I am looking for a heavier Siwash than what Gamakatsu makes, they appear kind of flimsy to me? I switch out my treble hooks with Siwash's ?  I can never find Owner or other brands of Siwash in stock. has anyone tried using the gorilla hooks to replace trebles with? Or what do you use. I do this to help preserve the ones I plan on releasing and reduce the chance of accidentally hooking myself.

The VMC Siwash hooks are pretty heavy duty.

They're also less brittle than Gamakatsu in case you want to pinch your barbs, but maybe it's not as sharp?

Gamies are sharp, no argument there, but they also tend to break easier. Owner's gorilla is heavy duty but short in overall length. I will look to find the VMC's. Where do you get yours?

I got mine at Dick's although the last time I went there, they were cleaned out. You should be able to get them online too.

Check out the gammy 510 hook. It's a stinger hook with an open eye. Very stout very sharp and the design rolls the hook point in line when you push down on it. Unlike the typical siwash that swings off on an angle when you push down on it. Big difference! The stinger hooks are designed to hook while free hanging.

What sizes are you looking at? The VMC’s I’ve been using on my lure builds have been good so far and not too expensive.

I have mostly bought dressed siwash but just started using these, which I like better so far

My other choice is the big river hooks. Gammy's copy of the sickle hook.

Slowly I have been changing various sizes of trebles to 2/0 to 5/0 Siwash. Salmon rules started me off that way, then a very near miss at hooking myself with a rockfish I boated almost caused me to have self administered vasectomy. Too close and I have decided just to go that way for pretty much everything.

My Gamakatsu siwash hooks seemed brittle; their points broke after one use.
Mustad Beak hooks 5/0 work great for salmon trolling.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

does it need to be a siwash?  I really like the owner barbless no escape hook but they're not siwash.  I use high quality split rings with them.
