First Weekend in JUNE.....
Update January 5,2016:
NorCal Kayakers
3.5 day kayak trip
departing Thursday 6/2/16 8 PM
returning Monday 6/6/16 7 AM
For the 3.5 day trip we'll leave June 2 in the evening, and come back on Monday June 6. Price is $800 each.
NCKA Islander trips have proved to be some of the BEST times ever. Last year I guess we started asking late and didn't get enough sign ups. then, everyone was bummed because we didn't go. We usually go out to San Clemente island from Fisherman's landing in SD. We can do that again, for 3 day or 4 day trip. Or, we can extend to 4.5-5.5 day and go further south. In JUNE.....
If you have gone on previous Islander trips, you already know how cool it is. If you have not, check out the old threads.....you owe it to yourself to get on board for a few full days of full-on fishing, with the Bro's
We will need a deposit to hold your spot and full payment well before the trip date. We'll use PayPal. I will make list of lucky participants on this post. Any substitutions for deposits or full trip payments will have to be handled personally. Full cost will be due in March.
In other words, if you sign up and later decide you can't go, it's your responsibility to find a replacement to take your slot, and arrange the appropriate transfer of monies between you and your replacement. (I get confused easily, and it's already pretty complicated setup for a simple man like me). Deposit will be $100.00 to secure your spot. Full payment is fine as well.
I expect to get the booking contract from Islander Inc. within a few days. We can start taking deposits now. Paypal $100 to polepole@northwestkayakanglers.com. Send the money as a friend, or I'll hit you up to cover the paypal tax. Include your screen name in the message so I know who you are. Thanks.

Barring any unforeseen issue, there's no way I won't be on that boat :smt007 :smt007 :smt007

I want to go, pending finances at time of sign up.

I would not mind going for a ride farther south. My next long range is in July.

Count me in! Try to do it during Fathers Day wknd, that would be awesome.

I will be there

Me and my buddy Tim would be down for this. :smt006

The wife has been properly primed, I'd be into this. :smt003

Hi All, I changed the poll to reflect options on the number of days. Click all the options that you would be interested in. We'll go with either the one with the most votes, or the longest option that has at least 20 votes. Please only vote if you are serious in going. As for rough pricing, last year a 2.5 day was $545, and a 1.5 day was $330. I believe our 3.5 day to San Clemente 2 years ago was in the $745 range, but the current price will be higher, guessing up to $800-ish. I didn't list a 1.5 day as it's just too far to drive down to San Diego for a 1.5 day trip. I'm guessing a 5.5 day could be in the $1500+ range assuming it is something longer range. This is purely a guess.

-
it's only allowing one option :smt009
Fixed.

Last year Dustin and I hopped on board a 2.5 day OEX/BWE trip, since we didn't have an NCKA one. It was in June. The trip had a smattering of small kine yellowtail trolling 'dines. I caught 4 in the 5-8 pound range. It also had a good showing of halibut up to about 30 pounds, more of a deep water bite in the 80-100 foot range. One WSB was caught. And once again, we made it to the backside of San Clemente Island and had an off the hook sheepshead bite deep in the kelp, and a good showing of calicos from 2 feet deep to 100+ feet. There were also whitefish and good showing of quality rockfish (reds and boccacio) out deep. Basically it was a smorgasborg!
-Allen
-
Voted!
-
I'm in. Just book what we can get. If there's not enough NCKA interest we can open it up to the BWE cats. A bunch of them were bummed when I told them we didn't have enough heads to do a trip last year and said they would've loved to have joined us.
If anyone is rolling with me this year they need to meet me at my house...lol.
-
I am in again, I had a blast on the last trip.

If it's Mexican waters, I"M DOWN!.

This whole thread should be erased and start a new one for this year. I see quotes from last year? :smt003 And restart the poles. :smt044

Please DO NOT sign in here or vote if you are not totally serious about going. EVERY year we get a bunch of people saying they are interested and every year about half the people who say they are interested end up not going.

Yeah, and this year we'll likely take deposits early, as every year we have people sign up and bail right before deposits are due, leaving us scrambling to find a replacement. So start saving your pennies now.

Hell yeah!

Those were some fun times!!
-
Pennies being saved! I have never gone on a trip like this before, so I would be thrilled if things work out. Would I be correct to assume that I will have at least two month's notice regarding the date of the trip? The less notice I have, the harder it is to take time off work since my schedule is booked months in advance. Thanks!
-
Damnit, I hate Islander fever. Every time these posts pop up I start going back and re-reading all of the old reports. 8 months is a long damn time.

I should retract my commitment to attend this trip. Just remembered my lease is up around that time and will be moving. Feel free to remove my votes :smt010
-
Just a note on a 4.5 day trip, as I received a couple questions. Likely it wouldn't be a Mexico trip. We'd just spend too much time just travelling. That being said, we can ask if there is anything "special" that can be done. For instance, last year on one of the kayak trips, they had a good weather day and went offshore looking for bluefin. They found some, but didn't end up getting any, and didn't even end up splashing the kayaks in the water. However, that was a limited load , 12 person trip, and the captain though with that number it was manageable. I think a full 20 person trip could be mayhem. But with this crew, who all know each other and work well together, I could see splitting into 2 teams, having 1/2 fish off the kayaks offshore while the rest fished from the boat, then switching teams at some point in the day. There may be a surcharge for something like this as we'd burn more fuel searching offshore. Anyways, no promises here, but we'll certainly inquire about the possibility, and it would depend on if there are fish offshore.

-Allen
-
That trip was so fun. The visibility was amazing I'm in !!!
-
Hope lobster is open this time :smt007
-
We should nix the 2.5 day option. 2 days of fishing is just not long enough. 3 days are great, and I think 4 days at SCI would be the ultimate. If we get into 5 days that's gotta be a Mexico trip.
-
Dang I got the fever now too! Voted for 2.5 and 3.5 day.
If it's a 5-day trip, I'm out though...for that kinda time & money I'd rather do a proper long-range trip on the Royal Polaris or another boat that actually produces. :smt002
-
five days on a boat with FM1??!! What could possible go wrong :smt044 I think 3.5-4.5 sounds just right :smt003

Just removed myself. ...Maybe if the stars align just right, Ill be a last minuet fill in.
-
I voted 3.5 and 4.5. Less would be too much work for not enough fishing, more would likely be out of my price range.
-
Ding, ding, ding ... 3.5 is up to 20 votes. We'll give it a couple more days to see if any of the other options pop up. But hey, we have enough interest to do an Islander trip next year!!!
-Allen
-
Oh ya...im down. any certain target species or is it just a freeforall with whatever is biting at the time? And we would be staying on the boat for however many days is decided off shore or do we dock at night?
-
We board the boat around 5pm. Load up everything, get situated, pick up bait and travel all night to San Clemente Island. Fish for 3 full days, anchored at night at San Clemente. It is an uninhabited island essentially, no docks or structures beyond a couple research shacks. then travel back to SD overnight after the 3d day of fishing. So the "3.5" day-trip really stretches over 5 days.
And yes, we fish for whatever is happening. Could be "exotics" like WSB or YT. LOTS of halibut down there and they bite way better than their northern cousins. What turns out to be the consistent blast is working shallows for sheepshead and calico bass. As Polepole mentions, we might be able to do an offshore foray if warranted and with an additional surcharge for fuel.
With El Nino, who knows what might be available at SCI.....or offshore for that matter?
No matter what it's EPIC. 20 NCKA's on a beautiful BIG boat, cabins, food, beer if you want it. They have a zodiac that will concierge water, beer, samwiches and fresh live bait to us OTW in our kayaks.

Islander contacted me yesterday. John and jackie (wife) are sole owners now. shane is bought out apparently.
She says she's not even started the 2016 schedule yet, so we are looking really good to get a preferred weekend (trying to avoid father's day). Likely WEd night to Sunday morning, though we could do thursday night to Monay morning.....She'll contact me in two weeks and we can nail it down.
if you have preferences for specific weekends, and days of the week, please post here. I can run another survey on that topic if neccesary.

soft preference for first half of June
-
My understanding is that the later in the summer it is the better the chance at pelagics. Are there options other than in June, given she doesn't have a 2016 calendar yet?

They normally don't want to run kayak trips past June as that is prime time for higher margin trips. But it won't hurt to ask.
-Allen
-
I also believe a lot of our members become a bit less available towards end of une and into summer, with kids out of school and family trips planned.
.Anyway this June will likely be like 2013 high summer........
(Only slightly joking)

In case anyone cares about moon phases in June 2016.

Maybe we should pick the weekend with the most favorable tides. Either a "halibut" tide, or a decent morning incoming?

I honestly haven't even looked at the tides for those dates. I'd just prefer a nice incoming tide over a huge outgoing, or a moderate tide verses a big, swinging tide.
Youknowhatimsayin?
-
The weekends of the morning high tides happen to be the weekends of the new and full moons. So there are big tides those days. However, it appears the rising tide to the morning high is fairly moderate. The afternoon low is minues, but it's a moderate swing from the morning high to the low, then the low to the nighttime high is the big current. This may work out just right for us. If I look and moons and tides, I like that first weekend since I generally like a new moon over a full moon.

Talking to them.....We have a go for the first weekend in June, so far. They have upped prices so that part is under discussion right now. Trying to make it as available as possible for as many ncka as possible.
We are still way early, which is part of the challenge, they've done no bookings on the 2016 calendar yet. didn't even have it started till I called them. So. patience, young Jedi.

Ok folks. We were able to confirm and finalize the weekend, and the pricing for Islander 2016 trip!!
First weekend in June. For the 3.5 day trip we'll leave either June 1 or June 2 in the evening, and come back on Sunday June 5 or Monday June 6. Price is $800 each. A bit more than the $765 quoted for last year's trip, but way less than the boat charges for other charters (cause they love NCKA).
The owner John Coniff has been wanting to join us on this trip and this year he is able to come. Skipper Jason of course will also be on duty. Cook Rick is still on duty. Deckmeister Karl is now managing the store at Fisherman's Landing, and deckhand Jarod got a different job. John is going to offer Jarod the opportunity to deckhand for this trip, cause Jarod is our boy. They all dig the NCKA trips.
We are not using OEX for booking this year, I will handle all that business.
PM me with your full name and your paypal/email address, and I will PM back the Paypal address. Once the deposit is registered at paypal, I will add you on the list.
Edit by polepole ... I move the list and updated into to the first post in this thread.

Looking for a honest assessment. In large groups my deafness can stick out because I can not hear verbal instructions that may be given on the fly. Most of NCKA have been cool about helping me out on various events. But it gets not fun for me it I am constantly out of the loop. I have thick skin and if you think I will have difficulty on the trip and keeping up with the events telling me now will save me $800 and a load of frustration!
Any input welcome. Thanks!

You did great with us on the salmon charter!! Youd do great here. I mostly use hand signals anyway. :smt006

I think you'd be fine, Ryan. Most of the time we are out OTW fishing in small groups (much like any other Saturday/Sunday). The only time we are all together is during dinner.
Thinking about the logistics, it may be harder to hail the crew onboard when you need more bait or a fresh beer or need them to pickup your stringer of fish for icing/prep. Because that is normally communicated via VHF radio. But, chances are you will be fishing nearby a friend or 2, who could simply relay your message to the crew. I've been thinking about getting one of those waterproof notepads & pen (Rite in the Rain brand) because that may improve comms OTW. Or...we'll need to learn more hand signals than the one Craig taught me (shark) hahaha.

I don't think there will be any issues, but I also think we should check with the captain/crew, as ultimately they are responsible for all of our safety.

I don't know....last year when Pole Pole and I hopped on the OEX trip the crew didn't even let us help with the loading, if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure they did EVERYTHING, including taking the kayaks and loaded carts down to the boat.

OK - I'll join this shaving team. Every time I get a Tuna on 'yak, I'll shave my balls.

BTW, there are 2 guys on the list that don't plan on fishing from kayaks. We're checking with the Islander to see if we can squeeze 2 more kayak anglers on this trip, as I believe the trip is limited due to kayak rack space. So if you really want to get on this trip, I'd jump on that 2nd wait list position ASAP.

I don't know much about San Clemente. Is it like Farallon Islands here where a ton of charter boats go out there for rock/ling fishing?
-

I don't know how much pressure it gets, but I've been out on the boat a total of four times and have never really seen more than 3 or 4 other boats out there.
The "weather" side gets even less pressure and it's possible to get way up into the kelp (if there is any next year) where ONLY kayaks can get in to.
-
Update. The Islander confirmed there are no issues with RBark joining. They also said we can take 2 extra kayak anglers since 2 on the list are not kayak fishing. So Bchen and Raydon are on deck. Yeehaw!

On another note, any of you guys on the waitlist interested in perhaps trying to get another trip together? Maybe a 2.5 day one as that would likely be easier to fill up. Anyone not on the waitlist interested in this?

That's actually a pretty good score for a bunch of rookies on a 1 day trip. I didn't get anything but a few calicoes on that trip, but I was still hooked on the islander life style.

We'll take care of this. Thanks.
If you are going to "jump ship" it is your responsibility to find someone to "buy" your deposit.
-
I'm just putting it out there that my new preference is the shorter cheaper and later in the year trip. If it doesn't happen no worries! I hella like all the people on this boat so I'm going to have a good time no matter what. I was trying to be responsible by posting on here that I'm trying to find someone to cover my spot. Was I supposed to be more private about it?
-
No worries!
Just putting it out there because I received some PMs asking how to go about switching trips.
-
I just shot Guitarzan a message to see if he can swing this trip, or not. He is next in line.
If Ben can't make it Cowman is up next and I know he prefers to be on this trip.
Lost Keith and Smokey Won - looks like there is also a chance for the two of you, as well. Are you guys still interested?

OK - I have contacted everyone on the wait-list. :smt001

Thanks Dustin!

Ben is out for now. Moving to the end of the line.
Dan, you are in. I guess you and Ravensblack should figure out a way to transfer deposit $.
Keith and Won, if still interested you guys can work something out with Annie and Nick.

Tough decision though, it was either between sending her in May and miss Gimme Shelter or send her in June and miss the Islander. I chose GS. :smt003
Maybe next year. I'm sure you dudes will have a blast!!

-
Just over 4 months. Anyone got any questions?
I'm fishing dropper loops and fly-lined bait for the VAST majority of the time. If we get deep in the kelp or when fishing from the boat I'll use "a little bitty stupid hook with squid on it".
I can't believe nobody has jumped on that open spot yet!
-
I was gonna send a couple of you some questions on tackle?? What should i be bringing and what should i avoid bringing. That way i can stock up

Depending on size and brand, will be difficult to finf a new 2 speed for 250. I have extra Avet mxl and lx 2 speed if you want to borrow.

Hi,
1st trip (actually, never been on a boat of this size, either smaller or much larger), so bunch of questions, would appreciate help.
1) What non-fishing stuff do I bring? Food? Water? Do they have fridge (for beer)?
2) Do they have electricity (for FF, GPS and SS)?
3) What kind of fish are we targeting? I understand there might be fishing from the boat as well as from kayak?
3a) Do I need to bring heavy setup, or what I use for longs and butts (med-heavy) is going to work?
3b) How deep (100s or 1000s ft) ?
4) How's fish handled on the boat? How big cooler do I need to have in the car? ;)
5) Are AI allowed (due to size)? If yes - do I want to take it (setup, etc.)? I guess I don't but want to understand options.
5a) Hobie Adventure or Trident 4.7 ? (Allen and Allen, I think I know your opinion ;) )
Thanks!

Some answers. :smt006
1 - if you have any special drinks or snacks to bring you can, but there is no shortage of food being prepared by Geezer during the trip. You will not go hungry. Three legit meals a day are served, as well as a snack between lunch and dinner. Breakfast and lunches are cooked meals, not bagels and cold sandwiches. Two years ago, a few of us barely made it through the third day's dinner because we were already maxed out from the previous meals. Soda and ice waters from the fountain are free. Beer is available on the honor system.
Bringing big coolers full of beer is frowned upon. NCKA trips are discounted already so help out the crew and buy your beers from the galley. I bring a small cooler with a few waters and coconut juice. I also bring cereal, because I'm not a big breakfast guy and wolfing down a bowl of cereal helps me get in the water ASAP.
Other non-fishing stuff to consider:
Towel for the shower.
A lightweight sleeping bag. The beds have linen, but I know my little fleece sleeping bag is clean!
A power strip to charge multiple batteries. Each stateroom has a power outlet.
Here's a typical day's menu:
-
2 - yes, each stateroom has a power outlet.
3 - realistically we are targeting halibut, calicoes, sheepshead and whitefish, but there is always a chance for yellowtail, bonito, and white sea bass. Last year, only a few weeks after Allen and I hopped on a non-NCKA trip, Dan Hernandez and crew were nailing yellowfin tuna right where we had been fishing a few weeks earlier. With a full blown El Niño, I would imagine things could get even more interesting.
There is usually the opportunity for deep water rockfish, as well.
I use my everyday Nor-cal setups on these trips. I guess a heavy set up could be useful in the rare instance of a hot exotics bite, but you can get away without it. You can end up fishing in anywhere from 5' to 250' of water. Not sure how deep Jason was running out for RF.
-
4 - any fish you want to keep are tagged with your number and tossed in the fish hold, which is kept at just above freezing temp. If you're on your yak and catch something you want stored right away you can hail the skiff on your VHF and they will come pick it up for you. Otherwise you can just game clip em and the crew will handle them when you land.
On our way back to port on the last evening the fish will be layed out on deck for photo ops and cleaning/filleting. The crew can either clean and gut or fillet your fish for you. In the past there has been a very small fee for filleting fish, and other times it has been on the house. You can also choose to keep your fish whole.
You can see the tagged fish in the background of this pic:
What size cooler you bring depends on how ambitious you are and whether or not you are going to have your catch filleted. Also keep in mind that the crew can not fillet sheepshead, so if you end up keeping a few big ones, that can be a lot of cooler space!
-
5 - AFAIK, AIs and PAs are not allowed. The 22 passenger load limit is set by the number of kayaks the racks can accommodate. The big Hobies just take up too much space.
Other than that, bring whichever yak you are most comfortable in. You can end up in your kayak for ten or so hours a day if you choose.
-
Thanks a lot, ! Very helpful, as usual! :)
One more I meant to ask - what about bait/squid?
-
Worst case is we end up with a bunch of pinner anchovies.
Hopefully (and usually) we end up with nice sized hardy sardines.
Best case is there is lots of squid around and we jig up some for bait....or the captain's buddy comes by at night and dumps a bunch on us like two years ago!
With this in mind, bring hook sizes to accommodate everything from pinner anchovies to possibly large mackerel.
The boat also has frozen squid to use which is actually pretty effective.

Thanks! I'm ready to go ;)

Dustin ascended to Islander Tackle Enlightenment long ago. He's got it down to one small box. He pretty much fishes the bait, and that's about all you need to do. Hooks and sinkers!
Hooks: I'll have #4 and 2/0. The #4 for on pinner chovies and strip bait for smaller mouthed fish like whitefish. 2/0 for dines and targeting sheeps. 4/0 if there are larger macks and you like to fish them.
Sinkers: 1/2-1 ounce egg sinker. 4 ounce torpedos. Egg sinker above a hook with no space between them for squid strips. 4 ounce torpedos for 3-way dropper loop and reverse dropper loop. Captain Jason gave us a lesson a couple years back and told us to get rid of all the hardware. That means no swivels or slidos on the 3-ways.
I like to change it up and works the shallows casting surface lures like sluggos or swimbait on 3/8 ounce wide gap weedless worm hooks or 7x size surface irons. I also bring a few irons to yo-yo.
While the boat has some frozen squid and will work to get some live squid, it is never a guarantee. Last year I brought two 5 pound box, one each for Dustin and I. It came in handy as there was no live squid available on that trip. We burned through those boxes on a single day deep in the kelp fishing for sheepies. Could probably have made them last a couple days, but we were handing it out on the water.
Bring a power strip with a long cord for charging batteries and radios in the rooms. There is one outlet in each room and in some rooms it is on the ceiling, so a longer cord lets you rest the strip on a bed or the sink while charging. Last year I had a shorter cord and the strip would hang in the air, sometimes pulling out.

If you got a few minutes to kill, here is a link to Drew Gregory's show that he did at San Clemente while fishing from the Islander.
About halfway in he makes a really good point. At some point you will need to make an important decision as to whether you are going to target big boiler calicoes in shallow or try your hand out deep for yellowtail, wsb, etc.

We gonna do the Dolphin again this year, or should we step it up?
-
I watched that Drew Gregory show and it was pretty good. Since I was watching it on my bigscreen via youtube using Chromecast, I queued up a bunch of random San Clemente Island kayak videos. Then sat there and watched like 40 minutes of SCI action!

I've done the same thing.
More than once.

I really wish I could go on this trip.
As far as parking goes, I found parking in the parking lot where the boat leaves was about $10 less than the dolphin for the entire stay.
Do the math and see what is the better deal. It could be different this year.

Seeing your guys post brings back great memory's! I parked on the street it's free for 72hrs.

We had a stellar crew the last time there. Bloodbath and I were talking about it last night while pouring dive belt weights.. We have a game plan! :smt007

Yo ! just seen this on craigslist. Don't know if this is something you would be using on your trip. Live bait hooks. Looks like some even have the split rings attached. Was introduced to those last year for the first time. I think Dustin mentioned he was going to set some up. Maybe a group buy. Hope it helps. Maybe next year for me.
A few guys up in the Santa cruz area for the express.

Circle hooks, especially ringed circle hooks, are pricey. On long range trips, I only use them when fishing for tuna. I use J hooks for yellowtail. However, whatever Dustin is catching with them is apparently working. I caught my 39 pound halibut last year on a 7/0 J hook.

We're getting close. Anybody have any questions on gear, etc?
Your rf/ling/halibut gear you use up here will work fine down there.
I'll mostly be fly-lining live bait and sending one down on a dropper loop looking for halibut, WSB, and YT. If that's not panning out I'll either be hitting the potholes in the kelp for sheeps, or fishing for calicoes/whitefish, depending on which part of the island we're at.

Hi all,
I've been trying to hold off on this as long as possible but it seems unlikely I can make changes in time for this trip.
I am offering my spot up to anyone who wants to take it. I have put down $100 already. If $100 is the difference you need to make this trip, then consider it a discount from me as thanks for taking over my spot. If you can do full price, just paypal me the $100 and send the rest to polepople. I am OK with either option.
I'm super bummed but life is what it is. If no one takes my spot, I will pay full price and go as a non-kayaker. But I would prefer to avoid this at this time.

So, the other day I went in to pick up my three newly refurbished Revo Toros and ended up leaving OPS with three refurbished Revo Toros and a Shimano Trevala/Penn Spinfisher V4500L combo loaded with 200 yards of 50lb PowerPro Maxcuatro. Should be a pretty sweet spin-trolling set-up. Medium fast action/medium light power rod has good bend and just enough backbone. Would be a blast to hook into a nice yellowtail or bonito with this set-up. :smt007

Nice setup! Good to know! Thanks, Won. The only other decent spinning rods they had at OPS were too stiff for trolling or just seemed too beefy.
-
I've been eyeing those Terez spinning rods. :smt007 Pricey though.
-
Yeah, they had a perfect Terez at OPS when I was in there a few weeks ago, but I started thinking for that price I might as well grab the Loomis that I liked....but both rods were gone last time I was in there. :smt010
My new Teramar is pretty dope, but a little too stiff for proper trolling. Awesome for just about anything else, though!
-
This will be my first trip, maybe a stupid question, what kind of rigs should I prepare for this trip? Also, do people carpool to SD? Thanks!
-
What kind of fishing do you do up here, Tonggao?
For the most part, our typical rockfish/striper/halibut gear we use up here works just as well down there. I'll be fishing mostly dropper loops and fly-lined live bait, but cut bait fished on size 1 hooks under a 1 or 2oz egg sinker is a deadly set-up for sheepshead, calicoes, and whitefish. Throwing lures for calicoes is also fun, and pretty much a sure thing.

Thanks a lot for the info! I mostly fish for rockfish here with jigs/swimbait/drop-loops and a couple of times for halibat with 3-way swivel. One thing I am a little confused is I mostly use size 7/0 hooks for rockfish here, size 1 hooks are way smaller but these fish you listed are still pretty big, should I downsize hook size in general?

Sheepshead and especially whitefish have small mouths. Using bigger hooks usually has them just stripping your bait off the hook. I even drop down to #4 hooks sometimes. I'll have various hooks from #4 to 4/0, and use the size appropriate to the bait or the target species.

Woohoo, payment sent!
I have sooo many lures for this trip. And I KNOW I'll probably buy a grip more at the Fishermens Landing tackle shop!
This time, I aim to be the last one off the water at least twice. Gonna maximize my time. Plus, I'm going to catch a 60lb bluefin...just a heads up!

This is gonna be a super long haul for me so I'm looking to cram as much fishing in as possible. Right now my plan is to stop in Monterey and fish 5/28-29 and then head south and fish La Jolla and/or Ensenada 5/30-6/1. Anybody down to chase YT before the boat leaves?
-
Sonny, can you PM me your paypal address or some way for Kevin to get you your deposit money, please?
No hurry. You can give it to Howard/Hojoman. He'll be on the same trip. Thanks.

If there's a hot bite going on I may fish Thursday morning....but I'm usually in chill mode pre-departure.

Medium fast action/medium light power rod has good bend and just enough backbone. Would be a blast to hook into a nice yellowtail or bonito with this set-up. :smt007
Nice setup! Although I think that setup would be definitely fun to use, if fishing near structure where you need to worry about the YT breaking you off in kelp or rocks, that ML trevala will be a bit under-powered in my opinion. Thanks for the advice, Won. After having Derik hang off of the tip of the rod I did feel as if it was just a bit too lite, so I traded in the 30/50 for the 50/100. Still a medium fast action and medium heavy power. Probably better for trolling than anything else I have. I feel like I missed a lot of my live lined bites on the slow troll last year 'cause my Lami was too stiff.

Hard not to think about this trip all the time as we get closer.... Starting to browse for gear, too, and I don't need more gear. FFS.
With water temps the way they are, what are the chances we get a shot at tuna? Do they come close to San Clemente?
-
I don't think a tuna has ever been caught by a kayaker on an Islander trip, but last year an episode of Sport Fishing with Dan Hernandez was filmed at SCI a few weeks after Allen and I were down there. They were right next to the island ropin YFT right where we had been fishing a few weeks earlier.
-
Here's some SCI YFT tuna action.
Doesn't look like they're too far off of the island. Actually, it does look like parts of the vid were filmed quite aways from the island. Haven't had a chance to watch it all yet.

Checkout this cool old story from here: http://www.jdsbiggame.com/report.htm
""The Clemente Monster Out of the Depth
The following is set down somewhat hesitantly. He who ventures aside from the accepted groves of believe lays himself open not alone to jibes, but to direct attack upon his veracity. It is human nature to scoff at those things which are not understood, or which are not simple of explanation. The most startling incident related in the following pages I experienced myself, saw with my own eyes.. Some twenty-five or thirty personal acquaintances, all of them reputable, many of them men of substance and standing in their respective communities, also saw with their own eyes the identical thing which I saw. The reader is at liberty to believe, or not to believe, what follows. However the fact remains that it happened: that I saw what I am about to describe. It happen in September of the year 1916.
I was over at San Clemente Island after Marlin Swordfish. We had left Mosquito Harbor about seven o’clock in the morning. The day was overcast with a high fog, and windless. The sea was like glass except for a small roll coming down the coast. All objects on the surface, birds and driftwood, appeared black. Visibility was perfect, the sea stretching away to the sharp line of the horizon. These details are important, so bear them in mind. By about eight o’clock we were perhaps a mile and a half off White Rock which is some three miles above Mosquito. I was sitting on top of the cabin watching for fins, my field glasses beside me. My boatman was busy at something down in the cockpit. A bait was out and the rod lashed to the fishing chair. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, and to seaward, I saw something big and black lift above the surface. I whirled, gasped, then clapped my glasses on it and yelled to my boaman to head for it. A scant quarter mile of a mile off there reared up out of the water the Thing which I instinctively knew was what, for years, we had called the “Clemente Monster,” which many had see, and about which there had been endless wonderment.
I shall try to describe it to you as best I can. Try to imagine a great columnar neck, or body, eight to ten feet thick and lifting twenty feet above the surface. Surmount this neck or body with a flat-topped, blunt, reptilian head. On either side of the head place two huge, round and bulging eyes. I dont believe they were an inch under a foot and a half across, perhaps more. There you have the essentials of what we saw. At my first shout my boatman stuck his head out of the cabin jitney and let out a queer little squawk. I don’t know that I blame him particularly! Steadily we forged towards the Thing. Remember, it was about a quarter of a mile away. My glasses were of seven power. I had them on it from the first moment I caught a glimpse of it. I don’t know precisely, but would guess that they brought it up to within a couple of hundred yards of us.
Certainly I could see it plainly enough to note various details. Two things stood out above all others- those enormous eyes and its unbelievable huge bulk. I never want to look at such eyes again. They were like the creations of a nightmare! Their very size, of course, left one breathless. But that was only a detail. It is utterly impossible to describe the coldness, the expressionlessness of them. It was like looking into the dim past when earth’s life consisted of great, slimy, horrible creatures dragging their way through gargantuan forest and over dead, sullen seas. They litterally froze me in my seat.
Later my man said I was as white as a sheet, my teeth chattering, my knees shaking. I wouldn’t be surprised. Neither in a museum, nor in any reconstructed picture of a prehistoric creature have I ever seen eyes which resembled those. The trunk, or neck, or whatever it was appeared above the surface, seemed to covered with a coarse, reddish-brown bristles. It wasn’t hair. They stood out rigidly from the body. It is strange that I should have gathered any impression of color in the light, but I did and, as will develop later, it is quite likely that I was correct in my impression. The trunk, or neck, was more or less erect. The head was turning slowly as though surveying the surface of the sea. The Thing did not rise and fall in the slight roll of the sea. Instead the waves broke against it. Give full consideration to what that statement means! I gathered the impression that the head was lowered. Certainly I saw nothing resembling a mouth. Others who have seen it say they saw a mouth. I didn’t. The great head continued its pivoting, seeming to make three-quarters of a circle. Then it saw us. The pivoting stopped. Those terrible eyes fixed themselves upon us coldly and without any expression noticeably through the lenses of the field glasses. For a few moments it regarded us fixedly, then, as though some great, hidden hand had seized it, it slowly sank. There was no visible movement of the great trunk, no commotion on the surface. Slowly, majestically, by comparison making the fluking of a whale seem a panicky, convulsive dive, it sank and disappeared beneath the surface. There was no swirl, no bubbles to mark where it had been, or where it sank. I don’t know how long it was up; perhaps a minute and a half, My boatman claims five or tem, but that is ridiculous. Out boat being slow, by the time we turned towards it I doubt that we approached appreciable closer. So what I saw I saw from about a quarter of a mile away and through the lenses of field glasses.
It is a little difficult to describe my emotions after the Thing sank. I had always loved the sea, particularly around and about San Clemente Island. With the appearance of the Thing, and its disappearance beneath the waters across which we were fishing, something of the friendliness went out of that sea and didn’t come back for a long time. I caught myself glancing furtively overside and with a strange prickling sensation up and down my spine. We went on fishing that day but neither of us was particularly happy. I know I felt a pronounced sense of relief when we dropped our hook in Mosquito that night and I stepped out upon the security of land. Well, there it is. You know as much about it as I do. I don’t think there is a shadow of a doubt but that, here in Southern California channels there exists an unknown species of great sea creatures.

A couple more newbie questions.
1. Are we going to fish live bait, and if yes, do we need to prepare some live bait holder on kayak?
2. Are wet/dry suit recommended, and if yes, is dry suit that is comfortable here too hot there?
Thanks,

Just over three weeks! Anybody got any more questions?
Bring cash for beer tabs, big fish jackpot, fish filleting, and tips. Google "Islander Sportfishing" and read any of the reports or reviews from all the way back to the early 00's and the one thing that gets mentioned over and over is how hard the crew works to make everything go smoothly. :smt004

Sorry if this was asked already - what about parking there? And general logistics - I arrive (address?), unload, go find the boat (where?), load (I heard crew is very helpful) - do I leave car there or park somewhere?
Also, anybody interested in carpool? - I'm in Redwood City area.
-
All good questions, Sebast!
We'll be leaving out of Fishermans Landing, 2838 Garrison St. You can park in the lot there for $8 or $10 bucks a day. None of us has ever had a problem with break ins there.
When you get there you'll more than likely see some of us staged right at the entrance to the docks. Just unload your gear and stage it with the rest.
No need to go find the boat. When it's time to board we will put all of our gear in these big carts then members of the crew will come and notify us and we can start humping stuff down to the boat....or if it's like last year, the crew will come and grab all of the gear and pretty much do everything.
I recommend getting there a bit early. There's three or four nice tackle shops within walking distance of the landing. Also, be sure to grab some food before boarding. They don't feed us Friday night. There's usually an hour or so between boarding the boat and departure to tie up any loose ends.
I think it was Tong who is in Cupertino and looking to carpool.
Good stuff. Feel free to post up any more questions, answering them just gets me even more stoked!

We left our rigs in the Motel parking lot for a small fee a few years ago which is walking distance to the boat. We get there a day early for some pre fishing shananigans! :smt007

I mostly use ringed live bait hooks. Sizes 2 - 4/0.
I'm bringing 4oz and 6oz cannonballs or torpedo weights for my dropper loops.
For my bait rig (1oz egg sinker directly above the hook) I like to put just a bit of space between my sinker and hook. I felt like I missed some bites before I made this adjustment. I first started tying little mini-Carolina rigs, using a barrel swivel then a 2" leader to the hook. An easier way to do this is to either us a Carolina Keeper or rubber core egg sinkers. I used the rubber core egg sinkers last year and I think I prefer that method.
I want to bring some 30lb flouro....but 25 is so much cheaper!
Also bringing my own supply of frozen squid this year.
I may bring a few rockfish jigs just in case I happen to be on the boat for a RF drift....although it's unlikely.
Will post more later. Gotta run to a meeting right now.

Thanks for that D! I think that's a pretty good plan, and with a ton of bait on board think it makes sense to use it! Btw you can use a perfection loop to make a live bait hook work just like a ringed hook, without having to purchase the ring. It's also a ridiculously easy knot to learn :smt044 ChuckE showed me years ago when he I think won the Paradise Butt Hunt :smt006 Then learned how to use the dropper loop last time on the Islander, so i'll probably do some of that as well again. I was trying to remember the name of the jigs they use in SoCal that are like bass jigs, but bigger with a wire guard on them. Basically made for tossing directly into snaggy stuff. Hoping to pick some up when we get there.

Can you charge batteries on the boat?

yes, there is a plug in the state rooms, but bring a power strip

Just weedless jigs, as far as I know.

You can also use a wide gap hook to make a weedless sluggo. I have two big sluggos rigged like this from two years ago that I never used. Will probably use 'em on this trip for awhile...if there's any kelp around this year.

I have some of those that I never use. When I get home I'll see what size they are. I got them from Bass Pro. If they're the size you need you can have them.

Also, if anyone needs Salas 6x jigs let me know. I have a gang of 'em.
-
Whatever size is the largest basically, hoping for bigger than one ounce, more like 1.5oz probably a 6/0 or 7/0 hook?
-
Is there a chance at Yellowtail? If so is bait best for them, or those Salas jigs is that for them as well? I bought a Shimano wax wing last time, but never actually used it and gave it to Andy :smt005

Haven't heard anything from the Islands yet (I don't really look), but last year there were a good bit of 5-12lb YTs caught. If I remember right it was a pretty even mix between bait caught and ones caught on artificials. I caught three smaller ones on bait and lost something that was just ripping line off of my Revo Toro. I lost that one, though, because I was too lazy to tie another leader and had my hook tied straight to my braid. On the first 100 yard or so run my hook just popped out. :smt010 :smt011 :smt013
Actually, it was more like :smt013 :smt010 :smt011

Of the dozen or so that I witnessed being caught last year, only one came on iron, the rest on bait. Late on the last day, I resorted to slow trolling dead anchovies because that's all that was left, and ended up catching 2 rats doing that.
-Allen
-
Right on, thanks for that info! Think that I'll plan on bait then for targeting them if they happen to come around. Few flashy irons for backup as well.

By the way, I'd like to take room F again, the small one on the aft port side. I'm a horrible snorer (will have ear plugs though) and wouldn't want to subject anyone to sleeping in the same room as me if possible.

As far as I know. I'm 6'3" and haven't been in a short bed on the Islander yet. They are a little low, with some bunks stacked 3 high. For this trip, we'll have 2 per room.

The rooms don't tend to be so crowded. With 3 bunks, but only 2 people, it leaves a whole bunk for gear.

I'm probably going to fish Thursday morning. Can't miss an opportunity to fish La Jolla and we gotta find a way to pass the day, right? Anyone else?
:smt007 :smt007 :smt007
This is gonna be a super long haul for me so I'm looking to cram as much fishing in as possible. Right now my plan is to stop in Monterey and fish 5/28-29 and then head south and fish La Jolla and/or Ensenada 5/30-6/1. Anybody down to chase YT before the boat leaves?
If there's a hot bite going on I may fish Thursday morning....but I'm usually in chill mode pre-departure.

All I've heard is that there is some squid starting to show up around Catalina and that the bait receivers there are selling live squid bait. It would be awesome to fish live squid again!

The Pursuit picked up 70 YT at Catalina yesterday and another boat picked up 73.

I will google but thought will also ask here - do I need heavier gear or anything else for YT ?

Heavier than what? If you have 30# class gear, you'll be fine.

On the boat, I use 30 pound line...fish can't take the boat for a sleigh ride. :smt001 If it breaks off, I use 40 pound. Like Allen said, 30 pound should be OK. You will probably go on a sleigh ride until the fish tires out. When it does begin to come up, it will be in a circling pattern, much like tuna.
-
Thanks Allen. I use 65 braid to 30 lb topshot and/or leader, with MH rods and 15 lb drag reels, seems I should be fine.

Here's a little tip for ya.
After the first morning almost all of our paddles will be stacked under the kayak rack by the bait tanks. Many paddles look the same. Many paddles are the same. In 2013 there was a three way mix-up of bent shaft Werner Shunas and I'm still not positive I got mine back. The next year I blacked out one of the "E"s in Werner and that helped a little, but not much. What I did last year worked much better. I put a couple of wraps of colored electric tape around the shaft and that worked perfect. Was easy to grab both halves of my paddle out of the mountain of other paddle halves.
:smt006
-
I plan on labeling everything I have one way or another. Might just get some colored luggage tags for all my bags and stuff. Lots of prep to do!!!
-
Well reality just kicked in for me this morning. 9 days till lift off. Just got all my dive gear together. Can wed come soon enough??
-
Is there still one opening available or does the thread title need to be fixed? Or is there another non-kayaker onboard?
-
The fact that nobody wants Bloodbath's spot is a sign that he needs to unbail and get on this boat!

Heard a rumor that he may have a new job. Probably wouldn't look to good if he requested time off right now. :smt005

Yup. I'm probably not going to be able to fish before next Wednesday so I started getting all my gear ready yesterday afternoon. Found a few Rapalas I bought for my Mexico trip. I'm gonna pull a Pat and drag one around whenever I'm on my way back to the boat. :smt004

YEEEEEEEEE.... Whats the wager gonna be this year??? Whos in??

IMO, everyone should get in on the jackpot. From 2014 - Raydon won day 1 with a barely legal halibut, Kris won day 2 with a nice sized Calico, and Ruben won with a monster goat.

ONE MORE WEEK!!!!!! :smt007
-
Memorizing
-
Dan Hernandez did a show at San Clemente last week. They picked up a pretty big halibut and some medium sized YT to go with the usual sheeps, whites, and calicoes.
So far this season we have had good fishing for both calico bass and yellowtail. The past three years most of the fishing we did this time of year was for rock fish, but not this year. Catalina Island has been kicking out large size calico bass and yellowtail too. San Clemente Island has even larger calico bass and bigger schools of yellowtail.
He will be shooting a show at SCI on June 6th. We should try to find them and get in on the TV footage.
-
Im gonna shoot one!!!! :smt007

Flyline live bait, dropper loop live bait to the bottom, or yoyo or fast retrieve jigs.
-
Flyline live bait, dropper loop live bait to the bottom, or yoyo or fast retrieve jigs.
And be prepared to do all 3. Often times I'll troll around with one bait fly lined with no weight and one dropper loop trolling bait deeper. If I come across a fishy patch with lots of bait around, I'll troll a big circle around it, and depending on what I feel like, might reel in the dropper loop and start yoyo-ing, while leaving the fly lined bait out.
Keep in mind that yoyo-ing an iron is different than jigging. When yoyo-ing, you're dropping down (to the bottom) and just reeling it up as fast as you can. Think of it as vertical trolling, working the whole water column on the retrieve.
-Allen
-
Also have a bait rig ready. Simply a 1oz egg sinker above your hook, fishing squid strips or live squid if we can be so lucky. I modify mine. See below.
More rubber core sinkers are on my still-to-get list.

Kinda weak. I was hoping the crew would get a chance to scout things out on this weekend's trip.

I would add that when you get a bite, keep reeling for a count of 3 before setting the hook. This also goes for bait too. This is what Kevin Nekada taught me when he guided Adrienne and I last year in February at La Jolla.
Is there ice available if I use a fish bag on my kayak? Does anyone ever go offshore a ways in search of tuna cuz it seems like there is a good chance of yellowfin being around too?
Is there fish processors at the docks where we launch?
-
Is there ice available if I use a fish bag on my kayak?
- There is an ice machine in the galley, should be enough to throw a few scoops into your game bag.-
Does anyone ever go offshore a ways in search of tuna cuz it seems like there is a good chance of yellowfin being around too?
- Yes, but AFAIK nobody from NCKA has ever caught a YFT at SCI.
Is there fish processors at the docks where we launch?
- Yup
-
If you don't want to bring your game bag you can always just radio the skiff to come and pick up your fish and put them in the fish hold.
-
Does anyone ever go offshore a ways in search of tuna cuz it seems like there is a good chance of yellowfin being around too?
I think we would discourage one from shooting too far offshore in search of tuna. It's more of a safety thing for the captain and crew to be able to keep track of the kayak out on the water. But you could ask the captain and see what he thinks.

Polepole's tip of the day. Bring a tube of neosporen and apply generously to your hand like lotion every night. You know those annoying nicks and cuts you get while fishing. Multiply that by like 5X as you'll be going at it all day long 3 days in a row.

Bring your wheels if you got 'em! They'll help loading the big boat go a little faster. Stash 'em in your car when you're done.

I've heard some rumblings about live bait availability for the trip? Juliet at the Islander says she's not heard of any problems. I checked the bait barge reports and looks like a steady supply for the past few weeks, both anchovies and sardines. Here's the Everinham Bro's bait report for the past few:

Bushy, that was me, just some guy at Fishermans Warehouse that said there was somewhat of a shortage a few weeks ago, and that squid was difficult to locate. But glad to hear the dines and chovies are in stock at least! :smt007

I believe 3 prong is fine. At least I don't recall having any issues with my strip. Worse case is we yank out the 3rd prong!

Anyone considering returning home via I-5 might want to take Hwy 99 to Hwy 152 instead, or at least check the status of repairs.

Hey folks, I'm replacing Raydon for this trip due to his untimely last minute family issues. I wish him the best.
I thought I'd give a heads up. Last time I went on this boat I had a blast, but was very shocked to watch the deck hands hose down my beautiful new reels with salt water! Maybe I'm being naive, but I was blown away how much your reels are "power washed"with salt water. When I first saw this, I thought they used fresh water, then I asked if that's fresh water? The deck hand just laughed and said "of course not, we pump straight from the ocean" Silly me I guess, but this time I'm bringing some gallon ziplock bags and heavy rubber bands to cover my reels. Just thought you'd like to know in case you feel the same way I do about it. See ya all tomorrow night.

Yes quite a few reels and rods got the hose down...but...it was real rough seas. The kayak rack broke and most of the kayaks were stored on deck all the way to the bow. It was real tough going for the deck hands as way more than half the "guests" were seasick puking all over the boat sides and deck. We weren't even allowed to go beyond the back of the bait station unless a crewman was there. Good thing we are basically going east to west and back as the uphill slog from Cedros was BRUTAL!
ps I am bringing about 100 rubber gloves in case you want to wrap a reel or two.

South swell today. Was told return trip may be a bit bumpy if the south swell continues.
-
All loaded, ready to go!
How's traffic? (hopefully shenanigans can still type) ;)
-
It's going down at the Dolphin with local antics rivaling Shelter Cove.
-
Many fish tacos and beers have been consumed.
-
This is not type of traffic I'm worried about, but I'm very happy for you guys!
Of course borscht with all relevant *stuff* is no par..though, wait a minute - it's damn good too.
Distance is a problem though
-
I'm not sure what that means, but traffic was normal So Cal traffic.
-
South swell today. Was told return trip may be a bit bumpy if the south swell continues.
Where you staying Howard??

Goodluck out there fellas. I know someone is going to catch something nice. Yellowtail opportunity is definitely there. Can't wait to see all your guys reports and pics. Have fun all

Yeah it was a rough trip back, but I'm talking about a daily thing just washing down the decks and the rods along with it. I saw it several times on the one trip I've done. I cringed overtime I watched it... I'm just stating what I witnessed is all. I've got my bags and bands. :smt002
-
Great benefit of early June trip is not having to wait for parking spot to become available well before trip start time. :smt007 A month later, it's freak out time and speculating on which spot will open up and get to it before someone else does. :smt012

Haven't been on the Islander, but the 3 trips I've taken out of San Diego, every boat did what jonesz mentioned...washing down the deck along with everyone's rod and reels with saltwater. I just figured that was the norm.

Leaving now ... Think I'll make it?

"This is the image on Bing.com today, "Giant Kelp Forest near San Clemente Island, California" - right near where the Islander is doing our first kayak fishing trip of the season! A 3.5 day trip with the Nor-Cal Kayakers. 30 Yellowtail caught on the first day, they are having a blast in beautiful flat-calm weather. We will post some pictures when the boat gets back..."

......as well it should be. The word is EPIC!!! Finally for the first time in my life, there were YT around, and willing to bite. You did have to work for them and make sure all your knots are good (thank you, JoneZ). These fish pull HARD!!!
Sorry I am only going to tease cause Im burnt. Best story might be Andy diving in to savfe DPShim's rod that he was using. Unattended, it got bit and over the rail it went, followed in seconds by Andy who not only caught the rod about 8 feet down, but surfaced fighting the fish. The deckhands were amazed. Me too!!!
Lotsa stories and pix coming. Everyone had a blast and behaved themselves. Once again NCKA in top form!

There were 90+ YTs landed.
I caught 7, had at least another half a dozen short bites, and saw two 25lbish YTs both battling for my sardine. One of 'em finally grabbed it and screamed right into the rocks and broke me off.
My biggest weighed 13lbs bled and gutted.

I'm sitting here reminising about this trip, going through all these great photos. I had fun. It was my second time yakfishing SCI from the Islander. The 2013 trip was memorable, but no yellowtail...only 1 wsb and 1 thresher were caught among our group. Plus a ton of calicos, sheeps, and whitefish. Which are incredibly hard fighters--much harder than your standard rockfish. Don't get me wrong, it was a blast!
But THIS time...the calicos, sheeps, and whitefish were merely annoying distractions from the hot yellowtail bite. I think the previous ~10yrs of NCKA trips to SCI tallied a dozen yt total. We caught over 90!! We moved repeatedly and each time we found some yt. Most were caught by flylining live sardines.
Running 2 rods, I usually had a small weight on one line to keep them from tangling. You just feed out some line, then engage the clicker...and hold on. These things hit like a freight train and violently rip line off the spool and the clicker screams. It's wild. Then you ponder for a split-second if you should engage the reel...because once you do, it'll damn near yank the rod from your hands!
Over the 3-day trip I had about a dozen hookups and landed 5 yt from about 8-14lbs. And lucky enough to win the Day 3 jackpot...which I gratefully donated back to the crew. Even when they handed me the envelope Monday morning, I still wasn't sure if I had really won or not... :smt005
Oh, I also spent some time looking for halibut. And playing with calicos on the wash rocks & got a new PB @ 7lbs. Food was tasty. Even better than last time. Crew was wonderful. Very helpful group of guys. They work their asses off too. I'm so happy we all got to go and experience a hot yellowtail bite. Thanks for being such good friends!
The first day didn't start out so fast, for me. I got snagged repeatedly and broke my line a few times, before finally hooking up and catching...a...grass rockfish! :smt013 In the moment, I was thinking "I came all the F the way down here to catch a GD grassy?!" :smt005

They were just getting broken in. You still had the whole phase of cutting off the leg part and making Xtra Tuff shoes. Many years of life left in those boots. Ahhhhh ... but the stories they could tell!!!

Thought those were Rob's. I gave them to Otobe today. Maybe Otobe should take a pic so that the correct person could claim them.

I've seen this exact rod in action hooked up to a 20lbish tuna and it totally lacked the backbone needed to turn the fish. The rod would just bend over and you couldn't turn the fish. I would imagine it would be the same on a 20lb YT running for the kelp, but not sure.
Damn, still envy all you dudes going on this trip...its gonna be a blast!!
I caught all of my YTs on my Shimano Trevala/Penn Spinfisher V4500L combo. What a blast.

Howard dropped off a set of boots at my shop yesterday. Prior to reading the lost and found post I noticed the garden produced a couple volunteer tomato plants and I had nowhere to put them. Bushy, You'll get em back in a few months after the plants stop producing.... :smt003

Fish scented boots, those tomato plants are gonna produce trophy harvest this year :smt003

Thread Snatch!! Allen, if those are the same cherry toms that were growing from the other place, I am still growing those from the seeds I dried out. The plants get over 7ft high!! and produce up to Nov!!
Thanks Again!!

7 ft??
those are big boots to fill.
thanks Allen!

So no one accidently went home with a size 13 like new pair of NRS wetsuit booties? I guess they walked off the boat on their own.

Kind of like how the Islander crew knew right away where my filet knife was, but had I not gone back and asked for it then they were keeping. BS :smt011

I left my bibs, jacket and towel in the cabin on a hook behind the door. Pretty sure they would not find it before we left, but if they did and you have them please let me know. Thanks!

2.5 day passengers take note! Keep track of your stuff!

BTW - I'll ask about your guys' stuff next week when I'm down there. Or you could always give them a call.

Yeah I'm also mad , lost's a big yellowtail on the back side of the Island so if anyone happen to find it , I want it back size 15 plus . :smt002

Here was my take on the off loading. While disembarking the deckhands gave us a rolling cart number. We were to direct all our stuff to that cart number as it went over the rail and the deckhands placed those items in the correct cart.....worked like a charm. The only thing that went awry was that when the carts reached the unloading zone many people chipped in helping others unload them. Things were tossed and stacked in different areas. A good way to handle it would be everyone unload their own stuff from the carts. Just a thought.
ps I had Bright Yellow Caution Tape tied to all my bags/etc and those were easy to spot.
-
I had absolutely no problem with any of my stuff. Take care of your things and it wont disappear. No ones fault but your own. My 2 cents. :smt006
