Does anyone know if someone has built a standing bar that fits the front hatch rails of the slayer? I got mine Wednesday and spent about 18 hours in it this weekend. I'm already standing it, but I'd love to have a brace just to give me another solid point of contact.

Check with headwaters kayak shop in Lodi. I have see them install standing bars on various kayaks.

Yes, Dan has built a installed a stand up bar for the Slayer Propel based upon the jackson bigrig bar.  I have a project planned for one using 3/4" aluminum conduit but I haven't got around to it yet.

Here's a Jackson Blog post that I was planning to use to build my own stand up/lean bar.

I think some slight modifications towards the bend would work great on a SP13, so the bar lays flat in the front recess of the hatch.

Thanks guys, I'll give Dan a call. Does anyone know if headwaters ships stuff? I'm down on the central coast and 400 miles is a bit further than I'd like to travel just to pick up a standing bar.

He's shipped them all over the country.  Just give him a call.

Nick,,,  Go to www.duckworks and purchase the bimini fittings   ( also at most marine supply stores )

I made this using simple EMT conduit.   total cost around 25 bucks.

Be careful with DIYing this kind of thing. Your body weight plus a 3+ foot lever arm can put a LOT of stress on the mounts.

Looks like a few people have done it successfully, but I could see it going south if not done right...

Very good point. I'm planning to call Dan and see what he's got. I'm not planning to lean on it, I just need an extra point of contact for a bit more stability. It would be wise to build it to withstand the abuse in case you suddenly needed it to.

You aren't "planning" on leaning on it, but shit happens.

Maybe consider building in a "weak link" so you'll break the standing bar before you tear apart your hull? Maybe cut the aluminum conduit and join it back together with a balsa wood dowel that will snap or something plastic or rubbery that will deform?

That sounds like a good idea. Like I said though, I'm going to see what Dan can do for me before I consider building my own. I don't have a ton of free time anymore so I don't get to tinker as much as I used to.

I wouldn't worry about it on a SP13.  You can fully back the front ones (not attached to rails) through the front hatch access and the other mounts should ride on the rails which are rated to over 2000lbs.

that being said, I don't personally use a stand up/lean bar. I don't feel its too necessary for my fishing style.  My only reason for thinking of one is when i eventually get into fly fishing I want a place to put a stripping bucket and my paddle while I'm standing.  I only stand in the ocean when its pretty calm, and since the SP13 has a fairly high seat position I find it easy to stand up.
