and Monterey...

As far as shirt colors, how about silver in black? Something special for GS X.
How bout a super stelth shirt with black on black,
Or at least black on dark grey, could be cool

Quinn - Glad to hear you're coming and bringing family! Shelter Cove is a great place to get kids on the water. If it's rough like last year it may be an issue, but that was an exception - it's not called "Shelter" Cove for nothing! Great fishing close to launch and generally out of the prevailing wind. We're hoping for a strong youth turnout - looking forward to meeting you guys. :smt001
Duuuuuude, this is the 10th, that is a big deal. Lets step it up a notch and add something new. How about hats? It is something we can wear on the water.i like that idea!!
It should be hoodies made with glue and glitter!!!! :smt003
Any chance of doing zip up hoodies instead of pullovers this year?
The hoodie has the NCKA logo on the front, so a zipper would bisect it.I would be down too for a zipper hoodie. Can you put a tiny Ncka logo on either the right or left chest area?
I'm not planning to go that route, but I'm open to input. Please keep brainstorming and offering input on this.
Can't believe it will be seven years since my first visit to the cove. Thank you Eric Stockwell for such a great event and introducing so many friends to this magical place. GS and Shelter Cove has had such an impact on my wife and myself, that it is now our home.
Now I only wish I would have learned about it sooner ( missing the first 3 of the collection)
See ya soon,

you may want to think of an alternative in case black on black does not work.
I'm down for a pullover hoodie, even if I can't make it. :smt001Dude, I will give you one! Because I think I have 5 hoodies & 8 shirts..?
I'll look into hats.Would this be a beanie? I need a good new beanie. My current one is older than my wife.

Outstanding.
You somehow faded out or photoshopped the awesome orange and black one. Kudos. Did not go unnoticed.
I know it isn't possible to please everyone but I would much prefer a more traditional cap than a flat brim. When I think flat brim, I think of Colin Kapernick on the sidelines or people wearing hats sideways. I know I'm sounding like a curmudgeon but that's my 2 cents. No sideways hats or saggin' for me.

I'm in this camp. As my avatar shows; I roll my cap bill. I'm likely to buy several caps of this type as I go through that many a year.
I have hats on the order form now - it's a ballcap. Maybe flat brimmed - not sure yet.
Can't wait Eric! Thanks for all your hard work and for always inspiring me to be a better human being! I'm especially looking forward to working KayakJacks Taco Shack!!!Right-on Annie, we are stoked to have your help.
Taking advantage of your thread for one promotional Gyutaku post Eric :)Awesome Brandi, this event is truly a highlight of GS, and has tremendous value! I will have a lot going on but I'd like to pledge 90 minutes of my time and/or $25.
Information for the 5th Annual Gimme Shelter Gyutaku event coming soon in a separate thread!!
ALWAYS looking for volunteers to help out with this fun event. Send me a PM or email me (thegwtc@yahoo.com) if you are interested in being part of Team Gyutaku.
Thanks, Brandi
Great shirt lineup, Eric! You didn't miss the first three - we didn't start doing shirts until GS3. I may be able to hook you up with one to fill out your collection - I'll have to check stock. :smt001don't forget the one FM1 had done....was the #2? some even had the vato airbrush thing going. I still have mine so not hatin...just sayin
I'm glad to have your display here for everyone to see. As it relates to discussion a page or two back on this thread, I want to clarify why I do not seek the talents of artists and graphic designers like my good friend Tony/Novofish or others.
I like simplicity! I am very fond of the consistency of design over the span of years from early in the tournament series until now. I do not plan to alter my M.O. of using the "yakker image" on the back or the NCKA logo on the front.
I do appreciate input, and I really just want people to know why I do what I do. Thanks for the understanding and support. :smt001

I've decided to just keep the paid roster updated on the first post.
23 so far.
My Dad's been gone for more than 8 years now. I miss him, but I also carry him with me always.
He had me salmon fishing as a kid outside of Humboldt Bay where I thought we were going to die in the swells! He was also the first one to take me to Shelter Cove, and he and I shared some special times there like salmon fishing off of my kayaks in '06 when he got three fish in less than an hour.
My Dad taught me everything about salmon fishing, and I've really enjoyed showing those who've been my guests. There's something about the hooking of an anchovy - something you never think about when you do it as you have been for many years (since childhood...). When you start to break that down and show it to someone else, it becomes apparent that your fingers and hands know much more than your mouth, regarding how to do the hooking!
I think of my Dad and the things he taught me about salmon fishing and about life - very often. :smt001
Whenever I bust out my original Team Mooch jersey with your dad's name on the back (along with Mooch, Porky's dad, and my buddy Robert Okumoto) I feel honored to take him along for the run with me.
Thanks for sharing Eric.
:smt008
Sincerely,
Jim

Hey y'all. I'm planning on coming to Gimme Shelter, but I need a sponsor...
Anyone want to sponsor little ol' me?
I hope to fish with some of you before then to prove myself worthy, but I'd like to register sooner rather than later.
I'm glad you're planning to join us for a great long weekend in paradise, Paul. :smt001
You dive and have family down here in Monterey County right? You can't be all bad. :smt002
Qualifying statement: None of those abs were easy to get, and, ultimately, the length of the ab is secondary to the adventure that's tied to it. I've pulled many abs, trophies or not, where the experience meant way more than the length of the shell I was taking home.
:smt001
I am diving up there this year no matter what. I keep saying that and get talked into fishing all day every fricken year.
Won't be too dark if I get my new flashlight soon. Warranty return waiting on the new one.
Here's a few pics and two vids...the first one was the best diving conditions I've ever had up there...second one was the worst. :smt005
Is this the same spot as the GS8 hike and dive?
Which day for the hike and dive? Wednesday is a little better for the timing of the low tide but its getting pretty far off the date of the event and I'm not sure how many people are going to still be around. Monday would be good if it wasn't for the ridiculous 8am start time.
I'm still planning a shuttle hike - moonlight Saddle Mountain TH down Buck Creek trail then down the beach to Gitchell to meet the folks that hike up from black sands. 3000+ft elevation loss from the TH to the beach over ~4.5 miles by moonlight to the dawn. Oh yeah.
I'm planning a GS8 repeat on Monday.
With all due respect I have something to say about GS rules to attend. I have been biting my tongue for a couple years about this event that I would like to attend. I understand you have a rule that in order to attend you either must have attended a GS in the past or get a sponsor from someone who has. I think you established this rule because some people were just coming up for the grand prize and not contributing to the potluck and family atmosphere. I get it. But if the grand prize is no longer a big draw, than maybe too is the problem that used to exist.
If this event is not open to all why post it on here for all to see?
Anybody want to sponsor me? I promise to bring something for the potluck.
the rule is in place for someone to vouch that you aren't an asshole
Dray - Thank you so much for that perspective! I didn't realize that I may be alienating people with the rule.
Doug - Thank you for your explanation.
Basically, the sponsorship rule is as Antonio summarized it and Dustin added to it.
It's not hard to get sponsored, and since we've had the sponsorship rule we have not had any problems. It's a good rule. :smt001
All are welcome.
And, more importantly, it is to vouch that you at least know what you are doing on the salt.
Nick and I need a sponsor :smt006 :smt003
And, more importantly, it is to vouch that you at least know what you are doing on the salt.
That was totally my understanding. While fishing at GSX would be awesome, my lack of equipment and experience in the salt will keep me on dry land. With that said I'm still looking forward to the event pending unforeseen issues with work deadlines (construction)

You need to start somewhere. Try to get out before the deadline to enter with someone at the Central area when it opens April 2. Let them help you a bit and maybe they will sponsor you. It may end up no one goes out tourney day due to conditions also. Make sure you have all the safety gear too. That will help impress your sponsor.

Hi all,Tell me some of the guys you fish with on the central coast. If I know them and they will vouch I will sponsor you.
Looking for a sponsor for the GSX. It's been on my bucket list to fish the cove since I started kayak fishing 15+ years ago. I will be traveling up from ventura on Thursday .. A short 8 hr drive. Good news is that I don't bite and retired my rowdy side 2 decades ago. Perhaps we can meet up on Thursday pm for a cold one...
Thanks

I just want to say thanks Jim for sponsoring me a couple of years ago. it has opened so many doors for me both diving an fishing.

I grew up down there and my company had season tickets to the Dodgers. I went all the time. If he likes the Dodgers he is gold!
Been awhile since I've gotten my kayak wet because of work, but I talked with the boss yesterday and got approved for Thursday to Monday. Check and registration will be in the mail later today. 2 months to go....can't wait.
Do any of you guys have RV sites 5 6 8 or 9 on Friday night? The oyster feed will be at ski pro jerry's site 7 along the road near th gazebo like last year. I'm thinking that the stretch there would be a good high traffic spot for a gear swap at that time, immediately following the safety gathering. Are you taking oyster orders like last year? I can be sure to bring more dipping sauce. :smt007
The gear swap has previously been held in the NW corner and has t been well attended. If there is interest and space, we could probably do well to have it in that location.
Thoughts?

FI wanted to do a cracking up emoji there, but since getting Windows 10 (involuntarily) I can't do emojis...You can uninstall and return to the previous OS within, I believe, 90 days. I will not use Windows 10 until both of my Win 7 machines crap out.
Fektavious?!! Wow... Welcome back, buddy. :smt001
So I haven't been updating the roster with a new post this year. I'm updating it by modifying the first post in the thread. It's making for a very quiet GS thread! :smt001 - I wanted to do a cracking up emoji there, but since getting Windows 10 (involuntarily) I can't do emojis...
Anyway, I haven't been promoting GS this year, and I do have a goal of shrinking the event down to just those who know about it or who have heard about it and want to be part of the vibe.
Better chance at a couple kayaks for whoever does show. (cracking up emoji again)
:smt001
OK add one more, my check is in the mail. Wife will probably come up this year. No diving for me, but sailing my new Ai is a definite.

Do you have an example pic or link of what black on black tshirts / hoodies will look like?

That's the first thing that I did before asking and didn't see anything that resembled what you described.
Please provide a link thanks.
You can't unring a bell. How about setting a limit, past participant priority by invite, open spots by lottery (still need a sponsor) and maybe auction off a spot or two, profit donated to a worthy cause?
it will look like this, almost exactly.
I took the salmon guide trip last year and it was worth it, the salmon did not cooperate but I learned a lot and I will put it to use this year.
Luis
Registration is in the mail! Time for some Amayesing fishing!!!!+1. Watch out fish, the aMayesing Bros are coming!

Normally I don't do weddings and funerals...heck I am not even going to my own funeral.

Grrrrrrrrr!!! Can't make it this year!!

Based upon your demeanor and generosity at Crabfest I would be happy to work with you and can't think of any piece of equipment I wouldn't be able to provide depending on your comfort and interest.
That's a very generous offer, thank you. I'll take you up on that, but I have to get some seat time. Ordering a plb today and swinging by a local dive shop tomorrow for a farmer john.
I'll deal with the paperwork this evening.
What page is the pics with clothing for event on?

You mean past years? There's no pic of this year's - I do the design when I make the order.
I'll say this - it'll be bold and simple in order to make the black on black work. NCKA "Linghead Vector" on the front as always, and at least the "Yakker Image" on the back - maybe minimal lettering like just "GSX"... The hats - Yakker Image with GSX. That's what I'm feeling. Just a quick heads up for those who will be bringing pets and also for campers. This year the cove has noticed more than its share of ticks. If you are bringing your pet, don't forget to include tick medicine. Mine use the monthly chewable (nexgard) and it has worked well. I would suggest ,if not already, that your pets have some medicine for ticks in their system ahead of time for best protection. Also, campers may want to look into a good spray just to be safe.
Looking forward to seeing you all (and your four legged friends) in May.

I want to participate in this event, I need a sponsor for myself and my buddy Brett.
we both have years of paddle experience and have we are both certified divers with international down time.
I have a ok prowler big game, he has a Old Town Predator.
my equipment is a Icon 73 VHF, and sonar gps.
we both live 15 minutes from Pyramid lake home to the world class Lahontan Cutthroat trout.
I've been trolling lures 2-3 days a week some weeks everyday. when you have 20-50 hookups in a day well I need say no more about that addiction.
I lived in Fortuna for 32 years b4 moving to Reno. Have been an outdoorsman for all my adult life.
I have not caught a salmon with my kayak , but I have caught a 10 pound cutthroat , and have dive from it for abs and have speared fish from it.
looking forward to more ocean fishing with it.
All my 10" abalone have come from Humboldt county.
gonna get another one this year, anybody want to go?
would like to get to know the like minded folks in this community.
If you would like to help me with a sponsorship please give me a call

Btw its too much to read, and it may have been mentioned already, but i'd like to know how i can register for a campsite, or split one with someone. Might just be me, and maybe one friend. Arriving friday, departing sunday. Thanks in advance.

Eric, please post updates on the making of the Hawg Troughs. I can't be the only one who loves to see the process of finding an old growth log and transforming it into a trough!!
They were just checking everyone's fishing license, ID and hooks as well as asking about safety equipment. My buddy David didn't have a whistle, so they gave him one. They were cool, but they really need to consider how far off course they cause a human powered boat to end up when there's current ripping.I appreciated how level headed you stayed while still being explicit about your grievances. It's not hard to imagine someone spending the rest of the video bitching about government overreach and yadda yadda yadda. Well done.
I usually leave my driver's license in my car. Guess maybe I should bring it with.thats exactly what i thought! I have not been checked by our coast guard, but when stopped by DFG I have so far only needed to provide a valid fishing license. Wouldn't be very hard to start carrying both though...
Imagine the shit show it would be if they wanted to check everyone at GS... :smt002I wonder if there is a way to notify the coast guard ahead of a big event like this, not so they can harass everyone, but if they knew about it ahead of time they could potentially react to something quicker if need be. Just a thought.
Eric, I would like to sponsor Malibu_Two for GSX. It's a team of brothers that are well versed in our part of the pacific. They are excellent divers, and can cook up a mean abalone jalapeρo popper

I'm surprised the Coast Guard would be checking tackle...Back when i was in the navy we use to call them puddle-jumpers.They pulled me over in my tarpon while trolling at muir beach last year during salmon season. They checked my license and made me real in my gear so they could check for barbs. The young one made a comment about my 2 empty pliny bottles in the back but decided not to fuck with me. He said he was doing me a favor. I didn't bother to thank him as i too had lost a lot of time to the wind.
Eric

79 miles paddled from April 2nd to May 1st - not a hell of a lot to show for it, but a few salmon dinners have been much appreciated. You have your health to show for it. Much more than most can do.

Pacifics will be closed during GSX (open May 1st through 15th), but you never know when you'll hook one - even in close to shore.

Since it is under stricter regs like salmon I don't think you can because it's under a quota that is calculated according to the days that the season is open and surveyed by CDFW fish counters.
I talked to Gary and heard that story too before I launched

how deep are you setting the traps?
Where's the CG buoy? I did a quick search but couldn't find it on the web.
He has big hands if he can make the preduncle on a 25lb salmon look so small.
I was hearing a few powerboaters on the radio today talking about 'swarming' crabs.
Go get em. :smt001
I'll process and post a few photos in a while - caught a shaker... No radio bites.
Yellow blob = nice bait with diving pelicans
Red spot = caught a shaker around 17"
Probably only funny to you & me. But I acknowledge this joke. And my typo (furst typo ever). He has big hands if he can make the preduncle on a 25lb salmon look so small.
What's a preduncle, and is it anterior to the peduncle and postduncle?

Chris-Thanks Doug. This'll help determine how I load my gear prior to launching (i.e., strapping EVERYTHING down) and pare down how much stuff I bring out with me. I got too used to the easy-peasy launching at the Cove in years past.
Yeah it isn't as protected from the surf. Not a problem at high tide but at low tide the end of the breakwater has potential for breaking waves.
I've launched there several times this year and haven't had a problem. Time ur landing right and stow ur gear if possible, and enjoy the ride! :smt003Thanks for the info Ryan. Have you launched there during a rough day at low tide? Notice any difference?
Here's some good info:

Storm surf 180hr forecast
http://www.stormsurfing.com/stormuser2/images/grib/mendo_sea_61.png
On those slides,...
I was very concerned when I saw the news reports of "four different slides" at Shelter Cove. They showed pictures of caution tape at the ramp, but there were no pics of the actual slides. They also talked of people rescued by all terrain vehicle, but I didn't see pics or video of that either. That's all fine, but when we were at the Cove in the following days we couldn't see any evidence of a significant change from what is already the case - constantly eroding hillsides all the way from the launch to Deadman's...
For what it's worth, I think a mountain was made of a mole hill, but I do acknowledge that there is risk to be taken along that bluff.

Yeah, I couldn't even tell .where one was, let alone four. There was a really nice truck abandoned to the surf though out toward deadmans.
Great question, Chris. Great answers and info so far.Great info, thanks Eric!
The launch has been great lately - today it was easy peasy... - but it's definitely sanded in. You can almost drive to the end of the breakwater at any average low tide... If there's no south or west in the forecast it's pretty much like normal. The hazards come when you're coming in and don't expect a little breaker under you in shallow water - shouldn't be a problem. If there's a significant south or west swell we will need to watch out.
:smt001

For those that don't know, in order to reduce the wear on your brakes, go to a higher gear on the way down. The higher gear will slow down the speed of the car going down and the need to use too much braking power. FYI. It helps. See you boys in a few days!

The forecast keeps improving. Still cooler than normal and still prepare for a bit of rain but winds and seas are down considerably. It can rain all it wants if the wind and seas are down.

I'll be leaving Danville around 5:00 AM Thursday. I'll be in my white/blue Roatrek RV, pulling a modified PWC trailer. Let's all keep a look-out for each other in case of any road emergencies. My cell is 925 336-0726. See you at the Cove!

Are there trees at the campground? Just in case I need to build a fort to keep my tent dry ish? LolSome trees, but not many. Most of the campsites are exposed to the elements. Try to bring some extra tarps.
3 days before we are to leave to incredible Lost Coast for some MUCH needed water therapy and time with my second family, I have some other family issues that need to be addressed and won't make it up. :crybaby2: Please send my gear with Frank and Bunny.Oh shit, i need that taco tray bro. any way you can pass it off to someone still coming?
Anticipation is killing me!
Got new break pads, oil change, full tank of gas.
Leaders tied, bait in the brine.
Gear is all organized and ready to load.
Quick trip to the store, load truck, eat dinner, crash early and hit the road around 2am.
Be there in the morning!
Josh

I already handed the taco rack off to Rey, Lapu Lapu. The only thing I could cover was my filet cleaning responsibly. .....

Best GS yet for me. I had soooo much fun. I stayed at the Tides inn friday til wednesday. My friend Anthony shared the room with me and Danglin crashed on my couch a few nights. My friend Jose(the spaniard) came down from Washington for the event and stayed in the room next door. I trolled every day for salmon. Of course all i caught were lings and blacks. Thats ok cause i also got a lot of great advice on upping my salmon game from Tiny and loletaeric. I mostly enjoyed spending time yukking it up and drinking wine with all my NCKA brothers and sisters. Thanks to all the people who came together and made the tacoshack happen. It takes a village to raise a tacoshack and fishtacos make the world a better place. One of the highlights for me was watching the dueling guitar jam sessions with Danglin and the spaniard in our room. Two guys who had never met with entirely different styles came together and blew my mind with completely spontaneous improvisational guitar and vocals. Superfuckingcool. I have to get these two together again to play.It was one of the coolest things i have ever seen. Perhaps at Albion.
