Sounds like a good day, thanks for the report.

How'd you do guys? Was the lake packed today?

Cool video and nice bass! I've been trying to figure out how to catch bass without much success. Looks like the senko worked well for you. Have you ever fished Lexington Reservoir?
If all else fails, a wacky rigged senko won't.  If you want to catch more bass, learn how to fish finesse.  Won't say they'll all be big, but you'll definitely catch more.  Great video of the tournament though, I would imagine there would be bigger bass in that private pond.

Looks like an awesome place to fish, but at $2,000 a year it's too rich for my blood.

If all else fails, wacky rig a senko or my favorite a Zman ZinkerZ at docks, or shallows and you should get action.  Quality may not be great but quantity is there.

That's a great way to get into some big stripers but you should be careful about how many a "few" is.  I believe the rule is 2 split tails per person is the limit.  Anyways, awesome job with the minnows they are great bait, I never would of thought chicken livers would get em.  I always use worms dug up from my back yard.

Well, at least you got out there and gave it a try.  Some fish is better than no fish.  I was planning on hitting Hennessy this weekend but if it's as low as you say then I might scrap that plan.

I used to live there (Oahu), some of the best fishing I've ever experienced from a kayak or shore.  Ulua are such hard fighters but I'm glad you got to fish this time around.  I have in-laws there so I just keep my gear in their garage haha.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Sturgeon presentation
« on: February 23, 2016, 05:35:38 PM »
I catch a decent amount of sturgeon and the bait changes depending where you fish.  In the bay, ghost shrimp is king.  In the delta from Martinez to Pittsburg I always go wtih grass shrimp if they got em, eel or roe if not.  Napa River I go with pile worms or frozen shad, if the diaper stripers leave the bait alone long enough you'll get a sturgeon hit.  I think what's most important though is learning to read a bite and knowing when to set the hook.  Different areas also have hot depths where sturgeon hang out at, this just comes time time and experience but flat muddy areas deeper than 10 feet near a drop off is a good bet.  There's more to it but like I said it's all just experience.  Once you start catching them you'll realize they aren't as rare as you thought they were.  Good luck and enjoy your time out.

General Fishing Tips / Re: reel help
« on: February 19, 2016, 11:43:45 PM »
I have always loved Shimano and said I wouldn't stray but I needed a cheap line counter reel and Okuma came out the winner for me.  Their Cold Water series are my new favorite reel for trolling, jigging, and anything else really.  It's pretty solid and all I do is a quick rinse after ocean use with no problems so far.  After I bought one, my brother saw me use it and he bought his own, then a few weeks later he bought another to replace his second rod.  By no means is it really "cheap" but it's under a $100 and the price keeps going up so I might pick up another soon.

Surf perch off th jetties can be good.

Are you coming via Usal?

Wow thanks for the info guys and I'm coming up from 101.  I actually was thinking about camping in Humboldt Redwood park near the Eel River and immediately thought about Eric and all of his great adventures there but I couldn't pass up visiting Shelter Cove from all the stories.  I'll take pics and can't wait.  Nothing better than fishing, riding and camping  :smt001

General Fishing Tips / Shelter Cove shore fishing
« on: February 19, 2016, 11:56:28 AM »
Hey guys I'm planning to ride up to Canada on my motorcycle next month and plan on camping at Shelter Cove on night 1.  I'm planning on bringing my rod and a few swimbaits, how easy is it to get a nice rockfish or ling for dinner from shore?, or should I just plan on stopping at a burger joint prior to heading there? Also, any other fishing destinations along the way you guys would recommend? Thanks

General Fishing Tips / Re: Minnow Traps Advice
« on: February 19, 2016, 11:53:34 AM »
I've lost three minnow traps over the few months period when I tried catching my own bait...I don't remember catching any minnows.  I've since given up on it for now but nothing worked for me, bread white and wheat, dog food, cat food, human food...nada.
