« on: January 29, 2023, 05:42:14 PM »
I have a 2013 Hobie Outback.  I'm interested in putting an electric motor on it.  What are some suggstions as to what motor/battery to use and any other insight into what modifications provide the best results.  Thanks for any help.

Craftsmen's Corner / Hobie Outback rudder control
« on: May 05, 2022, 09:41:03 AM »
I have a 2013 Outback and the rudder deploy function has failed.  The recover rudder system works fine.  When I deploy the rudder,  the rudder does not lock in place and as I peddle the boat faster, the rudder swings back and I can't steer.  The deploy handle has a little cord showing when retracted.
When the rudder system first failed a few months ago I looked inside the hull and discovered the bungee that retracts the deploy cord had failed so I replaced it with new and reassembled it as close to what I originally found.  It worked but the deploy handle still had a little slack in it when the rudder was retracted.
I've refered to Youtube for some help but find little on an older Outback rudder repairs
What are your thoughts?  Do I take it to the Hobie dealer or ?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / fish finder recommendations
« on: January 21, 2022, 03:49:31 PM »
Unfortunately my capsizing last week took more than my dignity.....it also finished off my Lowrance Hook 5.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to replace it with.  I can live with a 4-inch screen minimum but prefer 5 inch....I just don't want to mortgage the farm to do it.  What do ya think?

Kinda late announcement but I'm fishing there tomorrow morning launching around 8 AM.  I'm in a dune Outback on channel 69.  Anyone up for it?

PS.......Is the launch fee 15 bucks now?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / video cam/mounting/general info
« on: September 02, 2020, 09:36:31 PM »
I'm thinking of adding a video camera to my equipment list.  I know nothing about them.  I've seen cameras that appear to be mounted to ones hat or chest as well as a pole behind my seat.  What brand do you guys use and how do you mount em?  Thanks for any info.

General Fishing Tips / How do you catch bait in the port?
« on: December 15, 2019, 09:08:16 PM »
I have fished the port for a long time however I have never been able to catch bait. Can anyone please share what the procedure is to procure the minnows to slay the stripers short of buying them at Penny Bait?  The bait, hook size, type of leader and depth to fish would be good info to have.  Thanks for any help fellow yakkers.

General Fishing Tips / Umbrella rig
« on: March 25, 2019, 10:56:10 PM »
Calling all umbrella rig users......What set back do you run while trolling an umbrella rig?  How deep does it run at say 50 feet back?  I've tried the umbrella at the port with no results so apparently I'm doing it wrong.  I appreciate any info anyone can share.  Thanks all.

We launched at 6:30 with hopes of big fish…….not so fast.  We had a really low tide and some areas required us to “walk” our yaks across some thin spots.  One of our group had a FF problem and when trying to pull along side of me he capsized his Outback.  We weren’t in a shallow area so he had to swim for it.  He’s really new to yaking so it was sort of a cluster F.  He made it to shore amongst the mud and downed trees but his yak was upside down and stuck mid stream with his rods in the holders pinning it in 7 feet of water not to mention his teathered Mirage drive anchoring it securely to the bottom.

There were 2 of us still in our yaks but unsure how to help the situation.  I went downstream a few hundred feet to see if there was a sandbar we could try to beach the boat but instead found deep water and a huge log which bent the hell out of my Mirage drive.
Still able to peddle I headed back to the truck to get a rope in hopes of dragging the yak ashore.  When I returned 20 minutes later the wet yakker had swam out to the stranded boat and somehow broke it loose enough to pull it over to the shore where he righted the boat.  The rear hatch was “open”……..damn!!  He bailed out his boat the best he could and was able to hop on with “most” of his gear.  He did lose a nice baitcaster and some tackle but came away alive……it could have turned out real bad.

That was enough for me so I called it a day and limped back to the launch with out hooking a single fish. No photos today as it was elbows and assholes for while.  Now how to fix this drive………
