I don't want to sound insensitive here...
And I apologize if I come off that way.

But who goes to an island to practice sword fight?
is sword fighting even a thing?

sigh.

Sad but there are people out there who think just because they are great swimmers they don't need PFDs.

Here's what's interesting:
"The girl told officers that Jacintho was swimming back toward the kayak, then yelled “no” before disappearing under the surface, Brooks said."

Someone pulled him underwater?

Excerpt from article "They were on their way to an island to practice using a sword"

The article doesn't say anything about sword fighting.

Practicing with various swords and other weapons is very common in martial arts.

Here's what's interesting:
"The girl told officers that Jacintho was swimming back toward the kayak, then yelled “no” before disappearing under the surface, Brooks said."

Someone pulled him underwater?

Sounds like he may have experienced cramping in his legs and then panicked causing him to drown.
When I start to cramp while diving it's usually over soon thereafter. Those leg cramps can be pretty disabling in a instant.

RIP fellow yaker.

A 30yr old man with a propensity for swords... paddles to an island with an unrelated 16yr old girl... to show her how to use a sword.  Okaaaayyyy.

I may be jaded/insensitive, but it sounds like Darwinism averted the real tragedy.  I may delete this post later.  :smt003

Don't, let it be!  That's we're all thinking anyway.

The article says 5 dead at Clear Lake in 1 year. Hard to believe.
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

A couple of weeks ago when I returned to the launch site at the Helena Regulating Reservoir after a day of fishing, two gals were setting up a tandem kayak.  They admired my pimped out Hobie Revolution, finished setting up their kayak, and parked their vehicle.  Then the passenger asked about life vests, and the kayak's owner announced "I never wear a life vest."  I thought "should I say something or say nothing?"  I smiled and said "I wear a life vest!"  The passenger asked for the vehicle key, walked over to the vehicle, got out a PFD, and strapped it on.  The owner didn't.

Stand up paddle boarders seem to be less likely to wear PFD's than kayakers, which is dumb, because they are more likely to end up in the water.

Pretty sure the law requires PFD's on board for each passenger at least.  With 5 deaths, LEO patrols should be stepped up to educate folks.  They should be asked at the gate to show they have the PFD's before paying.  Signs should be up in conspicuous places to remind people that it's the law and folks are watching.
Education separates the uninformed from the idiots.
However, you can't Idiot-Proof the world.  Besides, what's wrong with loosing a few idiots anyways?
I too, think it's creepy some 30 year old guy fancying himself as a swordsman is taking a 16 year old girl to an island in the lake.

Maybe he dropped a sword, and it was just too much for him to bear. It was from the movie Shanghai Noon, Owen Wilson signed it. Lake was just too deep, he never made it down to pick it up. We should get BigJim or scuba tanks and go look, that thing has gotta be worth a mint on eBay!   :smt008
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.
