General Talk / Bodega Bay Fishing?
« on: January 19, 2019, 01:46:51 PM »
I've crabbed in Bodega Bay a few times and it's always fun, but is there anything I can fish for while the crab pots soak? I'm taking my boat instead of kayaks, so I'll have a bit more range, but it's not big enough to take outside the bay. I'd like to just soak a line while we wait for the pots. Any suggestions? Not looking for anything to take home necessarily, but just something to have fun with and pass the time. In the past, I've tried fishing with squid hoping for rays or sharks, but no luck. That being said, I think we only fished for 30 minutes or so.

General Talk / Ft. Baker boat launch?
« on: April 20, 2018, 07:24:06 PM »
Anyone launched a boat from here? I've put my kayaks in, but I'd like to bring my boat out. It's a 14' aluminum that is a breeze to launch, but just wondering what to expect if anyone has experience. They say to avoid a low tide, but other then that, I can't find ANY info about it. There is a couple days in the future that are looking food for the bay.

Thanks.

Recipes / Getting Crabs Home?
« on: December 20, 2017, 09:06:21 AM »
I tried a search but didn't find what I was looking for.

I'm crabbing for the first time next week, but that has spawned a lot of questions. Most importantly, what is the best way to care for crabs after you catch them?? I'm aware that once they die, the clock is ticking quickly.

Home is about two hours from where we are fishing, so I'm thinking I have a couple options:

1. Put in ice chest with a little ice, cover with a wet towel soaked in ocean water for the drive, and cooking immediately when I get home.

2. Cook them immediately after getting on shore, then put in a cooler with lots of ice.

I'd rather cook them at home, but I couldn't find much information on how long the wet towel method will work.

Anyone? Thank you.

General Talk / White Shark? (Photo)
« on: November 28, 2017, 10:58:33 PM »
I was in a helicopter over Malibu today (maintenance flight, long story) and saw this dude. We were about 600' above the water and this is a heavily cropped iphone photo.

This was the second shark we saw on our flight. The first one was not a GWS. Smallish (4-6'), looked black, and was swimming quickly just beyond the breakers. This dude was about 150 yards out and swimming slowly. It was enormous. While it was hard to tell from the air, and even harder from an iphone photo, when I saw it, there was no doubt what it was. But seeing as this is the FIRST white shark (I think) I've seen, I figured bringing it here would be a good way to let better trained eyes take a look. If I had to guess, 12-14'. It was huge.

Craftsmen's Corner / Deck Eyes: rivets or screws?
« on: December 07, 2016, 07:48:55 PM »
I'm looking at endless Youtube videos for modifications. I ordered some decks eyes to be able to customize as I want, but what's best? Rivets or screws? I've seen both. Screws seem easier, but rivets may last longer and stay more secure. If using screws, do you add some type of silicone or marine sealant?

I'm not even sure if I'll add any (pick up my kayak on Sunday) but I'm looking forward to making some modifications (within reason).

Just curious to see what the consensus is.

Thanks!

Introductions / Vacaville Newbie
« on: November 27, 2016, 12:13:13 AM »
Hello all,

Im Mike, a 45 year old father of two. I'm an outdoors junkie; I hunt from July to January, then fish during the off season.

I've fished all my life in all sorts of vessels including canoes, small boats, big boats, float tubes and more. I spent a day fishing and crabbing out of Half Moon Bay (no fish and 4 undersized crab) with a friend in a borrowed kayak and have pretty much lost my mind. I'm obsessed with getting into some lings from a kayak. I've been pouring over reports, launching places, tackle, and more.

I'm glad to have found this place. Browsing as a guest has been super helpful.
