I've had good luck with standard horizon brand. Getting one that floats is a good idea, IMHO.

I'm looking at the floating Horizon hx300 myself. $79.99 from the GSP Store right now with the $20 rebate. Anybody else have experience or input about this model ?

Yeah, GPS store has been my go to place for Standard Horizon VHF's. I have the HX 870 with has an automatic distress call buttom and GPS. It's not that big and the HX 870 has a bigger screen than the previous model.

HX870 is what I have.
Just one thing it uses up the battery in about 10 hours.

Score!

I've got the HX851 and was just curious as to what the differences are between the 851 and the 870 (other than "about $25").

I purchased a Standard Horizon HX300 from West Marine.  While I can scan and hear talk  on a number of channels, I'm not certain I can transmit. I've tried a number of times asking for a "Radio Check" and no one, at least from what I can hear, is responding.  I'm not certain I'm doing this correctly.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Just because you don’t get a response doesn’t mean they didn’t hear you. A lot of boaters don’t respond to any “radio check”. I find it really annoying, but that’s just the way of the world. If you happen to be in Santa Cruz, try channel 9 or 11 and you’ll probably get a response (or, if it’s summer, you can always reach Bushy on channel 69, as he practically lives on his kayak).

Not sure what channel your Coast Guard runs down there but ours up here will always respond to a radio check on 22 Alfa. Also a good idea to know what channel there on  :smt002
