Fish Talk / Re: Official GWS Thread
« on: November 23, 2022, 08:59:31 AM »
Lovers point is very sharky . Many sightings in that area. I had an encounter there many moons ago.

The first documented fatal GWS attack in CA happened at Lover’s Cove in the 1950’s. Detail of the event with a couple postmortem pictures (not for the squeamish):

On a lighter note, in August 1899, five out of six Japanese fishermen were killed in Monterey Bay by a basking shark … yup, a basking shark. The thing wasn’t trying to eat them, it was just really pissed off because the Japs speared it, as if it was a whale. Oops! Short article:

... iron duck says it floats and supports 250lbs in the water ...

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not seeing it. I looked at the mfgr website, the board is 72 x 16 x 1.75 inches, or 2016 cubic inches. It’s not actually 2016 cu in because the board has a bunch of holes for carry handles and it is tapered on the end, not actually rectangular. If it was a solid rectangle to the dimensions given, it would be 2016 cu inches, it’s not, so it is something less than that. But let’s go with the number 2016.

There are 1728 cu inches in a cubic foot. A cubic foot is 7.48 gals of water. A gal of water is 8.3 lbs. See where this is going? To float 250 lbs you need to displace about 4 cu feet of water. Per the dimensions on the website, that board just isn’t 4 cu ft of roto-molded plastic. It’s more like 1.17 cf feet, so it will only float something more like 77 lbs (minus the 16 lbs of the board weighs, so something closer to 61 lbs). Now take into account the tapered end and the holes for carry handles and I doubt you get 50 lbs of buoyancy out of that board.

Yup! The spec sez it has 250 lbs of “float capacity” but I’m not seeing how it could do that if there is not enough to it to displace 4 cu ft of water. It doesn’t have any freeboard so all it can displace is it’s own volume.

Why is it there is never a math professor around when you need one?  :smt102 :smt003

Theres a reason why you "buy local" for attorney services, not the least of which is reducing travel time expense.  For this client that would be viewed as material.

Travel expenses are nothing compared to the overall cost of a divorce.

It appears there is no point in commenting on the err with Crash's flawed logic for using a local family law lawyer, unless you think it would have value for your friend. If you do, let me know, or I can PM you the info. Don't see myself posting it just to argue with an idiot, tho I do realize the entertainment value in it.  :smt044

#1 – it is Mr. Brotis to you.

#2 – to answer your question, maybe.

#3 – you have a PM. Hopefully you can read because there are no pictures in it.  :smt003

ETA: I don't have an opinion on lawyers.  :smt003

Sigh.

You can safely ignore almost all of this.  Hiring out of county attorneys bar none is particularly terrible advice.

Ignorant, or a lawyer? There are only two options.

One of us is one, and the other of us is the other.

In the interest of helping the original poster helping his friend, can you tell us why you think getting a divorce lawyer from a county other than the county where the case is filed, is in anyway a “particularly terrible advice”?  :dontknow:

Sorry to hear your friend has to go thru this. Family law lawyering is unlike any other type of lawyering, it emanates from the bowls of the deepest and most satanic cesspool. The corruption in California Superior Court, Family Law Division, will gag a maggot across the street.

(1) Almost no one needs a lawyer for divorce in California. The whole system is set up to be DIY.  Every aspect of how custody is shared, property is divided, and support, if any, is paid is codified (already existing law). The “law” is fair, no one gets over on anyone, everything is divided equally. The same cannot be said for the lawyering that goes on in family court. There is literally no need for lawyers, but get just one lawyer involved and they can fuck that up quick, and they will, because that is how they justify getting paid in a system that does not require their services lawyering.

(2) Hiring a divorce lawyer is done for reasons of convenience and/or emotion. My advice is to think thru/past both of those reasons and NEVER hire a divorce lawyer in the county where the divorce is being heard. NEVER!!! ALWAYS only lawyer up for a divorce with a lawyer from another county.

If your friend is going to go with a lawyer, I very strongly suggest you point them toward a lawyer you know in the South Bay (Santa Clara Co), or at least for a lawyer from another county. Fwiw, filings are done electronically, lawyer could be anywhere in the state but being close enough to drive to their office would be a good thing.

GWS do not eat people. This is from a recent article someone posted here last week:

In the waters off the coast of Southern California, Lowe says it’s not atypical to see up to 40 juvenile white sharks along a two-mile stretch of beach, interacting with people.

“Today, there were probably a dozen white shark interactions where they swim under the surfer,'' he says. “What you don’t hear about is people not being bitten. We have daily interactions, and they ignore people.

Put another way, if people were on the menu the norm would be daily reports of surfers, swimmers, and kayakers disappearing. Swimmers would be the easiest to eat. We never heard of someone swimming in the ocean and simply disappearing.

Not in love with the "multiple times" nature of the attack.

That shark must like the taste of paddleboard…

Its bullshit, there was not multiple attacks. A young shark was curious about the paddleboard and did a shark version of touching it to see what it was. Now that it knows a paddleboard is not edible it is unlikely to bite another one.

A managed cull of sea lions and white sharks along the coast seems reasonable at this point ...

Shouldn’t have to cull GWS. Their population is artificially inflated due to artificially inflating their food supply, e.g. seals protected by the Marine Mammal Protection boondoggle. Take away their food (seals), the GWS population shrinks to its natural level.

We need to open seals to hunting, again.

For those who still don’t know, sea lions are actually seals, not lions. :smt003

I’m going to keep saying this … we need to open up marine mammals to hunting, again.

Fwiw, that was a little bitty shark bite, probably cute as as hell.  :smt003

General Talk / Re: Heat rash
« on: August 10, 2022, 02:06:06 PM »
It's similar to PME (Poly Morphic Explosion) aka extremely bad heat rash. Read up on PME.

Polymorphic light eruption is the most common form of immunologically mediated photosensitivity dermatoses. Exposure to sunlight in spring or summer results in an irritable rash that resolves within a few days …

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK430886/

Not a lot of sunlight under a wetsuit. Per the NIH, you need direct sunlight for the “explosions”.

Personally, me thinks the rash is fungal in nature. Me also thinks neem oil might be a solution for prevention. Regardless of what causes the rash, neem oil can be used as a treatment. If the rash is fungal, and the butt cream works to prevent it, it may be due to the three petroleum product ingredients smothering the fungus. Pretty sure zinc oxide has no effect on fungus.

Not sure I’d be using butt cream for sunscreen without consideration of other ingredients. Zinc oxide mixed with other UV absorbing chemistry breaks down in sunlight and becomes toxic within a couple hrs. I think sunscreen is generally safe in the sun, don’t know about butt cream.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Waterproof phone cases
« on: August 03, 2022, 11:54:34 AM »
The only thing that helps me is using the side buttons on my Samsung to take the pictures if my phone is wet.  Did Apple ditch buttons on the iPhone?

I have been thinking about your cellphone case quandary. If it were me, I would bite the bullet and get myself a GoPro and keep my cellphone safe in the plastic bag. Besides, if you had a GoPro you would prob do more vids. I’d watch ‘em … maybe.  :smt003

My thinking is a cellphone is actually a pocket computer with a radio-phone app built in. It is not really intended for aquatic exposure. I think I would use the right equipment for the task. In the grand scheme of kayak fishing costs a GoPro is cheap. Btw, this piece of wisdom is coming from someone that does not have a cellphone.
