I’m curious how they expect, say 50 kayakers, to launch at the side kayak launch ramp.  It’s tiny.  Smaller than a 2-car driveway width.   And with the limited parking at Oyster point, I’m guessing he doesn’t expect more than 15-20 people to attend this event.

Do you think this is a scam?

Bluestar,

I have 3 kayaks, an 13' outback, and two Crescent ultralite kayaks (11' and 13'), and a 14' portabote.  If you're having issues deciding on what to buy, then I highly suggest you try demo/renting kayaks.   It may cost you $100-200 to rent three kayaks from CCK, MBK, or the kayak spot down in Moss, but its highly worth it.

If you and your family are available to come over to the Easy Bay (Richmond area), then we can setup a time for you and your kids to try out my kayaks.   Stability in the open ocean is huge in the open, especially once you're loaded with gear.  Your kids sound like proper water dogs but they're have a easier time fishing with rod/reel on top of the kayak rather than in the water.

Monterey Breakwater is an easy launch.  I kayaked and dove there many times with no issue.  Del Monte beach is also an easy area to launch.

Pigeon Point launch is easy EXCEPT during a high tide, south west swell, and the stairs are horrible after a long day.

Bean Hollow can be very technical.  Some days its calm flat, but because that beach is steep, I've seen large waves break into barrels.  Conditions here change from morning to afternoon quickly.

HMB is easy to launch inside the harbor, however, the Jaws getting out can be very intimidating.  Its a narrow pass with boats going in and out.  Need to keep your head on a swivel and judge when to go in and out.

I'd practice inside the Bay with your kids until you get the system down.  Loading, unloading, rigging, paddling, peddling, entry/reentry, etc.  There's plenty of good launches nearby you (Coyote, Oyster, Seal Park, etc)

If you happen to be in the North Bay, Anna's Fish Market in Petaluma is my favorite market.

At San Pablo Yacht club, there’s a kayak launch dock to the right of the clubhouse.  We used to run amateur NCKA events pre-Covid years.  You can launch directly into the marina and no worry about a mud walk.

There’s another beach 2/3s between Molate beach and SP yacht club.  Rocky trail going straight to the water.  No mud walk, shallow but ok to launch.  Just south of one of the chevron piers.  Questionable parking, you may find broken glass by your car.

Otherwise, all of these spots will produce fish plugging from shore.  No need for a kayak.

Hard to read but I think Dicks in Daly City has them.  Check their website.

The pleasant hill concord location had a ton.
I’m working in that area if you need me to pick up some and bring it back with me to Berkeley or SF.

I have a local guy that’s been making my snares for me.
Nickname is Sofaking and he gives me a good deal.  He’s in Pinole.
Let me know if you want some.

40lb should be fine.  Make sure your guides are smooth and check for line wear.
I use 50lb Big Game Trilene.  Reeled in plenty of doubles and once a triple at Ocean Beach without issue.

There’s a handful that can make it that far into the harbor.  You’ll have more success closer to the jetty and outside.

Another easy place for your son would be Bolinas Lagoon.  Go on a low tidal change and it should be easy paddling.  Similar situation, not a ton of crab but some are in there.  But at least there’s no boats to worry about.

Any PA is nearly impossible to car top, its recommended to trailer if you want to save your back.
The hobie outback is probably the heaviest model I'd consider to cartop.  The 2014-2018s are about 55-60ish lbs and the newer ones are pushing 65-70 lbs.  I had both models and cartop them on my Tacoma with camper shell.  Lifting without much issues unless I have a very long day on the water.

I'm not sure what type of fish you're targeting.  Salmon, tuna, etc that require lots of trolling and moving, then you're probably somewhere between an Outback or Revolution.

If you need deck space, then an Outback or PA is your choices.

If you prefer lightweight, then is Compass or Passport.

My recommending is to demo a few and see which one works for you.  If you're buying new, then I think some places will credit the rental costs into a new purchase price.

Antioch pier is always loaded with stripers.  That’s my go-to for kids with low attention spans.  Always possible to hook a sturgeon there as well.

You can also take your dad beach snaring for crabs after this Saturday.
