While conservationists on the Eastern Seaboard are struggling to save their shad runs, things are different on the Pacific Coast. According to the Seattle-based Shad Foundation, which studies 30-plus shad species around the world, the American shad was introduced in the Sacramento and Columbia Rivers more than a century ago and is flourishing.

They are now fairly widespread, confirmed Jon Rowley, my go-to fish expert, who is also in Seattle. “The run in the Columbia peaks in June,” he said. “People aren’t used to it here, and you can probably count the people who know how to fillet it on the fingers of one hand, so you don’t see the fish in the markets much—the roe somewhat more. The quality is variable.”

I love flyfishing for shad but the run here on the russian has been super shitty for years now! I dunno what is different about the other river systems. Maybe this year will be better. Fingers crossed!!!

Wonder what effect the shad intro has had on delta or Pacific ecosystem.  It MUST have had SOME effect, right??  I mean, they are biodense like a muthagrabba, from all indications . . .

We have so many Shad on the Valley rivers it's nuts! 40 Shad days are common.
To float over schools of 300 fish is common here on the American. Just awesome fish to watch, catch, fight, and eat!

  Dude, so jealous. They are one of the greatest flyrod fishes second only to Steelhead IMO!! Its been at least 5 years since we have had a decent run. Guess I better get up to the American

I wanna!

I remember watching a guy at shanghai bend on the feather just tear up the shad on a fly rod.  He was using an indicator and roll casting his way to the  envy of everybody close enough to watch.

I'd always used shooting heads, so that was an eye opener but made perfect sense.

Traditionally on Memorial weekend the outflow from thermolito used to always produce well.  They should begin heading upstream fairly soon.

5wt to light?

I've gotten a lot on a crappy 4wt. 
6 is my personal preference.
Got a new switch rod I'm hoping to get some on this year.

Now if you hook one of those big 5-6 pound females NO WAY are you getting it in on a 4wt.
