I haven't seen this boat. It's located at Lake Merritt in Oakland. My buddy a limnologist that I work with has access and lives nearby. So, if anybody is interested, let me know and I will hook you up.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has released an updated fish advisory issued today for San Francisco Bay that provides safe-eating advice for 18 fish species, including new “do-not-eat” advice for Mississippi Silverside, Pacific Sardine and Topsmelt. Additionally, no one should eat fish or shellfish from Lauritzen Channel in Richmond Inner Harbor.
OEHHA developed the recommendations based on the levels of mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) found in fish caught from the bay. The “do-not-eat” advice for all fish in the Lauritzen Channel located in Richmond Inner Harbor remains in effect from the previous advisory due to high levels of dieldrin and DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its byproducts).

If you have any questions about these advisories, please contact OEHHA at fish.advisory@oehha.ca.gov.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Saltwater Gear - Charkbait.com
« on: February 14, 2022, 03:39:07 PM »
If you haven't shopped at Charkbait.com, I highly recommend you do.  The gear selection is narrow scope - California centric saltwater, and the customer service is top notch!  These guys want to set you up with the right stuff and bend over backwards to do so.  here's a quote from the owner Mark Smith, "We’ve been at this a long time, were the first online tackle shop focused on saltwater fishing.  We were also the least financially funded business given I started this firm by cashing in an IRA and credit card debt…  That reinforced some good, sound business practices as I developed our position in the marketplace.  Our strengths lie in product knowledge, saltwater fishing experience, and of course customer service. Those are our keys to success.  We’ve always competed well against better funded businesses, we’re more efficient than others and folks here wear a few different hats which is ultimately helpful to our clients and our bottom line.  Glad you found us. Word of mouth has been our best source of advertising over the past 20+ years."

I got the following plea from Berly Pro.  I confirmed the incident.

Hey legend! I'm sorry for the heading but this one is really important to me and you could help out a lot of people.

I know I ask a lot of you, but here's another time but I promise you this one is worth it. If you haven't heard the team at Viking Kayaks had a fire at their factory in New Zealand over the weekend and have lost a lot. This is a family-owned business that has been built up for the last 21 years. Personally, I have met Grant and much of the team and I can promise you they are hard-working and amazing people. If there's one thing I've learned in life is when someone needs help, you help them. We've put together a give-a-little page with the hope of earning 20K for the team. This could help pay someone's wages or even get them up and running quickly, but more importantly, it's a little thing we can do to help while they rebuild.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife
Draft Conservation Plan - Public Meeting
December 20, 2021

On December 1, 2021 CDFW released an updated draft Conservation Plan (CP) for public review and comment. The CP is a critical component of CDFW’s application for an Incidental Take Permit under Section 10 of the federal Endangered Species Act and will address interactions with endangered humpback whales, blue whales, and leatherback sea turtles in the California commercial Dungeness crab fishery. View more information about the updated draft.

CDFW will hold a virtual public meeting regarding the updated draft Conservation Plan from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm on Friday January 7, 2022. Additional information on how to join is posted on CDFW’s Whale Safe Fisheries webpage. During the meeting, CDFW will provide a brief overview of the Conservation Plan, then spend the remainder of the meeting addressing questions from the public. CDFW requests that participants complete a thorough review of the draft CP prior to joining the meeting, and come prepared with specific questions for CDFW staff.

Written comments are requested and should be submitted to WhaleSafeFisheries@wildlife.ca.gov by 5:00 pm on Monday January 17, 2022.

« on: March 24, 2021, 09:51:06 PM »

Pay It Forward / Teaching salmon biology
« on: May 08, 2019, 02:40:14 PM »
As part of my job I teach Salmonids in the Classroom in 34 classes. I install aquariums, deliver eyed eggs to them, lecture and guide various field trips. Gratton School 8th grade made the video found at the link below.  It's 19 minutes long so plan the time if you choose to watch it.  These kids get it.

Here is the link for the salmon video.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / Trout Derby Lake McSwain
« on: February 13, 2019, 12:17:20 PM »
Lake McSwain Trout Derby April 6 and 7.  Must Register before April 2nd.  See attached flyer.

The derby is a bit remedial, but McSwain is a beautiful place to fish in the spring and the payoff could be decent.  Last October at the fall derby I ended up with a smoker full of trout and $465 in my pocket.  Not bad for a little put and take event.

Ridgerunner usually takes one of my spare rooms, but I should have another available if your interested send me a PM.

I'm helping to coordinate the Salmon Festival at Knights Ferry on the Stanislaus River to be held from 10am-3pm on November 10th (Flyer attached).  I'm sending this call out for help because we are in need of two things: 1) We need 3 acoustic musicians to provide entertainment (sets are: 10-11:30, 11:30-1:00, and 1:00 to 1:30) 2) We would like to have a live bald eagle and handler to provide educational interpretation.

If any of you can provide acoustic entertainment a bald eagle or can point me in the right direction, please let me know.
Thank you,
Riverwatcher LT

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Harpoon/flying gaff for Halibut
« on: September 11, 2018, 10:21:52 AM »
Before I go out and buy something that only works once, I'm hoping to get a some recommendations on brands and models of harpoons for Hali.  The KUFA Sports Halibut Harpoon appeals to me at $85 with a SS head, but I see they sell what looks like the same thing for $46 apparently the head is not SS.  Danielson makes a wood handle model for $39.
Any advice would be great.
