Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Properly rolling cam straps
« on: July 08, 2022, 02:33:53 PM »
I don't know why I never bothered to look this up, but TODAY, I finally got around to looking up how to store cam straps:

No more bag full of tangled straps!

Wanted To Buy / WTB: Bluefin Setup
« on: June 18, 2021, 02:01:30 PM »
I know someone has a 60+# setup collecting dust.  I'd like to give your rod and reel new life! And have it sit in my garage until they show up again.  Let me know what you have.  Thx!   :smt006

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Nylon nets replaced with Snag Resistant
« on: March 20, 2021, 03:31:48 PM »
So, in an effort to avoid hooked nets and to be kinder to the fish I release this coming season, I swapped the nylon nets on my Ego S2 Slider Large (22") and big salmon net (39") with Promar  Hook Resistant Replacement nets:

Fits Ego S2 Slider:
Item: RN-502BR
Hoop size: 20" to 24"
Depth: 24"

Fits my 39" salmon net:
Item:  RN-500BR
Hoop size: 37" to 40"
Depth: 40"

Pretty straight forward replacement, but the EGO required a little muscle to bend the hoop to get the net on. It went back to form after the manhandling though. The EGO has instructions online, but I'll warn you now that you'll need a tiny phillips head, a flat head as a pry, and I think a 6mm socket (sorry, this write up was an after thought).

Anyway, the nets didn't add too much weight and the depths look acceptable.  For reference, my daughter is about 4'7" (55") tall.

Hope this saves ya some time.

We went fishing out of HMB yesterday.  Prior to launch, the Harbor Patrol stopped by as we were rigging up in the parking lot.  He gave us the Safety/Owner Stickers and loaned a Sharpie.

He asked us to spread the word that if you don't have a sticker (Name, Telephone Number), just stop by the Harbor Patrol's Office.  They'll give you as many as you need.

Also.... start thinking about carrying signal devices.

General Talk / Boat Surveyor in Santa Cruz?
« on: February 23, 2020, 11:54:54 AM »
Anyone have a recommendation on a boat surveyor in the Santa Cruz area?  I'm seriously considering a boat...  you know, for mothership kayaking purposes.

General Fishing Tips / Is a 4ft Cast Net too small?
« on: January 14, 2020, 02:05:05 PM »
I picked up a 6' cast net for this year's herring run.  My 7yr old is SUPER interested in trying it, but I'm thinking it might be a bit big for her.

Have any of you ever tried a 4' net?  Reading different reviews online, the 4' net doesn't have enough weight to get down quickly enough to overcome the short spread of the net (for herring).  Would adding additional weight to the net help?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Reel for Morro Bay?
« on: November 13, 2019, 11:00:13 AM »
Hey guys, my wife is going down to fish Morro Bay in December from a cattle boat.  What's a good, level wind reel?  I hear they fish deep, just inside of 300ft.  None of my bigger gear is level wind.

Also, should I be looking for high, low gears, or 2-speed maybe?  It's been a while since I fished deep on a charter and trying to keep it comfortable for her.

I'll pair it with my Trevala Heavy rod.

Safety First / HMB distress call on Sunday 11/3
« on: November 05, 2019, 12:07:25 PM »
First and foremost, props to the powerboater, kayaker (unknown) in a red Outback, and Ichiro--RG for finding and assisting the distressed kayaker.    :smt006

Does anyone have any info about the kayaker in the red Revo13 that rolled and couldn't recover?

His rescue was a shit-show because he was panicking, shouting into the radio (unintelligible), and couldn't give his proper location.   By the time I caught up to them, the powerboat had the kayak tied to the stern of the boat, and they were dragging it back to harbor.  It looked like his crab pot was still strapped to the back of the Revo13 and the Revo had taken on quite a bit of water.

I'm interested to know:
1)  What caused him to go over?
2)  Was the pot strapped to his kayak?
3)  Did having the pot strapped to his kayak contribute to the roll-over and/or failure to right himself?
4)  Did he not have a whistle on his PFD?
5)  Were his waders filled with water?

I'm posting this because it's a teachable safety lesson.  I also want to call the kayaker out because he had his son (presumably young) with him in another grey Hobie.  I didn't hear the son on the radio, so I can only assume he didn't have one.  He could have died in front of his kid because he and his son were grossly unprepared to be on the water.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / HMB 6/2 - Nope
« on: June 02, 2019, 12:17:47 PM »
Took a buddy out to HMB to see if the salmon were in yet.  We didn't even really make it out of the harbor.  As we exited jaws, it became clear that the forecast was correct that it was 6ft swells at 8 second intervals, plus wind chop. The fan was steady blowing since about 7AM and never let up.  We turned back in, watched some other kayakers do the same, and fished the harbor for nada.

The only bright side (aside from just being otw) was pulling up a shaker halibut near the anchored tugboat on our way out to jaws.  May try again tomorrow

For Sale / Perception Tribe 13.5 Tandem *SOLD"
« on: May 06, 2019, 03:20:18 PM »
Need to make room in the garage.  It comes with seats and I'll throw in some paddles (not the ones pictured).  In its previous life, it was a rental kayak from Lake Tahoe and it shows.  Definitely has bumps, scrapes, and scratches, but no repairs done or needed to the hull.  It's a great kick around kayak for the family.  One of the clips for the seat is missing the "clip," but as you can see (I'm pointing to it in the pic), it functions just fine.

Asking $250 for NCKA.  It'll make its CL appearance next week at a higher price.  Thanks for looking!  :smt006

***Posted this up last year.  Life happened, sale fell through, wife got sentimental about the kayak, etc etc.

I stumbled across a Hobie Outfitter that was too good to pass up, so I REALLY need the room and this is definitely up for sale again!

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / HMB report: skunked
« on: February 19, 2019, 09:41:11 AM »
Yesterday I took some friends out of HMB for their first time crabbing.  Big ol' skunk for dungies.  I dropped pots at around 45 and 40 feet.  Our first string caught a bunch of decent sized red-rock crabs, but we didn't keep any of them.  Moved further southeast into shallower water and caught 2 short dungies, then we called it a day as the wind kicked up.  On the water by 9AM; Off the water by 1PM.

Learning lesson:  I gotta get back out and find new spots as my old spots aren't producing.  :smt003

For Sale / SOLD: Ocean Kayak Trident 15
« on: November 05, 2018, 01:18:00 PM »
***SOLD***
Earlier this year, I picked this Ocean Kayak T15 up from Sonoramike.  You can see his post here: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=82146.0

I originally bought it as a buddy yak, but ended up picking up another Hobie.  This thing has just been sitting in my garage since I bought it so figured it's time to pass along the deal.

Still needs the carry handles replaced.  The fishfinder comes with it.  I'll throw in some adjustable foot braces (uninstalled), and a seat.

Does not come with a paddle or rudder.

General Fishing Tips / Live bait while rockfishing?
« on: April 17, 2018, 10:32:20 AM »
If you're slinging a swimbait for lings and hook into a nice rockfish, how are you guys rigging the rockfish as livebait?

Are ya just pinning the rockfish to your jig head and sending it down?  Are you swapping out/re-tying rigs?  Are you still using weights and/or are you fly lining (pinning it in dorsal or throat) to make it swim down?

I ask because someone told me he adds a slider/snap swivel to his mainline, above his main swivel.  Then, he just adds his leader and swimbait until he happens upon a nice live bait sized offering.  He then pops off his leader, adds a weight to the slider, and rigs the livebait like a fishfinder rig.  Seemed like a reasonably efficient technique.  Thoughts?

Anyone have a pair sitting around?  I'm getting too lazy to deal with adjusting my Yakima gear and wanted to try the Seawing for a one-size fits most.  Thanks  :smt006
