Post by: BigJim on April 05, 2016, 02:50:56 PM
Somehow lost my mind yesterday and signed up for the Santa Cruz Half Marathon on Sunday.

I haven't ran more than 3 miles since the Nike Women's Half Marathon in October.  :smt044

Hope I don't die.  :smt009

If you happen to be in SC and see me lumber by gimme a shout out, high five or cold beer...all equally welcome.

 :smt003 :smt004

All joking aside...looking forward to running this race again in Joel's memory...it is one of my favorites:

That's about right!!

When I first started running I fractured my foot cuz I was running so heavy and hard...now I try and take little, light, small, dainty strides.

 :smt003

Looks a little funny but works for me.

Thanks for the kind words guys...

Realized that this will be my 6th time running this Half Marathon...

1. 2009 with my buddy Miguel when training for the Royal Victoria Marathon with Team in Training
2. 2010 for Team Margie (very cold and wet year)
3. 2011 with my wife Ana (very hot and sunny year)
4. 2013
5. 2014 with my friend Tracy whose young son Connor died from Melanoma
6. This Sunday

If anyone ever wants to do a Half Marathon this is a great one to do...beautiful course along the water, not that many hills, easy to measure distance (west cliff for 1st 3 miles, then a loop along the bluffs in Wilder Ranch, then west cliff again for the last 3 miles), and a finish right on Cowells beach with bars and restaurants etc right there.

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Had a great time yesterday!

Woke up to the sound of rain falling and for a split second I wanted to just stay in bed and say forget it.  :smt005

But then I remembered that some people would love to be able to get out and run and that it would be super selfish and lazy to let a little rain stop me.  :smt001

Rained the whole time, but not super hard and it was beautiful out.

The ocean and the fog and the Wilder ranch bluffs and the memory of Mooch kept me running at a decent pace the whole way through.

I was very happy with how I did on the hills, and was able to finish strong with a time of 2:16.

My fastest half was just under 2 hours back when I was training and running a lot, so for not training at all I am pretty stoked with how I did.

Met up with some good friends after for a few beers and then spent the rest of the day at home on the couch chilling.

 :smt004

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

great job Jim.  For no training, that is.   :smt005

For real tho, no mileage and to go out and run 13.1 at that pace in the rain is very bad ass.  Mental >> physical, every time.

So if my math is correct, 2 mins of apneic with 5 min of breath up periods = 7 min cylces for 136 min = 19.4 cycles in 13.1 miles  followed by 8 beer sampler .....Yup I agree... Mental over physical. :smt003

Good going brother Jim. The flight of beers look good, the metal is dope, and I bet you got a kiss from the ladies.
