Happy Easter Everyone!

My buddy was having a pretty good day -- at first light a Wahoo, then a nice King Mackerel.

But then around 10 am off Boca Raton, Florida in 200ft of water while he was putting out a live bait to troll, his kayak got nudged. He didn't see what nudged him, but in the next instance, his kayak was hit so hard, that it flipped. He did not get a good look at it, but it was a greyish shark.

The next few minutes in the water expecting the shark to return were some of the scariest of his life!

The shark did not return. His closeby buddy allowed him to climb on the back of his kayak until they were able to flip his kayak upright.

The day went from good to horrible as my buddy lost 5 fishing outfits and a GoPro camera that was on, and might have otherwise had some viral video of the shark hit.

His outback Kayak had some teeth marks, one of which punctured all the way through and slowly leaked water as he headed back to the beach.

Having been attacked 4 times on the kayak by Hammerheads, this shark did not stay on the surface like Hammerheads normally do. The other most aggressive shark in this area is a Bull Shark, but bulls are brown in color.

This attack is very similar to those of California by the Great White Sharks.
But a group of us have been fishing this area for many years, and have never seen a Great White.

Then one buddy did a check on the Shark Tracker App, and Guess what!

It looks like the 12ft 4" 1200lb male Great White Shark named IRONBOUND happened to be off Boca Raton today.

I think I am going to load that app on my phone for future reference.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: FishFinder location - left or right side?

Center mount doesn't leave enough room for the fish  :smt002.

Also, I haven't asked how many guys do this, but I typically relieve myself by aiming for the drive well. The depthfinder would be in the way of the beginning and ending of the stream.

LOL, The mirage drive well is the Hobie latrine.  Not only does it get used for relieving #1, but here in SE Florida where the water is 80 degrees, I use the mirage drive opening for #2 as well.  My FF is mounted on my right side for constant viewing.  It's a major form of entertainment.  Even when the fishing is slow, If the activity is high on the FF, It keeps me motivated to keep trying.  Sometimes I will even meter a fish chasing the jig.  I am constantly adjusting the scale, and destination and/or putting new reference marks on the FF.  In the screenshot, a fish is seen checking out my downrigger set up 90ft down.

Time to bust out my jigging electric reels.  :smt001

Electricity?  That's cheating! :smt003

This is an interesting thread.  Lightning storms can come and go fast in SE Florida.  When the static electricity is heavy, vertical fishing rods start buzzing.   If the rods start buzzing, it's time to secure them horizontally(stops the buzzing), and head for shore.

Nice finds! too bad they can't ship it to the store for free pickups.

Wanted To Buy / Re: Looking for Fish Finder
« on: February 06, 2023, 08:13:02 AM »
I own a Revo 13 and have using a 7 FF for years.  It works great. Its best to match it with 1.5 inch ball mount. I mount mine in the sail mast with Ram 1.5 Ball wedge mount.

I am also using a Raymarine Element 7.  I like mine closer as I am always fiddling with the settings.  To feel less cramped, I made a swivel mount with PVC.  A ball mount is best to provide some give against heavy contact.  The bigger the ball, the better the holding in place.   I like the picture and software layout, but the RealVision 3D is a joke.  At least they are not charging an extra 1K for a sonar box to display it like other brands.   Does anyone have 3D display that is accurate and usable?  or is this still just developing tech that is not worth the purchase?

The fish finder is a major source of entertainment.  Even when fishing is slow, if I am metering fish, it keeps me busily trying to catch one.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Mono/Floro to braid knots

I'm going towards the hollow core to flouro connections with the needles and all that glue and jazz, why?  Stay tuned...I'm not sure why yet... :smt005 :smt006

I have been using the FG for awhile and am pretty satisfied with the results.  The one prejudice I have against the hollow core is that it tends to float and not sink as fast as solid core braids.

That is one intense lightning bolt!  Where was that?  In SE Florida we get a fair share of lightning.  When the static electricity gets heavy, the fishing rods will start to buzz when stowed vertically.  When my rods start buzzing, it's time to stow them horizontally(they stop buzzing when laid horizontal) and head for shore.

Dang, livin’ the dream…did you land em’ both? :smt006

Thanks, definitely an adrenaline situation.... for a moment I thought the sailfish was going to land in my kayak.  Landed both and safely released the Sailfish.
