Looking to get rid of Smoke Hollow propane smoker.
Haven't used for a couple years.
The bottom was rusting out, so I braced it with bricks under burner on my last smoke.  You could do something similar and a new burner would be advisable.

Interior in need of serious degreasing

General Talk / Hobie battery charger electrical connectors
« on: June 27, 2020, 12:58:07 PM »
I have the Hobie battery and battery charging system. It works really well. As I have multiple kayaks and FFs I want to be able to use the Hobie charger with my other 12 volt FF batteries. I'm not willing to pay what Hobie wants for another charger - or for the connectors needed to work with the charger. For just the connectors Hobie wants about $30.  I can't seem to find an alternate source for the connectors. Does anyone know the specific name of this type of connector or another source for them. If this type of connector has a specific name I can better do a Web search. Thanks

General Talk / Swim bladder deflator
« on: October 23, 2019, 08:11:13 PM »
I thought that if you pierced a swim bladder it could cause regulation problems, infections, etc, and the fish tend to die.

A well know local guide was posting and recommending this. What do you think?

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie Compass Loader - rudder protector
« on: October 04, 2019, 11:41:55 AM »
Hey FYI

While I wish Hobie had given more forethought to a few minor things, I'm really liking my 2019 Compass. By far my biggest concern has been loading and unloading the Compass. Yes, its lighter in weight, but definitely more awkward to handle than my Revo 13. Its difficult to tilt it up or drop it down without the ground contacting the undermounted rudder. Hobie is addressing this and has come out with a Compass specific rudder protector. I thought Hobie would charge an arm and leg for it, but, surprisingly its only $30  Definitely a must if you want to protect your $2,000+ investment.
I didn't see the part listed on the Hobie site. I believe the part # is 81711000

For Sale / Cobra Marauder for Sale with extras
« on: June 17, 2019, 10:32:21 PM »
The Cobra Marauder was IMO the peak of Cobra Kayaks. Shortly after, I believe, they got sold to a New Zealand company and moved there. This was my first kayak. I bought it from original NCKA OG Papa Bill. Currently it is my backup kayak and for when I take friends out.

Its a great, stable fishing and diving platform. Excellent for a larger guy. It's 14' 3" and 31" beam. Reasonably quick. Definitely much faster than the Cobra Fish N Dive.
With two large hatches and one small hatch for stowing gear or camping equipment and two Velcro closure side pockets (for tackle)

There are eight - yes 8 - recessed rod holders. Plus I added two Scotty flush mount bases.  I'll throw in a Scotty Gimbal adapter for a recessed rod holder.
It comes with three replacement recessed rod holders. In case you do a surf roll and you forgot to take out your pole. Happened to me.
There is also a connected pair of Cobra specific scupper hole plugs
Comes with original paddle and seat.
Has fish size ruler graphics on both sides by seat.
Has a Humminbird FF base. Its really on there strong. Papa Bill put it on.  So...… I accumulated a few FFs. Humminbird 560 to 570 series Three of them. One of the heads and one of the transducers may be bad. I want to be up front about that.  They got mixed together so I'm not 100% sure which is which.
I simply do not have the time to go to the local lake and sort it out. I'd rather spend my limited OTW time doing some serious catching. I also have an older portable FF that I used briefly until I got another FF. It uses those old style large lattern batteries, but you could replace them with some AA packs .  I know that without the Marauder, I am not going to use these. So, I want to include them in the package.

The kayak is solid although not pretty. Unless you have caught plenty of fish on her like I have.
Its has always been stored indoors
The bottom is scuffed up with some rear keel wear from beach launches. Currently there is Gorilla Tape along the keel as added protection. I can remove it if you are a serious buyer.

I trust this kayak. I would not be selling it except I only have room for two kayaks. I've got a new one on the way.

Price for everything $750
Great starter or backup fishing kayak

I'm seeing a lot of enthusiastic kayak fisherman with low post counts who are ramping up for Rock Cod and Salmon season on the big blue.   When I first started I went to a seminar Bushy put on. Not everyone can do that. Not everyone can or will take surf and self-rescue classes before going to sea.  Not everyone will be fortunate enough to quickly hook up with some great mentors, the way I was lucky enough to do. I'm sure there are similar threads on NCKA but they seem to be buried where a new members won't find them. So, I'm starting this for easy viewing

What has made NCKA such a great organization is the naturally supportive atmosphere that members exhibit.  We help each other unload, with difficult beach hauls, launching and landing, netting big fish, righting flipped kayaks and helping cartop your kayak when you are exhausted after a long day OTW. These are the things others have done for me. In NCKA waters, we face more challenges and risks than our warm water cousins. The people who are there for you are the ones you want to go out with on the next trip. So, newer members, if you want to get that invite that is not publicly posted. The one to the hot bite, these are things you should take into consideration.

This post is not about teaching newbs manners. It is about the OG giving some tips that can help others go out and come back safely. Tips and short stories on what experience has taught you and sharing what others have done wrong so that our newer brothers and sisters hopefully don't make the same mistakes.  Sharing the spirit that makes NCKA a great community.

To start,

1. Launching: Many of you have been told to have patience when surf launching. To watch the sets come in and then wait for a lull before going out. This is true. What you don't do is wait 10 - 15 feet off the water's edge, for that lull, and then think you are going to haul your heavy ass boat across the sand, into the water, sit down, stabilize and paddle out to deeper water before the big breakers come. Seen it. Ain't likely to be successful.
At least be at the waters edge with the nose in the water. Personally, I am already floating the boat, calf deep. Keeping nose straight out.  Letting the bow break the small shore washer waves and then pushing forward and hopping in.  Paddling like crazy until well clear of the final, furthest, breakers. This ain't no stroll through the garden. Seen people get a good launch and then take it easy once they are in. Helped some of them rescue their gear from the surf.

2. Launching: Do not go in just deep enough to float the boat and then sit down. Your added weight will effectively ground the boat. If this happens, hop out and stabilize the bow into the next wave. Do not just sit there and think a wave is going to magically come along and float you out to sea. Yeah, this can be hilarious.  Especially when captured on video. Seen it happen. More than once. Didn't end well.

3. Launching and landing:  NEVER have your paddle leashed when launching or landing. You can become entangled and trapped against the boat. Your movements become limited. You cannot move well enough to control the boat when the next wave comes. This is very hard on your knees, not to mention your other body parts when you are trapped between a toppling boat and the sand / rocks.
