Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Downrigger question
« on: August 27, 2022, 11:56:46 AM »
We use this on the existing gear track for the downrigger on the Compass in our house. Works well and very sturdy. No issues so far. I say go for it and spare your kayak the holes.

This style of mount, with the two mounting bolts and large surface area, as opposed to a single bolt post-mount, distributes the load across a large part of the gear track, and its screws. We run a 4lb weight with it too.

I generally despise gear track accessories for the reasons mentioned above (my Revo is 100% gear-trackless on purpose), but I have made an exception in the application of this mount.

I do this too & so far no problem. I run ~3lb weight. Top off with some braided downrigger lines. helps a lot.

Safety First / Re: Get this Spyderco knife!
« on: August 24, 2022, 09:47:44 PM »
I've got that one, but never used it much. I prefer this one, as I can whip it out a lot faster.

Ever since I was traumatized by the "whale incident", I've got to have a knife that I can access in a fraction of a second...

I've had the same one on my pfd now for 10-11 years. Still good as new!
Me too. Moving PFD to PFD but still great!
My Spyderco is clipped to the PFD for a quick draw. I pull the red line to unclip it, which is an easier motion than grabbing - especially if hands are slippery. Then, my thumb goes in the round hole and flicks the blade out. The blade is stored under almost no pressure, so the thumb flick is very easy.
You need (at least) 3 things from a safety knife:
- extremely sharp. Don’t use it for anything other than emergencies
- very easy to pull
- will not fall into the water

I kinda understand what Mel is trying to say here. It looks like a great utility knife but doesn’t seem like good safety knife…
We use NRS ones for work but not a big fan of them either…

General Talk / Re: Best place to buy ice?

Costco business center? Not sure if there is one near you. I just ordered some yeti ice this morning. Will try and let you know if it worth the money.
I love most of the stuff that Yeti makes but their “ice” is nothing better than any other ones...

It actually freezes stuff!

I don't know why I never bothered to look this up, but TODAY, I finally got around to looking up how to store cam straps:

No more bag full of tangled straps!

Grocery Outlets usually have cheaper too.
I usually stop at the Linda Mar or Petaluma one after fishing.

Check out Peter Moyle's "Inland Fishes of California". It's 20 years old, but it is an excellent resource for every freshwater fish you can imagine that lives in CA. Everything from migration patterns to spawning behavior to fin rays, it's all in this book. I still use it to this day, and I've had it for over a decade.
