Thanks for the info about the 3D printer guys.  I am also doing research to buy one to make my own design swimbaits.

2 things to consider:

1. Do you want to design your own lures? If so find a program you like to design with. I use Fusion360 (free for hobbyist) some people like more sculpting tools like ZBrush ($$$) or Nomad Sculpt on the iPad. Download those programs and try to design some lures BEFORE you buy a printer just to make sure you like that process, it was/is a steep learning curve for me.

2. Then pick your process, printing on FDM printers then making silicone molds is the easiest and cheapest but you are somewhat limited in your designs. For swimbaits though it is totally fine. If you want to go injection molds, you will want a resin printer. I have and use both but I am an addict :-)

I just watched a few of your videos...good info.

I've been looking around at 3D printers, I don't know much about them yet but have been looking at the Creality Ender 3.  I've read a few pretty good reviews of it, including this one.... https://howchoo.com/3dprinterreviews/creality-ender-3-3d-printer-review.  [edit] i just noticed you mentioned the ender.  That might just settle it for me... [/edit]

Creating molds isn't what I initially had planned for it, but it would be more fun than re-printing the same dog hundreds of times :)

I'll have to watch your videos again, I think I missed the type of material the mold was made of so that it could deflect the heat of the plastic.

Hey man good to see you again!

There are 2 main types of printers - FDM and Resin. FDM printers are great for printing out masters that you make molds from, mostly silicone molds. I cover that process here -

For resin printers I use a high heat resin, Siraya Tech Sculpt that has a deflection temp of 320F but I have shot it with 360F plastic without an issue. That is what all my 3D printed molds are made from.

I know some people make molds out of PLA but it melts at a pretty low temp, like around 200...

For those that never met Joel or me for that matter, Joel is the sole reason we are here today at NCKA.

A long time ago all the Norcal people (about 20 of us) hung out in a sub forum of a site in SoCal. It had a week of ups and downs and Joel calls me.

"Hey Bill you know computers, you should setup a forum."

"I don't know Joel, politics, bickering, spam, I don't want to deal with all that crap."

"Bill man you have to do it, I will take care of it."

and so with that, NCKA came to be. Joel set off to tell everyone under the sun about NCKA and it just kept growing and growing until it turned into what it is today. Joel is the spirit of NCKA, he is the one that gave it a mellow vibe. Their where times I wanted to delete someone, ban them, drop an F-bomb, Joel was always their to mellow me out. A true pioneer and ambassador of NCKA and kayak fishing.

I will miss your calls at 4am asking me why I was not at the launch yet, your calls to give me a Bean Hollow shark attack report, and your calls to tell me some random minnow size fish is biting someplace 400 miles away in the dead of winter and that we should go try to catch some. Most of all I will miss your smile and never ending energy.

Thanks brother, safe travels.

thanks for the thanks guys. Yep I am still alive but since the move my work travel has gone up a ton so my fishing time has been cut down a lot. Thanks for posting my Speckled Trout Jim! That was a great day! Not only did a catch that beast but I also saw the fake space shuttle getting pulled up the intercoastal.

I will say again NCKA is not and has never been about me or what I did. Mooch basically forced me to do it so he would stop bothering me! Then ChuckE has out in a ton of work over the years, along with countless others and lets not forget the godfather Allen Bushnell, if not for him I would have never even gotten in a kayak. The PolePole stepped in and took NCKA to new heights.

Keep it going guys! I am stoked whenever I check in to see how things are going in NorCal!

Thanks for making it out guys, good times indeed. NCKA will always be my band of brothers and I expect all of you to come down for a little hunting, fishing or just relaxing.

Hope we can get together again on my next trip to the bay area.
