Hey Anglers,
I've been thinking of putting this together for awhile now. I want to organize my first Fish and Learn.
The purpose of the Fish and Learn is to provide an avenue for new or seasoned kayak fishing
Anglers to get together to FISH and LEARN. I have learned many hard lessons as a season angler and I feel that it is time to pass this knowledge along.Come Fish, Come Chill, Come Learn.
MBF tomorrow will be handled by Ariel_Sea. Tomorrow at the LAUNCH.
20 dollars for those wishing to participate between friends.
Final Update:
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone going out tomorrow. I know there are some new faces so please make sure to come over and say hi. I got some hot dogs and chicken wings for the grill tomorrow, in addition to fruit and drinks. I think that I mainly come for the food.
Bait and Tackle:
I am going to go catch bait in a little bit for tomorrow, however, i shouldn't be your primary bait supplier tho :smt005. I will also tie up some halibut tackle to share for those who may need some assistance. I will have about 20-25 three way leaders at the event.
Shirts:
The T-shirts are in and they loook great!! I always print a few extra but i don't have much. Come catch me if you want to pick one up.
Just a reminder to sign waivers in the morning. I will try and make it out to help any new people with the basics of halibut fishing. We will come in for lunch around 1 and i'll do the full seminar from 1-2 p.m.
I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.

Smoked cali hali is never dry, especially with a cold one to wash it down.

Hella dry

I think it's a sear than a medium low technique to fully cook it and retain all its juicy tender flavorful satisfying sought after goodness. Takes about 4 minutes at the right filet thickness, overcook it 30 seconds and it may endup dogfood or excellent for the kids. :smt006

Surprising that people think its dry!!! I've never had it dry. Its my second favorite fish behind cod. Hali is so flakey!

What poll? Figured you were serious (and it was winter :smt003) cause often ends up "hella dry" when I cook it. Last time resorted to freezing for a month or so then making civiche.....wasn't dry then :smt001.
I'm down to give this Oyster Point place a try, look forward to learning a new spot and some new tips.
Gotta set this up Keith, you the man!

wait, are we talking about fishing here?

i'm more curious about dressing for emersion, than halibut fishing.
So many of these outings are about dressing for getting stuck in the water, that i'd really like to know what to wear after i've exited. coat and tie? tails?

Now wait a minute Martin, those 2 at ARW were whoppers and I had to go home cry myself to sleep after that (after my days and days of child-sized Hali's). Then I think there were some others, or maybe not, but I definitely remember that day we were out with your family and your 5-year old grandson pulled in 27" worth of Hali Beast -- yet another tearful night for me :smt010 -- which in my book counts as a Close Encounter for you. :evil5:
It was pretty awesome hearing and watching your grandson blow a gasket when he hooked up and landed that fish that was almost as big as him! :smt007 :smt023 :smt023

We just need a week or so of warm weather to warm up the flats....then it's on.
Think of the million or so 20 inch fish caught last year, they're all keepers now

Candlestick has a sketchy state park, but I hear it's cleaning up. Oyster point, from the satellite, seems to have a kayak access launch off the jetty or parking lot.

Where do you launch at Oyster and Candlestick?
There's a boat launch at Oyster Point, or if you dare, you can launch off the windsurfer stairs. For Candlestick, there's an old post about fishing the Brisbane Tubes. There are beaches/rocks you can get to on the northside of Brisbane industrial area. Personal preference, but I wouldn't park along Candlestick Parkway or launch from the State Park. There are rocks you have to scramble over and/or a two or three foot drop to get to the water. Plus, even during daylight, there's a high potential for your vehicle to get boosted... and it's crazy shallow around with mud flats around Candlestick point.

Would you eat a halibut caught at candlestick or oyster point?
I guess I would because they are migratory fish...but I do not think all come and go into the ocean...depends on the look of the fish...certainly not the belly meat...Oyster point yes....candlestick? I'll do some hali homework on resident hali.

If there is one spot that harbor worms it is going to be in the belly spot. I agree with Eddie, i think the majority of halibut are migratory fish that enter the bay in the spring and leave after the summer. However, i'm sure there are resident fish that live in the bay. I'll start hitting up the halibut grounds when the weather starts to stabilize out and the temp picks up.
I have a few honey holes where I know they like to hang and it is time to send eviction notices. Can't wait to get this going!

Learn about:

Best locations in the bay and ocean to target Halibut
Targeting tides
How to properly net/gaff halibut
Learn how halibut migrations around the bay.
Preparing your catch.
Basic Kayak Fishing Tips:
Dressing for immersion
Emergency plans
The Importance of PFD and fishing buddies
The Fish and Learn is TBD for now. Depending on the interest. FYI: April - May is a good time to hit the halibut around oyster point. The waters in the south bay tends to warm up first and would be a good time to hammer them out. So if the Fish and Learn is a go it will be around this time.

It's alright, we'll have plenty of staff for that event from YAB. We don't get a whole lot of NCKAers at our bass-centric events.

How are you planning on passing along all that great information ? OTW ? We could all raft up. That seemed to (almost) work for Racin Rob at the HMB PIF. Great video but couldn't find it - if someone knows where, post it up

Honestly, I wasn't intending this to impact the HOW event. I was anticipating 15-25 people attending. Honestly this is more of a hook up and learn than an official tournament like ARW last year. I'm trying to keep it more informal and just let people fish, learn and bbq/pot luck after. I would just consider this more if a hook up than a formal event like we did last year.
-
It looks like enough people have expressed interest.
But I just ran across this and would love to join in as well!
From Sacramento and would gladly make the trip.

I was out there on sunday.. and it was pretty slow. One shaker and one striper in 6 hours of trolling. Maybe we should wait til a little bit or do ARW. My 2 cents
-
I was there yesterday and with the clear water there was definitely fish to be had. I was able to pull a 26 incher out and lost a bigger one that came unbutton. There is bait at o.p. but the fish can move anywhere at any moment.

UPDATE: Let me know if you are interested in getting a shirt for the fish and learn. I have a minimum order to make it worth while for the printer. It will be 15 dollars total to get a long sleeve shirt and Lunch. Please respond to let me know. It would be great to have a few side dishes (pot luck) to go with the main entree. The event is still free for those wishing to attend; however, you will NOT get a shirt and lunch.

Maybe I missed it but has a date been set?
Would love to join. With or without shirt.

Hey, can we pay in advance so you don't have to front the cost for everyone? Organizing this is already a huge effort and last thing you need is to worry about collecting.

More shirts?! How do you have any room in your dresser? I feel like I have enough fishing-event-related shirts to outfit an entire homeless encampment. Actually, that would be kinda funny because it would look like a typical ncka get together, except with more homeless people.

I read the blog says June 9? I thought this is on the May 12th? What did I miss? Thanks
haha Thanks for the pointing that out.
I was just using the same language from last years ARW tournament. I changed it now.
Thanks Darius.
I thought I miss something lol. PURCHASED!
You are not allowed a pole. You can only use a handline to demonstrate what happens when you forget your gear at home and need to improvise and Keith is not there to give you a mooching line. Hahaha.

More shirts?! How do you have any room in your dresser? I feel like I have enough fishing-event-related shirts to outfit an entire homeless encampment. Actually, that would be kinda funny because it would look like a typical ncka get together, except with more homeless people.
Hahah I basically only wear ncka t shirts exclusively. I think I have personally recruited over 200 people wearing these shirts alone.
"What's ncka. National crouch kicking association?"
"Hmmm...we don't actually kick people in the crouch unless. Your name is Andy morales, but most of the time he deserved it. We are actually a fishing club"
"So you guys fish from a kayak? That is nuts. Isn't it dangerous?"
" It is dangerous but so is kicking Andy morales in the nuts. Afterwards he loves you more. Calls you racist names like f&$k you Chino. At the end of the day we are a botherhood"
" That sounds awesome I gotta check it out"

There are plenty of fish in the bay. You just gotta understand their behavior and you can get on them. If you are willing to put in the time and wait them out during tide changes they are pretty fun fish to catch. Now landing them will take some know-how without losing them.

Here is a fun tutorial for those looking to attend the Fish and Learn.
How to Fish Oyster Point:

Hey all. I'm very interested in this event but had a couple questions,
Will the learning part be on land? I think it would be hard to teach a group floating in the water but not sure how this works.
Also, I see the fee for the shirt and lunch but don't see a fee for the event. I'm not sure if my work schedule will allow me to go until last minute. Can I just show up? If so, what's the cost?
Thanks all

It is free to attend. You have the option to buy a shirt and lunch. I would recommend the shirt and lunch cause it helps me put the event together. There is always an option to bring a potluck item. If you just want to attend, show up in the morning and sign the waiver form and fish. I will give a quick run down of the land at oyster point for those first timers. You can also just read my tutorial on top. All the vets can just feel free to fish.
At 1:00 everyone will come on land and grab lunch and I'll give an in-depth tutorial of all the material on land until 2. Afterwards the envent is done but most people will just hangout and meet others; and if it is an ncka event God help me what else would happen.( I'm trying talking about you ariel_sea!) Lol :smt044 :smt002

I replied a while back for this event. I have purchased the shirt and lunch and hope that I am on the list for the day! Really looking forward to this day!!!

Just curious if you have rough headcount of the people showing up?
-
MBF - Ariel_Sea will be handling a MBF for those wishing to have some side fun. $20 dollars to participate. Find Ariel in the morning to join.

Looks like I'm not going to make it :(
Can anyone NCKA express my shirt to Santa Rosa?
-
Anyone coming from Santa Rosa that can EXPRESS something back to Craig? Please let me know also. Thanks
-
I can
-
Get stoked!
-
Congratulations on catching the fish of the day, Keith. Also, that lunch was amazing!
-
Thought this was supposed to be a fish and learn, turned out to be a fish and get schooled, WTF Keith! Dude sat around yacking away on the radio, launched late, kept hitting up the spots I had caught fish earlier and marked and then pulled the fatty out just after he started following me around. Then heads in early leaving all the undersized fish for the rest of us and proceeds to make everyone lunch.....
Also want to thank Ariel for kicking down with the live bait :smt006, trust me I babied them with constant water flushes and almost all of them died in the jaws of undersized halibut. :smt001 :smt001
Great seeing everyone out there and really enjoyed fishing a new spot!
-
Good job Keith! You got catch of the day and awesome lectures about ocean and bay fishing! I must say I’ve learned a lot! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! You are are truly an amazing man a legend in my book!
-
Thanks for putting together a great event... And for sharing your catch as well as knowledge.
-
Thanks Keith and Ariel for organizing and support! You guys rock!
It was an excellent event!
-
I wish I was there...sounds like a blast. More reports please... :smt006
-
Excellent event Keith, thanks for putting this together.
It was a pleasure to meet you all today. Hope we cross paths again soon.
-
Thanks for putting on the event! Lunch was good! Nice to fish a new spot! Nice to catch a few halibut!
-
Regret missing the event. Had early mothers day events.
-
Good meeting you Keith, Gill and others. Thanks Keith for putting this together. I couldn't stay for lunch but still good to be out on the water.
-
Thank you Keith for putting this on!! I had to go right before you shared your fish so I did not get a chance to say thank you for giving your time. At first I thought why fish first and then teach us how to catch them?
So I spent time online and thought I had it figured out. I had the secret set up. I was ready.
I thought, is this part of Keith's master plan? Make them do the homework ?
Well, an hour in I got my first hook up. Bang ! Line cut. Shark?? Then within the next 30 minutes two hook ups, but both spit hook at last minute. So I guess I needed help on landing not hooking up...
First year with my kayak. Been killing the lings but a halibut is still on my list. Halibut Slayer shirt will have to hang in the closet until I can wear it without lying. haha
-
Thanks Keith for putting this together. The NCKA camaraderie is pretty amazing! Had a blast fishing with everyone.
Bagged my first keeper on the yak in 20ft of water, 24” butt. Got her on the troll, using frozen anchovies.
-
Thank you for putting this together Keith. Even though Steven and I got skunked we had a fun day on the water and learned a lot from everyone. Now just looking forward to getting rid of the question mark that I put on my Slayer? tee shirt when I get my first keeper (haha). It was great seeing Ariel again and meet new people and the food was great!!!
I'll be back.
-
Thanks for putting this on LA! And thank you Ariel for the bait. I didn’t get any keepers but a lot of shakers just under 22 “.
Next stop GS12!
-
This was a fantastic event. Thank you to the organizer and participants!!! Great time and learning experience.
-
Thank you for putting this together, Keith.
Even though I still have get that keeper halibut from my kayak, it was a fun day fishing with everyone at the event. It was great meeting new people and seeing old friends.
-
Thanks Keith had a great time fishing and meeting others.

Thanks for organizing this Keith. You did an awesome job teaching us and providing an amazing lunch. I also really enjoyed the halibut steak you gave me. Hopefully, I can use my newfound knowledge to land my first halibut so I can wear the shirt.
-
Thanks everyone for coming. I'm a little tired today so I'll do an official post tomorrow with photos. I had a little convincing to go fishing on Sunday, but had to make the call in the morning.
Lucky to scratch up two today when the tides hitting right.

It ain't lucky Keith. You are the Grand Sifu Master (true butt slayer) :smt044
-
Damn Keith, I should've followed you put...lol
-
wow well done. looks like the season is dead for me :-( waiting on the surgery date for my knee. oh well hopefully there will be other seasons :-)
-
Thanks for organizing the event Keith! I have to leave early so I missed the learning part. But one thing I learned is the lost anchovy can’t keep shiner alive. :smt044
Congrats to Fish67 for the 1st keeper yak halibut.

Official Report
First off, I really appreciate those that came to my first Fish and Learn. As I said during the seminar that I do this for the love of the sport and the community. In my opinion there isn’t many organization that has the camaraderie that NCKA has. I think that is something that needs to continue to live on and be passed on — I think it is the greatest legacy that mooch left us before he passed.
I first want to thank the FISH GODS for listening to prayers. I know the forecast at O.P called for a windy day, but we lucked out and it turned out to be VERY NICE DAY on the water. Safety is always my number one concern.
For for those that attended, I know that there was a lot to cover in such a short amount of time; but I did my best to give attendees a large over view of this fishery. Halibut are a text book fish. Once you understand their behavior it gets a lot easier. I also want to thank the other season anglers that provided their input and added to the conversation — Except Ariel who said something about baby halibut liking to hump big halibut. WTF? Hahaha — I have no idea but his heart was in the right place; And Darius who started offering free Halibut guiding trips to BH (Even though I purposely excluded that location from my Fish and Learn) :smt009 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 JK :smt002
Since the event I have fielded multiple request for me to host other “Fish and Learn” events. Let me consider this. If anything, these will be much smaller gathering of “max 5 people” that I will post on
thelostanchovy.com (http://thelostanchovy.com). As I like to get in depth and provide more 1:1 time to field questions and fish.
So here are some photos from the Fish and Learn.
Final Note: Yes, JamesM, I can’t keep a shiner a live; but I appreciate you keeping them alive for me, and giving me my Money Shiner for the MBF. I am a firm believer in the JamesM shiner shop! :smt002. Oh.. and Happy Birthday Brotha :kick :kick :kick :smt113 :occasion16: :occasion15: :occasion13:
