General Talk / Happy New Year!
« on: December 31, 2022, 08:03:50 AM »
On the eve of 2023, I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year!   This being the second year of retirement for me, I was able to get my kayak groove on pretty well and had the best fishing year of my life...and I've been at it for a while!  112 days on the water chasing salmon, halibut, crabs, rockfish and a few others.  I learned so much this year, much of that from the posse of guys I got to spend a lot of time on the water with that I met here. I did not get my December halibut that I was trying for, but January still awaits as the ONLY month I have not taken a halibut ever from the bay!!

Cheers!

For Sale / Kayak trailer for BIKE!
« on: November 03, 2022, 02:19:59 PM »
That's right folks, for sale is a Seattle Sports bicycle kayak trailer.  I used this for years with my Revo 13 biking from my house in Alameda to launch at Crown Beach. Living the dream!!

It's got plenty of wear, but no issues and is ready to roll with a new owner as my Revo 16 is a bit much to handle on it, and I'm not getting any younger.... $40 and it's yours or trade me something I can't survive without. PM me. Pickup in Alameda.

General Talk / Handheld VHF antenna extension
« on: September 01, 2022, 01:45:11 PM »
This year I've come to understand just how sensitive our VHF's are to the height of the antenna off the water.  The difference between the radio laying on your hatch for example vs being held overhead is night and day for both reception and transmit.   This has led to me repositioning my vhf as high as possible on my pfd. I'm also wondering if anyone has tried one of those antenna extensions that give you about 24"?  It's all line of site based, so every little bit helps.

General Talk / Heat rash
« on: August 09, 2022, 08:06:45 AM »
On days on the ocean when it gets sunny and warm, inevitably I'll get pretty hot in my wetsuit by day end and develop this "heat rash" on my legs which looks bad but doesn't really bother me that much.  Anyone found a way around that wearing a wetsuit?

General Talk / Kayak pedaling shoes?
« on: July 31, 2022, 12:52:49 PM »
Need some hive input on shoes you like for pedal kayaking.  I put in a lot of miles for sure, typical day is 12-20 miles and 6-10 hours.  I've been wearing a heavy duty dive bootie with a decent sole and I've even added insoles, but by midway through the day, the soles of my feet are usually pretty uncomfortable.

I'm a mountain and road biker and miss the stiff carbon soles of my bike shoes!  I'm thinking I need something more like a true shoe with some foam padding etc.  Maybe NRS Boundary boots, or...?  Thoughts?

Craftsmen's Corner / Downrigger mount 2015 Revo 16
« on: July 23, 2022, 01:15:19 PM »
Well, after overanalyzing things forever I finally decided to bite the bullet and get a downrigger and utilize the cupholder method. Thanks in advance to all the info posted here before me by pmmpete, nowhereman, chopper and others.

I found a pair of older Scott downriggers on CL that were cheap and had the clutch system, which I've had before and wanted this time around too.  Switched out the stainless to 100# braid.

Cupholder mount was using some old 1/4  starboard material I've had laying around for more than a decade. I cut it to the height I wanted and length (2xpiexR) to custom form into the shape of the cupholder by heating it with a heat gun, then bending it and inserting it into the cupholder holding it until it cooled. I then cut up some nice hard 1.5" maple to west marine epoxy and screw into the top to form the base of what I'd screw the platform into later.

The platform was a piece of scrap that I bought from TAP plastics for $3.50.  Besides the downrigger and the braid, really the only thing I had to purchase. I decided to shape that so the downrigger sat aft and outboard so it was super comfortable to reach (no leaning) and also did not rub in any way on my leg as I can't stand that sensation when cranking out 15 miles.

The platform is secured on the left with a piece of Paracord and a SS shackle that is sized so it locks the platform down super tight clasping to the hobie screw down padeye for the centerboard latch. On the right side I used a custom Bungie I created that goes from a padeye underneath the base to another that I customer fabricated to screw into the after bolt hole for my carrying handle.

Between the platform being secured to a custom molded cupholder fitting, and the two inboard/outboard latches, this thing is rock solid. The outboard Bungie still allows me to store my paddle, which was important since there is no port side paddle securement on the Review 16 (dumb move by hobie).  I added some gorilla duct tape around the base of the cup holder to make that slightly tighter and prevent any slipping, that worked great.

The downrigger itself I only modified by bending the arm in to come as close as possible to the hull to minimize starboard lean, which was heavy before I did that.  I also fabricated a super short retrieve handle on advice from chopper from a pvc fitting.  I've fished this 4 times now, and am loving it and see no need for further changes. Running a 4# ball for now, may switch to a 6 but we shall see.

For Trade / 8# downrigger ball
« on: July 18, 2022, 08:07:51 AM »
This 8 is great but I'd trade for a 4 and not hesitate!  Let me know if you have a 4# ball you'd like to trade, I need a backup.  PIF.

Send me a PM

General Talk / What pound braid on downrigger?
« on: July 15, 2022, 08:12:27 AM »
In the 12 years I salmon fished from my boats, we always ran 150-200# braid on the DR.  However on the kayak I'm thinking something much lighter (maybe 50 or 65?) would be better. I'm dragging only a 4-6# ball (not 15) and the thicker the braid the more I'm fighting resistance. I'd also like that ball to break free if it gets snagged on something...or when a thresher picks up the ball and runs as used to happen to us on the boat once a year or so.  What are you guys running and why?

General Talk / Downrigger install - port or starboard?
« on: July 14, 2022, 08:00:52 AM »
I'm ready to make the addition of a downrigger on my Revo 16. I do all my fish landing on the port side so my fish finder is mounted on the right side and I keep the port side clear of junk. Normally I'd just mount the downrigger on the port side to support my landings on that side, but that would then mean both sides of the kayak are gear encumbered in the need of a self rescue. I'm sure this must have been discussed before, but I can't find it. Thoughts?

Hobie Kayaks / Hobie Vantage seat upgrade
« on: April 20, 2022, 10:06:42 AM »
In general I've been pretty impressed by Hobie's engineering but occasionally I'm like "what were they thinking"?  So it is on the Vantage seat for my 16' Revo for the incline control cable sleeves.  They are made out of some magical weave that seems to have mysterious magnetic qualities for attracting fish hooks!!!  Once having been hooked with a barbed hook, getting the hook back out without damaging the sleeve is nearly impossible, as my frayed sleeves bear witness. I don't really care what they look like, but I was getting worried about damaging the dynema lines inside.

Simple upgrade was to take some 1/2" split loom cable runs and cut them to length and simply slide them over the sleeves. Took me maybe 5 minutes and probably cost a buck in materials. Have been on multiple outings since installs, works great.
