General Talk / British Columbia Advice?
« on: April 14, 2024, 08:09:58 AM »
I will be in the Whistler/Vancouver Island/sunshine coast area early-mid September this year mainly for mountain biking. But I'm tempted to bring the yak and river gear hopefully to find some salmon. Does anyone have any pointers on kayak fishing this zone? My dad has always told me of stories of heading up to Campbell River with my grandpa for salmon in the 60s w/ a 12' aluminum and doing really well.

I'd maybe be just as stoked spending a few days chasing salmon on rivers w/ bank access.

Thoughts?

General Fishing Tips / Re: Costa Rica this December
« on: March 30, 2024, 11:10:59 PM »
Costa Rica was awesome. I surfed every day for the week I was down there. I ended up going to Santa Theresa. Most days when I was out past the breakers pompano would cruise right by me. I drank a lot of coconuts and spent a day cruising around jeep roads on a rented dirt bike. No one wears helmets down there, it’s crazy (I did though).

Locals were super friendly but it was a little touristy. Saw juvenile sea turtles emerging from their nests. One of the coolest things I’ve ever seen! I had a great time and can’t wait to go back and explore the country more. I’m thinking Quepos next trip - less touristy? And I think good surf and fishing.

Only bummer was I got so sunburned! I’ve been in Humboldt county too long…

Eric - I’m skipping the bike race, I’ll be there! Just gotta send in the paperwork.

General Fishing Tips / Whiskeytown this Saturday 3/16/24
« on: March 13, 2024, 11:15:01 AM »
I'm planning on chasing Kokanee in Whiskeytown this Saturday. I have leadcore spooled up and ready to go. It's been moderately cold and super rainy the last couple months over there. High water in Whiskeyton now. But it's warming up this week and supposed to be pushing 70 by Saturday. Any intel on general zones to focus/depths/presentations would be appreciated! I'm planning on trolling in the hobie.

General Fishing Tips / Costa Rica this December
« on: October 10, 2023, 07:38:45 AM »
I’m going to Costa Rica this December for a week! Looking at going to Tamarindo for the first half of the trip and stay in a hostel/surf. I’d love to get out on a boat to hook and line or spearfish. Any recommendations? I’m also trying to see as much as I can down there hikes/wildlife-wise.
Thanks!
Max

Ok they are called “sprocket guards”. These are what I’m looking for.

Awesome, I can pay you shipping. I also hand-tie rockfish flies. I’d like to send you some if you’d like!

Awesome, I’m looking for the idler pulley and the rudder shrouds (plastic sleeves on the top of the rudder that keep the chain aligned).

I’m looking for a hobie mirage drive V2 for parts. Drive can be non-operational, it’s hard to find the parts I’m looking for.

General Talk / Re: Oregon Ocean Coho?
« on: June 04, 2023, 05:24:18 PM »
Thanks for all of the great detailed information Clayman! And for the tip on bait. The cut-plug lures were my go-to for ocean Chinook out of Shelter Cove for a good while, due to the bycatch. Great action.

Looks like I will give it a go this year with my buddy and fellow NCKAer fishloomis.

General Talk / Oregon Ocean Coho?
« on: June 04, 2023, 12:17:41 PM »
I’m thinking of trying my luck off the southern Oregon coast for coho salmon this summer. Anyone tried off the yak in Oregon for coho? I’m looking for spots between Brookings and Coos bay.

Any tips on good ports/fisheries in this zone would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Max

For Sale / Re: Costa Norte Rockfish/Salmon Flies

Folks,
Time to gear up for rockfishing and halibut this May. I've got flies and sandlance coming and made on request. Some locals here in Humboldt County say the sandlance is also excellent for CA halibut.
Hit me up,
Max

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Cape Mendo 12/17/22
« on: December 17, 2022, 02:53:40 PM »
Chris and I had a slow start to the morning today, rolled out of Eureka around 930 and launched at the cape around 1130. Fishing was hot. We pulled in a few lings and jumbo rockfish for the first hour. I took a second to take a picture of Chris with lake conditions on the big blue. And then I heard a holy sh*t and a big splash while I was taking the shot and I looked up. The landlord had made an unexpected appearance out of nowhere. It lifted Chris’s front end up, circled back around once aggressively and made another pass. Chris was quick to poke it with his fishing rod and it was gone. Both our adrenaline was pumping and we headed straight back inshore. My first time seeing a white. Neither of us will forget this day.

They are made for trolling but a slow “trooch” behind a banana weight works well too…

Curious about the sandlance. Are these meant to be trolled or can you drift?
