General Talk / Re: Make fish fertilizer out of your carcasses

Fish fertilizer is the best...gotta have a strong nose though. I've also been making seaweed fertilizer which I think could do wonders alongside fish fertilizer.

HMB is pretty easy for launching...just watch out for boats and shallow reef areas if you venture outside the harbor.

I strap mine to the front handle and let it dangle off to the side...also doesn't get in the way of my paddle stroke.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Hook sharpening
« on: September 30, 2022, 08:38:45 AM »
I used to sharpen my big river and no escape hooks, but noticed it takes some of the coating off and would make them more susceptible to rust over time. I now only use stainless steel hooks.

I got some from VMC, finally. But they are small. I’ll be in the lookout for the bigger size. Out of the box, they  aren’t as sharp as Gamakatsu.
I’m not sure how sharp straight VMC hooks are, but I do use hooks from a company that partners with them as well as Mustad, which are pretty good for SS hooks.

Truly inspirational...I remembered when he attempted this journey last year and had to cancel after 5 days. He got knock down and got up again.

Seems like this company is now selling fear… :smt003

How so? Seems like a useful feature to me.

A bit of an inside joke for OP :smt001 but I really do think it's useful and will get better with future iterations

General Talk / Re: Aluminum reel corrosion question
« on: September 14, 2022, 08:46:38 AM »
I think acid (vinegar) is bad for anodizing..... Ounce of prevention says always spray some corrosion X (the thin kind) on a rag, and wipe down your reel after every use and fresh water rinse. Then buff/dry with a clean rag.  Dont let the corrosion X get on your line.

Bushy
good call on the corrosion x

Mothers aluminum polish would probably shine that right up. Use a microfiber cloth to rub it on, then keep rubbing til it is clean.

going to give this stuff a try...thanks!

Bingo.
Just did a web search for anodized aluminum polish..
I’m curious though if I’d need it for my Avet.. Is it common for them to get like that? Mine is 2nd season and never been serviced. Looks like new.
it's not common...the anodized coating is supposed to protect against corrosion, but I've been rough on my reel over the last few years and want to prevent anymore corrosion from spreading.

Maybe barkeeper’s friend? Cheap and works great on stainless steel. Mix powder with a bit of water and use toothbrush to rub paste on surface. Then wash with fresh water

I thought about using that until I saw on their website that they didn't recommend it on anodized aluminum. Probably because it could be abrasive on the anodized coating...

General Talk / Aluminum reel corrosion question
« on: September 13, 2022, 10:23:56 AM »
I’m noticing a lot of corrosion on the finishing of my Avet reel and was wondering if anyone here has tried to re-anodized their reels or know of a place that can do this. DIY involves messing around with acid and electrolysis...and while I’m not too thrilled about getting chemical burns, I'd be willing to give it a try if it's somewhat easy to do. Already tried a vinegar bath, but didn't do a thing. Appreciate your suggestions.

General Talk / Re: Waders for surf fishing

Waders has its pros/cons but I do wear them when surf fishing. Quite important to wear a wader belt along with it. But I’ve heard stories of people getting dragged into the surf wearing them.

damn sucks...think we've been there one way or another. I have my DR and ball stoled in my front hatch for launch/landing. And a knife on your PFD...always. This post is a good reminder

Nice job on the salmon! Love those bites when you’re going back in. Make sure to pinch your swimbait jig head barb when you gotta salmon on board…just in case DFG is around
