CA Regulations / Re: Question about Duxbury Reef SMCA
« on: May 11, 2022, 10:00:55 PM »

How come the regs include abalone + float tubes in the MLPA shore fishing definition? Rock pickers?

There's also the extra FINE print you need a magnifying glass to see.

Duxbury PDF
*Finfish are defined here as any species of bony fish or cartilaginous fish (sharks, skates and rays).
**Note: The recreational abalone fishery is closed until April, 2026.

Iím not referencing from the general DFG rules.
I quoted from the rules specific for Duxberry off the DFG and wildlife website.

1.  You have to be physically standing on shore or at least standing in the surf.  Once you start swimming or ďleaveĒ the shore, then itís prohibited until you pass the 1000ft boundary line.

2.  Same as 1.

3.  DFG says recreational ďtakeĒ.  This includes fishing by line and spear.  If you launch from shore and start your recreational take past the 1000ft boundary line, then youíre clear.  However, youíll likely have to kayak back in thru the SMCA, which you may need to prove you didnít take any fin fish within the SMCA (with photos, gps, etc) if a wildlife officer checks you out when you land.

Nice fish.
I was out there as well today.

Are you using separate game clips for each fish?  Seems like a great idea...

Last year, I had two fish over 30Ē on one clip.  Both thrashed and managed to unclip the loop.  Luckily didnít lose the fish.  Helps having an empty spare clip after the 1st or 2nd fish.

General Talk / Re: Interest in Kayak Rentals?
« on: April 20, 2022, 07:34:23 PM »

My interest in the topic was more so to understand why this wasn't more of a common practice. Before I bought my kayak and moved into a house, I lived in pretty tight quarters (also know quite a few friends in a similar scenario) that does not allow me to own a kayak and I seriously looked into if there was an option to rent a Hobie but didn't find any promising needs. After getting my kayak I fell in love with the sport and my wife and I go almost every weekend, but if I didn't own a house I would have never been able to get exposed to the sport and also this awesome community. In the Bay Area, space feels like a limiting factor for a lot of people and I wonder if there are other like me (1.5 years ago) who would fall in love with the sport but just cant access it due to storage space issues.

There are actually a few kayak dealers that will allow you to rent Hobies for a few hours at their store or even take away with you (though leaving a hefty deposit in case of damages).  What's nice is that if you decide to buy a new kayak, the rental fee is usually discounted from the purchase.

Sorry for the dirty pics.  My yard is a mess right now with construction.
In the middle of rewiring and shortening the pole for the motor.  Will be buttoned up and cleaned for the next owner.

Kayak is still here.  Iíll wait a few more days before I try Facebook/Craigslist/social media to sell the kayak.

For Sale / SOLD- 2017 Hobie Outback - $1400
« on: April 05, 2022, 07:51:25 PM »
I got this awhile back to shuttle my kids around inside harbors and flat calm water.

Whatís the deal?  Why so cheap?

When I got this, it was missing the drive and vantage seat.  No accessories at all.  Iíve added a watersnake trolling motor where the drive would normally go, and just use a pad for a seat.  The brackets for the vantage seat is there, I just donít use it.  Thought about doing the Hobie seat mod but never got around to it. Itís pre-wired for a Garmin FF but that thing died last year.  But the wiring and transducer is still on the boat.  Will throw in a Hobie paddle.

Donít use it anymore.  Kids getting bigger and not interested on being on the water.  Wanting to free up space before my next house project.

Pick up in El Cerrito.  Will post pictures tomorrow.

I like Gatherer Outfitters out of Berkeley.  Smaller lesser known than the other charters but the service is top notch.
