General Fishing Tips / Re: Fishing bag
« on: July 18, 2018, 09:01:27 PM »
everyone stores their tackle differently...but I kind of went the el cheapo route...

I got one of those marine grade tackle bags from ebay that has a waist strap (like an oversized fanny pack). Then fill it up with flambeau's or plano's, and then tether/strap it around my seat. When I need to change out lures, I just swing it around onto my lap.

But I've been getting more minimalistic these days and now just store my stuff in a big PVC zip bag which is then secured with bungee cord and hooks off to my side.

Okay- great. An other question if I may- how do you guys know if you're getting down to your targeted depths? I know how many pulls to let out, but should I just be looking at the angle of my line coming off my rod tip to guesstimate how deep I'm getting down?

Im pretty sure there's alot of ways to do this but this is what works for me with a DD6 or banana weights...

Say you're trolling about 2-2.5mph and you're line out is about about 45 degrees angle into the water. If you want to go 30 ft down, let out 60 ft of line. If your pull is 2' ft (~ distance from spool to 1st eye), then let out 30 pulls. If 1' ft pull, then 60 pulls.

Can anyone recommend one of those tracking devices that people put on their bikes in case they get stolen?
I want one for my Hobie. I leave it on my car often, although I use two heavy duty chains and locks as well as a cable on the amas. But in case something happens, it would be great to have a tracking device inside it.

Are there any I should look at?
Thanks,
Andrew
I thought about the "tile" myself. I use it on my key chains, but don't really know if it's require the phone signal or not...!?

+1 on the Tile. They have a sport version which is also waterproof.

Hobie Kayaks / Re: 180 Pedal Drive Upgrade: low-tech vs high-tech
« on: July 09, 2018, 09:19:55 PM »
This is a great upgrade! I have an 180 too and the long handles always get in my way all the time, usually hitting my feet. Thanks for posting!

Haven't been to Big Sur in a while but Limekiln is a great little spot. Nice lings there! Just be careful of the surf launch if conditions suck. It's also a steep beach and if there are waves, it can get hairy.

Looks like a really light yak. Wonder if this technique works on heavier yaks.

And the victim also happens to be the commissioner of SMCHD. Maybe she's should also be contacted...

Some of these guys charge full speed ahead before leaving the jaws...well aware that there's yakkers and it's a no wake zone. Seems like these guys think they own the harbor. Stay safe friends

Use Code: PERFECTDAY

Works on stuff that's normally excluded from discounts like Hobie or Shimano. Just got myself a Trevala rod.

Welcome GooganDave. If you're new to kayak fishing, you could start off with a farmer john wetsuit 3mm, and then upgrade to a drysuit when you get more serious about it.

Places to Launch and Camp / Re: Tomales Bay launch on west side?
« on: June 23, 2018, 03:48:51 PM »
Thanks guys! FWIW, I saw a bunch of baitfish jumping out of the water near white gulch. Probably some bigger halibut moving in soon.

Update on my Tomales trip...went out this past Thurs and I didn't get alot of bites. But as I was making my way back in, I managed to land this 26" butt south of Hog. Still learning the topography of this bay though.

Thanks for all the tips. Hoping to go back again soon.
