I thought I would put up a pic of my most recent rod build. I built this rod on an Epic fiberglass blank. The Bandit is a 7'9" three piece 10 wt. This rod will stow away for launch/landing safety and since its fiberglass it is much tougher than the graphite rods. The shorter length will help when landing fish as well. I'll be pairing it up with a Lamson ARX. I have been messing around with a 3' - 30lb bite leader, a short 15lb section to be the sacrificial lamb and 30' of T-20 to get the flies down.
I also have been using 30 lb braid instead of running line and backing since it is so much smaller in diameter. The braid cuts down on the lift from current or wind and also helps to get it down faster. I'm still experimenting with the set up so if you guys have some thing that works well for you and are willing to share let me know.

Looks real nice. I love green rods. I have yet to go out for lings. If you ever go out on the weekend, let me know, I would love to join you. I got black rock fish last fall at HMB.

Looks very nice!

Sweet looking rod! Definitely going to put the hurt on lingcods. On my set up I run 250yds. of backing with a intermediate shooting line with the front loop cut off and attach 30ft. of T-20 with a 3-4ft. section of straight 20lb. Maxima. If you go to NWKA and look under Waving the bug wand there is some great info and also The Caddis Fly Blog under saltwater fishing and also look up Jay Nicholas, he has a really good book out called Sea Flies. Definitely a must if you fish in the open ocean.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I have not run into anyone in my neck of the woods fly-fishing the big blue in a yak.

Very nice build!
How is the 30lb. braid stripping wise? Seems like it would be slippery and if it got wrapped around your finger and a fish took the fly...I like an intermediate fly line type running line.

recently upgraded rods to a gloomis shortstix 10-11 after being undergunned on a trip down south, I'll echo the shorter rod can lay it to them, more leverage and much easier to grab at the boat.
ive been using a rio OBS in a 9wt w/40lb braid.

I haven't had any trouble with the braid so far. I have not had it wrapped around my finger with a fish on however. The lings are so aggressive and I fish close to the bottom so usually it will be on the reel, sometimes by the time I set the hook.

sweet looking build, get some go-pro when you strip into the fatty ling bro!
